Ubud is located 35 km northeast of Bali's International Airport. It is attractive to tourists for a variety of reasons. On a relatively small island with a horde of attractions, Ubud is centrally located, There are plenty reasons why Ubud was voted in recently as the most fascinating city of Asia by Condé Nast Traveler.
The Ubud area is around two to three hundred meters above sea level and surrounded by rice fields, which makes it noticeably cooler than other tourist destinations in Bali. Neighbouring villages are well known for unique bamboo crafts and furniture, wood and stone carving and many other crafts.
Ubud is famous for it's regularly nightly traditional dance performances, which are part of the traditional culture and are arranged for tourists on a regular schedule. Hindu-Balinese ceremonies take place on a nearly daily basis, especially in the European summer, which is the driest and coolest season here.
Ubud is popular in part today because it is the best place in Bali to break out of the tourist mode and get off the beaten path, although far from undiscovered. Hotels are plentiful; home stays and Indonesian guesthouses (losmen) are easily available to the foreign tourist. Many tourists simply base their entire stay here and travel to other destinations from Ubud.
Accommodations in Ubud are also somewhat more reasonably priced than in the beach towns of Bali. But atmosphere is perhaps the major attractions. One visitor summed it up this way: Kuta is madness, Sanur is sterile, and Nusa Dua is culturally isolated; Ubud is the place to go.
The villa is only a 20 minute walk from central Ubud or 5 minutes by car. There are lots of drivers available close to the villa.
Thanks Steve for the opportunity to stay in Villa Sofia. We really enjoyed our stay and the location was great, away from the hustle and bustle but still only a short taxi ride to town. I loved exploring the little lane ways, this is the true feeling of Bali..Your villa was very comfortable and spotlessly clean and staff very helpful and cooked a delicious breakfast each morning. The short 25 mtr walk to the Dream Cafe was a bonus, we also enjoyed our meals at Bayu's Kitchen. I would certainly recommend this villa to anyone who wants a real Bali experience.
We didn't meet Steve but he was excellent at responding to emails and answering questions. We organised a driver to pick us up from a friend's villa in Seminyak and he was more than prompt and efficient.
The villa was perfect for what we needed. It was clean and amazingly private and very secure. Dewi the house-girl was lovely and made sure we were comfortable. The extra mattress for our son was forgotten but fixed very quickly.
The villa was situated a very short walk down a path that cars couldn't get through. Conveniently located a small shop across the road and right next door a hotel with a spa/massage was located.
Dewi made us an amazing breakfast every day and cleaned the villa. Also was very helpful in organising a driver for us to do a half day tour around Ubud.
Everything was provided, including drinking water, extra food if you wanted to cook yourself. Tea, coffee, insect repellent and even DVDs to watch.
We would highly recommend staying at Villa Sofia to anyone.
This villa is gorgeous. As soon as we arrived we were wow'd by the spacious layout, queen on the main floor with ensuite washroom and an extra toilet in case there is a fight. The upstairs has it's own living area, kitchen space and spacious double bed room with its own bathroom. We realized a little later that the main kitchen was on the main floor in its own shed (which we thought was a tool room). Everything was clean and the beds were very comfortable. It made backpacking easy. The location is probably a 25 min walk to ubud central but the local shops are just as good. We had a good yoga session at Intuitive which is a walk down a small lane way. Alchemy is probably one of the top eateries out of all the Bali restos I've been too. Wish I had more time to eat there :) communication with Steve was great too prior to arriving and Dewi was helpful too and would come around in the mornings for a clean and breaky.
It was a food moment for us in Villa Sofia. We enjoyed staying here. The villa was great and Dewi's pancakes marvellous.
We have to adopt the balinese rythm to enjoy the rest of our trip end become patient...
Thanks for everything and thank you as well to "Bayu's Kitchen" for their fabulous meals!
Steve is a great host and very accessible and easy to deal with. Although my girlfriend decided on another villa, so we did not end up staying in this property, Steve did show us another alternative in his extensive portfolio and offered us a full refund without any hassle. I can highly recommend him if looking for a villa in the area !
A really beautiful villa in a great quiet location only 5 minute taxi from the centre of ubud. Would make the perfect spot for a couple or even two (as sleeping areas can be totally seperated) or those with older children. Not quite so ideal with our younger two children due to the pool 'in the living room', but still gorgeous and worth it. Also located right next to 'Alchemy', and amazing raw food and juice bar - you don't really need to go anywhere at all!
