Aurora was great. Settled us in and allowed us all the peace and quiet we needed.
Thank you! My short stay at the studio in Anahola was wonderful.
Aurora was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge. She recommended several great spots off the beaten path. The space is clean and quiet and has a small private deck with an outdoor shower that I absolutely love. It is a short walk to the beach and there is a convenience store and a restaurant nearby. I really like the location- close to Kapaa town but only a short drive to the north shore. The bed was comfortable with soft sheets and pillows and the kitchen has everything you need for cooking. There is a small fridge inside and a bigger one outside under the lanai which I found useful after stocking up on veggies and coconuts at the farmers market. The studio sits at the base of a mountain in a river valley and the views are pretty spectacular. I only wish I could have stayed longer.
Unfortunately the previous owners/caretakers were moving out the same day we arrived and leaving the island for Ecuador. Aurora was just moving in. Literally, as we were unloading the rental car Aurora and her friends were unloading their truck(s) to move Aurora's stuff in to the main house. We were not upset with Aurora but were surprised that this was not communicated to us in advance. That said, Aurora did not have a chance to check that the Studio was cleaned and prepped for our arrival and was otherwise distracted from taking care of our needs. The floor was mostly clean but certainly had not had a final sweeping. When we asked that the floor be cleaned Aurora had to look for a broom, then handed it to my wife! We also asked if the bed linen had been changed and she had no idea. We also did not have LPG for the outdoor shower water heater. Aurora bought us a bottle but did not take the time to hook it up. When we had trouble getting the pilot started we had to ask and she had her friends get it going. This was all on the first day.
The other days we were on Kauai we never saw Aurora. Given that we were interested in staying in a quiet home that was fine, but Aurora never checked in to see if everything was well. A couple of nights there was loud electronic music coming from the main house. Given the distance all we could hear was bass and it spoiled the peace. Fortunately, it did not continue past 9:30pm and we were able to rest.
All this said, the house is basic but nice. It has a cottage feel and the location is perfect. Equidistant from the North and South shores. Both are beautiful, as is Anahola. The kitchenette is small but adequate. The outdoor shower is nice but does not feel completely private, although there are not too many houses nearby. The bed is firm but slightly awkward since it is next to the wall on one side. May be good to pull it out or turn it so that there is access on both sides. The fridge is outside. Not something we really minded since we are used to HI living, but also not too convenient.
Overall, once we settled in an accepted that we were one step up from camping, this place is fun. It is quiet and fits well with the Kauai experience. The location is perfect. Only 5mins from Kapa'a town and 30 mins from the N. Shore. Walk to the beach for sunrise and you are in for a treat.
Jason I am sorry you were not told by any one that I would be moving in the day/ hour you arrived I did not book you for those dates and the previous tenants Tanya ensured the owner that the place would be ready for you I had to give you my gas tank that night as they left the whole house with out gas Sorry
I will be making improvement as well as offering a gourmet meal plan serves as well as options for massage and spa treatments I am sorry you experienced our move and not all the new serves we are offering
I hope that you will come back to our lovely garden island home
The place is a large studio with everything you need. The outdoor shower is great, it is very hot and I think just lovely to shower outdoors. But watch out for the spiders in their webs. They aren't poisonous, but if you are skittish of bugs, geckos, and/or chickens, maybe this place isn't for you…in fact, maybe the beautiful island of Kauai is not for you.
The only negative comes from my husband who says that the curtains on the sliding door that faces the main house do not allow for proper privacy (they leave a pretty big gap) so he wanted me to recommend that a continuous curtain be installed. It didn't bother me, because it's not as if someone is looking in at that area because 1. people have better things to do than try to catch a glimpse of people doing whatever and 2. There is a yard and a porch with a lot of vegetation between you and anyone else, so it is quite private.
Actually, 1 more little issue: We were told that our parking spot was on the bricks, which is right outside of the front door of the studio, this space being ours to help aid in privacy so that others aren't walking in front of your door all the time…Well, we only got to park here once because whoever the couple was that was staying in the main house kept taking the spot…We still had parking on the front, but were a bit aggravated not to have had the spot that was supposed to be ours.
Since we were only on the island for 3 full days and we packed a lot in, we were only at the house really to sleep and shower/change, so we never actually met Tonya. We did meet Thomas briefly upon arrival and he was very kind and helpful.
Very nice place,Tonya and Thomas were very welcoming and the studio was comfortable. I would definitely stay here again
Fantastic location and stellar hosts! We loved our time with Sunshine and Thomas! The location is great as you can go to either the north shore or the south shore depending on weather and the studio has everything you'd ever need!
Tonya and Thomas were very welcoming and the studio was comfortable . Good location for exploring the island.
We stayed at Thomas and Tonya's Bamboo Garden Studio for seven nights. Overall, it was an awesome experience, and we were really happy about the location—central, just off the main highway, so you can go anywhere on the island, and close Kapa'a and Wailua for lots of good eats ;)
Thomas and Tonya were wonderful hosts and exceptionally kind people. The hot water heater wasn't working in the outdoor shower, but they graciously offered their bathroom in their home (which is awesome, by the way)!
They mentioned in their greeting email that the studio was very much an outdoor experience, and you may be sharing the space with occasional critters and insects. We met a couple geckos and various insects, but we were most excited to meet Sassafras, one of their adorable and friendly kitties.
Thank you to Tonya and Thomas for a wonderful first experience in Kauai! We loved spending the week on such a beautiful island!
Loved staying here. Has a blast. I would recommend staying.
Overall, we had a really nice stay. The hosts are extremely warm and welcoming. However, there were a few things about the place that were slightly disappointing. Here is a breakdown of our experience:
Things we were happy about:
-choice of good location to go to different things on island
-completeness of kitchen
-fridge is really full size
-hosts being accommodating to some of our requests (we asked for different sheets)
-beach equipment included (towels, chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear)
-outdoor shower has ample hot water
-studio had shampoo, lotion, sunscreen and bug spray
Things we were not as happily surprised by:
-the listing says "Let the sounds of the ocean waves rock you to sleep each night," but the ocean is a drive away
-fridge is outside building
-there is little privacy and when you close curtains to get it, room is dark (assumed former garage, so studio and outdoor shower abut parking spots/a road that people use frequently and is in front of the hosts' house where people are going in and out -other airbnb guests are staying inside the house)
-second bike was not usable (and not fixed when requested)
-no soap provided, which was an unfortunate welcome after our late night flight arrival (toiletries provided listed above in 'happy surprises')
