Beautiful romantic cottage surrounded by Hawaiian Tree Ferns. It has an expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. Just 5 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance. It's a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. Lots of large picture windows. Quiet, secluded, simple and serene.

The space

The cottage is built 6 feet above ground on the front side (with 14 stairs up to the front door) and at ground level on the back side. It is all wood and glass with open beam construction. It’s tucked into mostly native forest of Hawaiian Ohia and Hapuu (Hawaii Tree Fern) that is glorious in the mountain sun. This little cottage has ten large picture windows to give it a beautiful, expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting room with an expansive outdoor view and a small bathroom with a tub/shower. There is an open veranda part way around the cottage as well as a back deck to relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The entire cottage is about 850 sq. ft. Very comfortable and spacious for two people

There is a TV screen (no cable TV) and DVD player in the sitting room for you to enjoy movies in the evening after a day of exploring. There is a gas fireplace in the sitting room for great ambience and for those cold mountain evenings.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a 4-burner propane stove top, toaster oven, microwave oven, under-counter small size fridge and all basic kitchen utensils & supplies. We also provide the basic supplies in the pantry such as salt, pepper, organic olive oil, organic honey, sugar, organic coffee, tea bags and filtered drinking water.

There are lots of nature walking trails and hiking trails in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. When the lava lake at Halemaumau Crater is active, you can see molten lava bubbling in the lake. When it is not as active, you can see it's beautiful glow at night. When the volcano is active, you can hike to see lava flowing inland or into the ocean, sometimes even walk right up close to the lava. It's once in a life time experience for a lot of people.

If you are planning to visit other areas of the Big Island, we have another vacation rental at the North East side of the Big Island. It is a perfect spot to explore hidden gems on the Hamakua Coast of this island. Check out our Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1966611

We will be happy to answer any questions before and after your arrival. Feel free to contact us by phone or by email.

This is our own retreat cottage. We love it. We hope you'll enjoy it and care for it as we do. It is a place for quiet contemplation and meditative retreat with a feeling of serenity both inside and outside. We want our guests to experience the magic of Hawaii.

Whether you decide to visit with us or not, we send you our Aloha,

Guest access

The cottage is on a half acre property. Feel free to walk around on different foot paths or along stepping stones, but be very careful as the ground can get slippery especially when its wet.
The cottage is 6 feet above ground. Under the house is our storage area. We ask that guests do not go under the house. Otherwise, guests have full access to the cottage and the yard as well as the covered carport.

Interaction with guests

We love to greet our guests personally when they arrive. But we live over 90 minutes from the cottage. It is not always possible to meet all of our guests. The cottage has a smart lock and a detailed Cottage Information Binder. If we can't be at the cottage when guests arrive, guests can do self check-in. We are always available by phone, text messages or email if our guests have any questions. We are happy to give recommendations on local activities, hiking trails and restaurants.

Other things to note

~ We require a minimum of two night stay. Sometimes we can accommodate one night booking with $20 surcharge.
~ Guests will need to walk up a 14 step stair case to the front door of the cottage. Please be aware if you may have trouble carrying luggage up the stairs.
~ There is a bathtub in the bathroom, but because the water pressure is rather low, it will take a very long time to fill up the bathtub. So it's not very convenient to take a bath. Also because of limited water supply (we collect rain water for all our water supply), we request guests not to take bath but take showers instead.
~ Please conserve water since we have limited water supply.
~ There is no grocery store in the Volcano Village. Closest supermarket is 20 minutes away. We recommend guests to pickup groceries or supplies in Hilo before driving up to Volcano.

A truly beautiful vacation house in rain forest. The house is well kept, clean and comfortable. About ten minutes drive to Volcano National Park. We drove to the park at night to watch Lava. We stayed for three days and really enjoyed.

Exactly as pictured! Candice communicated very well with lots of information to help. She answered all of my questions promptly. Very scenic and lovely place to watch the rain. And the proximity to the National Park entry was exactly as promised. Very helpful the place had headlamps!

Candice was an absolutely wonderful host! The cottage was stunning with so many windows to look outside at the lush greenery. We loved that it was secluded and private, but close enough to get to the places we wanted to visit! Candice was extra thoughtful in providing head lamps and other small essentials we didn't even think to bring with us on our trip. We had the best time! Thank you so much!!

Candice and Richard's house is a beautiful retreat in a special place. We loved staying in their home it offers up close views of some of the most beautiful lush fern jungle. It feels truly peaceful and serene. We loved staying there and felt so fortunate we got the chance to be there. Thank you Candice and Richard!

Candice & Richard's house is a secluded, jungle escape- perfect if you want to spend most of your time in the national park. We ended up driving to Hilo most days and would have probably stayed closer if we knew how far it was from restaurants etc. The house is very clean, has pretty much everything you need in the kitchen and otherwise.

We absolutely loved staying in the cottage. It was everything we hoped for when looking into a secluded beautiful home to stay at in HI. Checking in and out were simple and easy. Candice made sure we were updated with everything we need and Margaret was a delight. This place is definitely one of the top reasons why we enjoyed our stay at the big island.

Candice & Richard User ProfileCandice & Richard is a superhost.

Candice and Richard are the hosts of two vacation rentals, Volcano Mountain Haven in Volcano and Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage in Ahualoa near Honokaa,

Candice born in Hong Kong and a Canadian citizen has been a CPA and a business manager. Richard born in New Jersey has been a lawyer, mediator and creator of an award winning gourmet honey. Candice loves hiking and dancing and is passionate about health and diet. Richard loves writing, hiking and wood working and is passionate about helping to make this world a better place.

In our recent past we were the creators and owners of a small artisan apiary in Hawaii and produced award winning gourmet organic honey, Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey.

For many years, we brought sweetness into the lives of people through this delicious and healthful gourmet honey that we produced. We have recently passed the honey business to new owners. Now our goal is to bring sweetness, serenity and beauty to people who visit the Big Island of Hawaii through sharing our two beautiful cottages, in Volcano and Ahualoa. We want to offer an elevating, serene, bucolic experience to people who visit the Big Island of Hawaii by sharing our two beautiful cottages, in Volcano and Ahualoa.

We love Volcano. Volcano was our retreat place whenever we needed a break from the hectic life of running our honey business. We love the mountain air and the tranquility in Volcano. Hiking up Mauna Loa is one of our favorite hikes in Hawaii.

After we sold the business, we put our energy in finding a cottage in Volcano so that we could have our own retreat place. Now we are sharing our retreat cottage with our special visitors

We love our cottage very much. The original owner did a fabulous job in creating this beautiful cottage and keeping it in pristine condition. We did some minor improvements to make it even more comfortable and beautiful. We feel very fortunate to have been able to find such a gem. We treasure it and enjoy it. We hope you do too.

Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is located on our formerly active, 5 acre honey bee farm and is also where we live. After the business was sold, we converted the education / tour building to a guest suite. Ahualoa is an artisan farming community. It is off the beaten path but has lots of hidden gems to be explored.

We live a holistic life style as much as possible. We meditate together and dance together. We grow our own vegetables, eat mostly natural and organic food, use natural non-toxic cleaning products, recycle what we can while practicing kindness towards ourselves and every living thing on earth. We love nature and try to be with nature as much as we can.

We would love to meet you, have you experience the beauty of our cottages and perhaps, by way of introduction, take a moment to share our common passions or philosophies, in brief meaningful conversation.

Much Aloha,
Candice & Richard
