This beautiful mountain cottage at 3300 feet altitude is just 5 miles away from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. Lots of large picture windows. Quiet, secluded, simple and serene. Wake up to the songs of Hawaiian native birds. Retire at night watching the night sky from one of the five picture windows in the bedroom.

The Space

The cottage is built 6 feet above ground on the front side (with 14 stairs up to the front door) and at ground level on the back side. It is all wood and glass with open beam construction. It’s tucked into mostly native forest of Hawaiian Ohia and Hapuu (Hawaii Tree Fern) that is glorious in the mountain sun. This little cottage has ten large picture windows to give it a beautiful, expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting room with an expansive outdoor view and a small bathroom with a tub/shower. There is an open veranda part way around the cottage as well as a back deck to relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The entire cottage is about 850 sq. ft. Very comfortable and spacious for two people

Guest Access

There is a TV and blue ray/DVD player in the sitting room for you to enjoy movies in the evening after a day of exploring. There is also wireless & cable internet in the sitting room, and a gas fire stove in the sitting room for those cold mountain evenings. The kitchen is fully equipped with a propane stove top, toaster oven, microwave oven, small size fridge and all basic kitchen utensils & supplies.

The Neighborhood

There are lots of nature walking trails and hiking trails in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with one to the summit of Mauna Loa Volcano at almost 14000 feet - a rigorous 3 day backpacking trip. When the volcano is active, you can hike to see lava flowing inland or into the ocean. When visiting you should be prepared for hot and cold and dry and wet.

  • We had a very nice time at Richard and Candice's house in Volcano. It was very well set up, and the setting in the tree fern and ohia forest was beautiful (and secluded). The cottage was just a few minutes from the Hawaii Volcano National Park, where we enjoyed several great hikes.

  • We totally loved staying in this beautiful cottage. It’s a rain forest paradise! And so close to the national park. Candice and Richard were warm, welcoming and informative. They are lovely, interesting people. They’ve thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The cottage is tidy, spotless and well-appointed and the views from the large windows are sublime. It feels isolated and private even though it’s in a neighborhood. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful and perfect. We can’t say enough good things about it and we look forward to staying there again. Many thanks to Candice and Richard for sharing this Volcano gem!

  • Thank you! My parents couldn't stop talking about your amazing home and the hospitality that was given :) They are very thankful that you walked them through the house, answered all their questions, and you made sure they were okay. Thanks for everything, my parents had a memorable time in volcano and staying in your cozy home. Just got back to the mainland and I can't wait to see all my dad's pictures ! Thanks again, I am lucky to have found your place :)

  • Our stay in the Volcano cottage was wonderful! The house was the perfect size and in a great location for exploring the Volcanoes
National Park, as well as some beaches and mountains. The rainforest setting of the house was magnificent and all of the windows made it feel like we were in a tree house. The owners are very nice and friendly. The cottage was in pristine condition, thoughtfully created and very comfortable. We only wished we had a few more days of vacation! The sitting areas outside and inside are very relaxing, and the kitchen was a perfect size for making some breakfast, lunches, and light dinners. The Volcano cottage was more beautiful than we expected!

  • This cottage in the rainforest is heaven on earth. Richard and Candice are the most perfect generous hosts you could ever find. We had an absolutely superb stay here, the garden is gorgeous and the cottage very comfortable and spotlessly clean. It is like your own private rainforest resort. Close to the active volcano and only half an hour to Hilo. There are a couple of general stores and restaurants within 5 minutes drive. Thank you very much for all of the extra touches; coffee, tea, honey, chocolates, torches, the list goes on and on, but most of all for your kindness with chatting to us about activities on the island and where to go for dinner. It was great meeting you both and if you ever visit Melbourne Australia please look us up.

  • Thank you Candice and Richard for having us.
Everything was flawless, clean, working, and best of all cozy. Having a whole tropical garden as your night lamp - awesome!

We arrived late as we got lost with our 4x4 on the way from green sand beach to Volcano and could not make it in time to meet Candice and Richard. Sorry.

And for the rest - drive back to south point and do not try to make a short cut and continue after green sand beach to the east ((website hidden) maps is lying about what should be streets there). In the end doable but we had been the only car that made it :D The only others we saw during that 2 hours were two locals on ATVs.

Also if you like to get organic food - get it before you drive up to Volcano. The two super markets in Volcano are places were you can buy a can of beans and toast, but not much fresh/organic stuff if any.

We totally can recommend the place and just can give you the tip. Spend more time in the national park. You have a prime spot to start early and be alone in the lava tube or the kahaualea iki crater.

    Thanks again for having us.
    We loved it!

  • What a special little house. Nestled in what feels like the middle of the rainforest (but is actually a neighborhood near the village of Volcano) this sweet little cottage is so beautiful and cozy. Absolutely loved staying here. Candice was so warm and welcoming, and the house was the perfect size for two. The place is just a few miles from Volcano National Park, and is perfect for a night drive to the glowing caldera in the park. Watching the sunrise from bed through the vegetation visible out the many windows in the bedroom was truly spectacular. My only regret is that we were not able to stay longer.

  • The cottage was absolutely amazing, a true little paradise. Candice and Richard have thought of everything and the cottage has everything you need or want. It is gorgeous and is a place that truly is a private rainforest oasis that captures the beauty of the Hilo side of Hawaii. I can't say enough about how amazing the cottage is along with Candice and Richard. They are so warm and friendly and the perfect hosts. I wish we could have spent more time talking to them as they are warm and friendly and have a great vibe and energy. We could have chatted with them for hours !!!!! If you want to add a truly memorable experience to your Hawaiian vacation please stay at the cottage and shareCandice and Richard's slice of heaven !!! We will definitly be back ;)

  • This is truly THE place you want to stay at while visiting the Volcano area!!!! We stayed for only 3 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. The cottage is a real retreat and is the perfect place to experience the hawaiian forest and nature. It is a magical place with many plants and birds. The interior of the cottage is just as great. The place is neat, comfortable and tastefully decorated. There are heaters in every room to make it comfortable at night. The bed is very comfortable and you get to see bright shining stars at night from the huge bedroom windows!!!!

We met Candice and Richard on our arrival and they were very generous with us. They took the time to walk us through every detail of the cottage. They were also very patient giving us lots of information on hiking possibilities and on the park. They are very nice people and they are very dedicated in arranging everything so we feel comfortable in their cottage. While talking with both of them we got to learn a little bit about their values in life. They are nature-conscious people and they are also respectful of other people. We really had the feeling that renting their cottage to us was more about sharing their secret place than about business.

The location of the cottage is just as perfect as the rest! You are only at a 5 minute drive from the Volcano National Park. The neighbourhood is very calm. It's also nice to go for a walk on the street as there is very little traffic and everything is so green! We also felt very safe in the surroundings.

We sincerely thank Richard and Candice for sharing their special place with us.

Candice and Richard are the hosts of two vacation rentals, Volcano Mountain Haven in Volcano and Pondside Suite in Ahualoa near Honokaa, Candice born in Hong Kong and a Canadian citizen has been a CPA and a business manager. Richard born in New Jersey has been a lawyer, mediator and creator of an award winning gourmet honey. Candice loves hiking and dancing and is passionate about health and diet. Richard loves writing, hiking and wood working and is passionate about helping to make this world a better place. In our recent past we were the creators and owners of a small artisan apiary in Hawaii and produced award winning gourmet organic honey, Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey. For many years, we brought sweetness into the lives of people through this delicious and healthful gourmet honey that we produced. We have recently passed the honey business to new owners. Now our goal is to bring sweetness, serenity and beauty to people who visit the Big Island of Hawaii through sharing our two beautiful cottages, in Volcano and Ahualoa. We want to offer an elevating, serene, bucolic experience to people who visit the Big Island of Hawaii by sharing our two beautiful cottages, in Volcano and Ahualoa. We love Volcano. Volcano was our retreat place whenever we needed a break from the hectic life of running our honey business. We love the mountain air and the tranquility in Volcano. Hiking up Mauna Loa is one of our favorite hikes in Hawaii. After we sold the business, we put our energy in finding a cottage in Volcano so that we could have our own retreat place. Now we are sharing our retreat cottage with our special visitors We love our cottage very much. The original owner did a fabulous job in creating this beautiful cottage and keeping it in pristine condition. We did some minor improvements to make it even more comfortable and beautiful. We feel very fortunate to have been able to find such a gem. We treasure it and enjoy it. We hope you do too. Pondside Suite is located on our formerly active, 5 acre honey bee farm and is also where we live. After the business was sold, we converted the education / tour building to a guest suite. Ahualoa is an artisan farming community. It is off the beaten path but has lots of hidden gems to be explored. We live a holistic life style as much as possible. We meditate together and dance together. We grow our own vegetables, eat mostly natural and organic food, use natural non-toxic cleaning products, recycle what we can while practicing kindness towards ourselves and every living thing on earth. We love nature and try to be with nature as much as we can. We would love to meet you, have you experience the beauty of our cottages and perhaps, by way of introduction, take a moment to share our common passions or philosophies, in brief meaningful conversation. Much Aloha, Candice & Richard
