This house is truly an Art Deco masterpiece. The listed unit includes the main kitchen, two bedrooms, and full bath. It features a cedar clad sauna, claw-foot bathtub and aquarium in the master bedroom. It sleeps 5 comfortably in 3 separate beds.
The living room wall features a beautiful fiber-optic cityscape complete with fireworks.
The house was built by, Paul Wenner, the creator and founder of the Gardenburger between 1987 and 1993 and was inspired by a trip he made at the time to South Beach Florida. Every detail of the house is consistent with the Art Deco style from the furnishings and artwork to the cabinets and plumbing fixtures.
The listing being offered consists of the main kitchen, sitting room, two bedrooms and bath in the East Wing of the house. It is a fully self-contained apartment with it's own access through the shared lobby/living room.
The living room is shared with other guests as well as the host and may be considered a "common area" available for use by our guests as are the patio, backyard and pool areas. On alternate Wednesday evenings between 6:30 and 9:30 the living room and stage are used as a rehearsal space for the Ukeladies, a professional ukulele group, who are very respectful and fun to host twice a month.
The laundry room in the basement is accessible directly from the listed unit and is available for use by our guests. It is shared only with your host. There is an iron and ironing board in the laundry room.
The cost of heating the pool prevents us from keeping it warm year round.
Interaction with Guests
You can expect very limited interaction with the host unless you choose to watch a movie in the living room or use the yard and pool areas. We are very respectful of the guests' total privacy and you can expect to come and go at any hour without disturbing anyone. The living room will generally be off-limits to social gatherings after 10 PM except by prior arrangement.
We are just 2 blocks from the heart of the Hawthorne shopping district. The neighborhood features McMenamin's historic Bagdad Theater, Bread and Ink Cafe, Samui Thai Restaurant, The Cup and Saucer, Peet's Coffee and the ever-present Starbucks are just a few of the nearby restaurants. Powell's Books has an outlet and there are numerous great 2nd hand and resale clothing stores on the street.
One off-street parking space can be made available as needed. Most of the time it is easier just to park on the street.
Portland Metro Transit, Tri-Met, is very efficient and convenient to this location with buses running every 15-20 minutes to the downtown light-rail hubs and all over the city.
There are bike routes, running paths and beautiful parks located within walking distance.
Other Things to Note
We are asking for an additional fee of $50 per person per night for over three guests. We can make a second double bed available upon request.
There is a dog here now and she is very sweet, friendly and fun. She does not shed and her coat is hypo allergenic (Cocker/Poodle mix).
No smoking is allowed anywhere in the house and there is a covered patio in the pool area. If you'd like to plan a social event or have any additional guests visit we'd like to know ahead of time just so that we know what to expect.
The patio and pool areas are off limits after 10 PM except by prior arrangement and subject to strict noise guidelines.
If you would like to plan a large family gathering, party, or reception please contact me with the specifics. The house can easily accommodate groups of up to 20-25 and events of that size require some pre-planning. Depending on the nature of the event additional fees may apply. Because we are located in a residential neighborhood we must always respect our neighbors rights to enjoy the peaceful and quiet nature of the neighborhood.
Another great stay at the Deco Dream! Love this place! David is a warm and welcoming and the place is stunning. The pictures just don't do it justice. David went out of his way to accommodate us and our daughter. Plus- the location is amazing. So much goodness in walking distance!
Deco Dream is a destination itself! I have stayed on different Airbnb in different states and David’s place is one of the best. There are 3 ladies in our group and we each had our own space, which is important to us. There are 3 separate spaces in his pad. The first one is the basement bedroom that features a bathtub, dry sauna, fireplace and walk-in closet. There’s a small bedroom near the stairs with a twin bed that has built-in closets. Another bedroom can be found in the living/dining area that has a very comfortable bed and some storage space. The shower is in the basement; washroom is separate from the toilet.
Every inch of the place is unique and well decorated. He has a jacuzzi, bikes and an awesome living room. All the things in the pad are enjoyable and functional. He has dishware, cooking utensils, and condiments, spices, oils, etc., basically anything you need to cook.
David is very easy to talk to, relaxed, incredibly accommodating to requests and responds almost immediately to questions. He has a guidebook for his place and in and around Portland that guest should definitely take a gander. He made sure that we were well, secure, relaxed, and that we had privacy. Like on the description of his place, he lives on the 2nd and 3rd floor and that the entrance/living room is a common are. He has a very sweet, well-behaved dog named Sophie that welcomes you as soon as you enter the place.
The location of Deco Dream is quite phenomenal. His place is in between Belmont and Hawthorne. Hawthorne has a lot of cute stores, restaurants like the Blue Star Donut that would be a crime to miss. Baghdad Theater is right in front of Powell’s bookstore and small vintage shops line the Hawthorne area. Belmont and Division St are lovely places too! There's a lovely park near his place called Laurelhurst Park that's walking/biking distance from his place. Parking is free and everywhere if you happen to drive to Portland or decided to rent a car, like we did. We felt safe when we walk home at 11pm.
I highly recommend David’s place. His place is a wonderful gem in the city that makes Airbnb enjoyable.
This was an amazing stay. David made us feel so welcome at his incredible home; part of the fun was exploring the unique place. It's very convenient to the "downtown" of Portland, yet its own little neighborhood has GREAT pubs, restaurants, and shops. The bed was very comfortable, towels were in abundance, and the refrigerator and kitchen were stocked with everything we could need! There's also a grocery store just a VERY short walk (4 min) down the road, with excellent groceries and even sushi! A perfect choice for visiting Portland.
David is such a good host. We had a wonderful stay at David's home. The house is so interesting and unique and we loved the sauna. The location is very convenient and the neighborhood is quiet too. Will definitely come back.
David was a fantastic host! We arrived late, but he was ready to greet us and even offered a glass of wine. I ended up losing my wallet shopping on Saturday and he was so helpful in trying to help find it and even followed up after we left. He is all about hospitality so he was fine with us having friends over since without an ID I couldn't go out.
The space is truly unique and why I started using AirBnB in the first place. When else are you going to stay in a home like this? It's close to both Belmont and Hawthorne, a great way to experience Portland. I'm a native of the westside, but this was a fantastic way to explore part of the city I'm not so familiar with. David even has a bike guests can borrow (bonus!).
This house is truly a dream. I stayed with David to celebrate my birthday and he provided me with a very special and completely relaxing time. I've never felt so out-of-town in my own neighborhood.
The shared space in this house is comfortable and inviting, and my own private apartment provided me with the solitude and quiet I was looking for. The sauna was a game changer.
David was a great host with a truly special home. I look forward to coming back again!
Delightful! David is a fantastic host and his home is so much fun. We enjoyed 2 days and nights exploring Deco Dream (and Portland too!), watching movies on the big screen, and relaxing in the hot tub. Thank you David!
I have recently relocated to Portland from Maui and love living in the city and especially the Hawthorne neighborhood. I enjoy biking, walking, music and the rich art community and events available in Portland. I work as a renewable energy and energy efficiency consultant to business and industry in the Pacific Northwest.
