Perfectly located between Santiago and San Sebastian, this home is a stone's throw from activities in the city, and just a block down from the bus station, where you'd start your trips to the Yucatan attractions like the ruins and cenotes, and to other cities.
This home brings togther a perfect balance of the old with the new. Polished and stained concrete, tasteful pasta tile insets, granite counter tops, original wooden doors, exposed beamed ceilings in the original rooms, all meld together to form a house which lives like the 21st century but shows full respect for the history of the home and the city.
The home has a small footprint but lives big with its comfortably large two bedrooms, roomy two bathrooms and access to outdoor spaces from every room.
The open concept living/dining/kitchen area feels even larger because of the two outdoor patios on either side.
The kitchen comes fully equipped with top of the line appliances. It also includes all the dishes, cutlery and knick knacks you will need during your entire stay. There are also full laundry services.
This use of indoor/outdoor space is not only beautiful but very necessary for its welcome light and airflow.
The deep covered patio between the living area and the pool serves to greatly expand the livable area of the home and would be perfect for family groups or parties. The patio faces the dramatically raised, black concrete pool which becomes an artful backdrop for the rest of the home.
We loved the house. It was just the two of us, so we didn't even use the second bed/bath. Eduardo was amazing! Had snacks and champagne waiting for us upon arrival. After driving from Cancun to Merida, it was greatly appreciated!!! Having a private pool was a huge joy for us! We'll definitely stay here again when we're in Merida!
Home is in an interesting part of town. I am not sure if I would stay there again but it was safe. The home itself is spacious and nice. Pictures are somewhat accurate but the home is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. The kitchen area was awesome with a great view to the pool. We too had issues with mosquitos/spiders. My husband got about 15 bites in one night. We noticed that there were cobwebs throughout the house as well. I think the home requires a good cleaning which is difficult to do as it seems the house is being turned over very quickly. We left at 9am and another guest was checking in at 3pm. As far as check-in, Eduardo was absolutely great. He was accommodating and super sweet by bringing us wine and snacks. He also gave us a lift to the bus station as we had too much luggage. Overall nice spot but recommend that the house get a thorough cleaning.
We stayed there 2 nights.
House was perfect for us, very comfortable, amazing relaxing pool and kitchen perfect for our romantic dinners.
Nice house, although the pictures actually make it look better than it is.
Eduardo, the housekeeper, is a really nice and accesible person. He is very accomodating and will help in any sense he can. I asked Rethi if it was possible to have a baby cot, and they bought one after my request, which is a gesture I really appreciated.
I would say the house in general is confortable and quite big, although the space was not distributed in a very efficent manner. The main bedroom/ensuite bathroom are HUGE, the second bedroom has a very decent size. The living area / kitchen is practical and well connected to the outside pool area.
The HUGE dowside to this house is the street on which located. The area is safe, though not the prettiest in Merida. And it is blocks away from the main bus station. Which means buses running down the street continuously, day and night. And that makes the house really noisy. I could hear the buses from the main bedroom which has no contact with the street. The second bedroom was definitely too noisy, had no window to be opened, and no air conditionning. This wasn't so much of a problem in december, but I'm sure in summer it can be really hot and unconfortable.
The house in general lacks some very basic equipments in the kitchem for exemple, a strainer for pasta or rice, or tupperware-type recipients.
There was no clothesline to hang your towel and bathing suit after enjoying the nice swimming pool.
These are very simple details that would make the house feel like a home and not just a holiday rental.
Rethi and Eduardo are both very nice and accomodating.
The accommodations were beautiful and spacious. Eduardo, the property manager, was very friendly and efficient. One of the bedrooms is next to the busy street and quite loud, but all of the other rooms are very quiet and private. Overall a great experience.
Stay here at your own risk.
Booking was fast and easy, and Rethi was quick to add an extra day when we decided to extend our trip a few days before we arrived. When my husband and I arrived in the evening for a 3 night stay. We were greeted by Eduardo, the property manager, who was very welcoming and had provided us with a bottle of wine and some fruit. The house was quite impressive with its minimalist style, and the pool was an added bonus. The home seemed very clean as well.
Then I started to notice insect bites on my legs. Initially there were only a few the morning after we arrived and I thought that perhaps they came from walking around Merida, perhaps mosquito bites. I didn't think much of it at first. By the third night I noticed many more bites, and by the morning of our final day I recognized the distinct pattern of intensely itchy bites in a row typically left by bed bugs. My husband had them too. I am a physician and I have seen this pattern many times in my office with confirmed bed bug infestations. I have photographs to confirm as well. I did a quick survey of the sheets and saw small black smears and dark orange/red spots, which can indicate bed bugs, but we didn't have much time to investigate further as we had an early flight to catch.
Later that day when we arrived back home I messaged Rethi to let her know about the bed bugs. Her reply was quick, and rather flippant in her assurance that there were no bed bugs (how could she know without having pest control evaluate these elusive creatures?), and I never heard from her again regarding the matter. Meanwhile, my husband and I were left with the nightmare of decontaminating all of our belongings that we had brought with us and we are living in a state of constant vigilance and paranoia as we wait to see if we brought the bugs home with us, as it can take weeks for them to reproduce to a mass large enough to cause noticeable infestation.
Today I saw that another visitor commented on bed bugs, and again with a rather dismissive reply from Rethi who assured that there were no bed bugs. With two serious complaints it would be wise to handle this properly by having a pest control professional investigate the matter at the very least rather than to turn a blind eye.
I'm sorry to have heard this review from Cynthia. We were not turning a blind eye at all. After the first instance, we did get pest control in and they said there were no bed bugs. I also contacted the folks that stayed at the house immediately after the first person to complain and they they too said there were no problems at all and left great reviews. Regardless, we had the house sprayed as we do every month. But then Cynthia's review came in.
I'm not sure how I sounded flippant because I told Cynthia we would look into this immediately, and we did. I delisted the house and got in different pest control folks. They too said there were no bed bugs, but like any place with outdoor living, bugs can get into the house if you leave doors/windows etc open. Either way, to be safe, we have since fumigated the entire house, and changed everything from beds, to drapes to towels.
I'm sorry about your experience Cynthia, but we do take the cleanliness of this house very seriously, and I would never in a million years ignore a complaint like this.
Our stay was just amazing. The house is beautiful, spacious, and very clean. The kitchen is large and modern. Eduardo left us a great bottle of wine that we really enjoyed. You have your own private pool and terrace area that is just lovely.
The master bedroom is wonderful and very spacious. The bed is super comfortable. We slept really well there. A side note, the guest bedroom, which we did not sleep in, faces the street and tends to be a little noisy, but the main bedroom is very quiet. There is plenty to do in the area and the town center is within walking distance. It is maybe a 10 minute walk which we did a few nights and felt safe.
Also, Eduardo is just fantastic to deal with. Such a nice guy! He was very attentive and answered any questions we had and was very flexible on our arrival and departure times.
Absolutely would stay there again! Highly recommended for sure.
Thank you both Rethi and Eduardo!
I'm a journalist, who lives in Singapore, but fell in love with Merida. That explains why I have a home in Mexico, which I hope will bring travellers the same comfort it has given me.
