  • I visited Dennis´ place and stayed at Garden Apartment #2 in April 2014. The apartment is quite small but has everything you need; a separate bedroom with two single beds, a lounge room with open kitchen and a bathroom. The kitchen is equipped with all basic utensils you may need, a fridge, and a full stove with oven. Dennis was very friendly and welcomed me heartily to his place. The apartment is connected directly to the Zoo Ave animal park, which is a great place to meet many endangered costa ricans. Read more about the park here: (website hidden)/‎

I would greatly recommend Dennis place to anyone wanting to spend some days (or longer) with the animals at Zoo Ave. If you get bored, there is an up class spa hotel (Boutique Hotel and Spa Resort Martino) right across the street where you can get many pampering treatments or enjoy the pool for a fee. Another option is to venture out to San Jose or other nearby attractions either by public bus or your own car. The Zoo Ave complex has a friendly restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. In all the Zoo Ave complex is very quiet and it feels as if you are in the middle of the jungle. The only thing causing loud noises are the wild male peacocks roaming on the grounds. Other than that you are fully surrounded by nature. I would probably come back here on my next trip to Costa Rica!

Hello, I am Dennis Janik, Founder and Executive Director of RESCATE ANIMAL ZOO AVE. I was born in Canada, lived in the USA for 11 years and the past 23 years in Costa Rica. Today I am fluent in Spanish and consider myself to be a Costa Rican. My life passion is the rehabilitation of injured animals and rebuilding the natural population of endangered species. The Profile Picture is of me doing my favorite work, watching a newly released Sloth climbing a tree to find his new home. As a small child, my love and passion of caring for animals started when I rescued a toad from the middle of a concrete driveway and then relocated the toad to a natural habitat beside a lake. Since that time I have dedicated myself to animals. Moving to Costa Rica has allowed me to build on that dedication and passion. When I moved to Costa Rica I assumed control of a small little zoo and relocated it to an old coffee plantation, a much larger property. That little start has now grown into RESCATE ANIMAL ZOO AVE, a non-profit foundation, which has the proud reputation of being one of the largest and most outstanding facilities in Latin America for rehabilitating injured animals and rebuilding endangered species. Examples of rebuilding the natural population of endangered species in areas where they had been locally extinct for over 60 years include raising and releasing: Over 350 Great Curassow Birds Two separate troops of 30 Spider Monkeys Over 300 Scarlet Macaw Birds Examples of rehabilitating and releasing injured birds and animals, or unwanted pets include: Over 200 Howler Monkeys Over 140 White Faced Monkeys Over 1500 Turtles Plus many thousands of various birds, animals, and reptiles. Last year RESCATE ANIMAL ZOO AVE, located in La Garita, Alajuela, Costa Rica, took in over 1400 injured and unwanted animals. This year, 2013, during the first nine months, over 2600 animals have passed through the facility. Animals are released at various locations throughout Costa Rica and also here at the facility. Over the years, many species have been re-established in the local area including the Orange-chinned Parakeet, the Crimson Fronted Parakeet, the Gray-headed Chacalaca, the Grey-necked Rail, the Laughing Falcon, the Spectacled Owl, the Green Iguana, the Agouti and the Two-toed Sloth. Some animals are not capable of being released back into the wild and they generally end up with a natural habitat home here at the facility. Including both the released birds and animals that are free in the local area plus the animals that are given a natural habitat, visitors have the benefit of being able to see a wide range of birds and animals that cannot be seen elsewhere. I welcome you to come and stay in my home, visit our facility and see our work. Our non-profit foundation needs your help and support in continuing our efforts to rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild and to rebuild endangered species.
