About this listing
Travel back in time to either the 20's heyday of Art Deco or the 80's Art Deco Revival.
The living room wall features a beautiful fiber-optic cityscape complete with fireworks.
The house was built by, Paul Wenner, the creator and founder of the Gardenburger between 1987 and 1993 and was inspired by a trip he made at the time to South Beach Florida. Every detail of the house is consistent with the Art Deco style from the furnishings and artwork to the cabinets and plumbing fixtures.
The listing being offered consists of the main kitchen, sitting room, one bedroom, a sleeping nook, and full bath in the East Wing of the house. It is a fully self-contained apartment with access through the shared lobby/living room.
The living room is shared with other guests as well as your host and may be considered a "common area" available for use by our guests. On alternate Wednesday evenings between 6:30 and 9:30 the living room and stage are used as a rehearsal space for the Ukeladies, a professional ukulele group, who are very respectful and fun to host twice a month.
The laundry room in the basement is accessible directly from the listed unit and is available for use by our guests. It is shared only with your host. There is an iron and ironing board in the laundry room.
You can expect very limited interaction with the host unless you choose to watch a movie in the living room. We are very respectful of the guests' total privacy and you can expect to come and go at any hour without disturbing anyone. The living room will generally be off-limits to social gatherings after 10 PM except by prior arrangement.
We are just 2 blocks from the heart of the Hawthorne shopping district. The neighborhood features McMenamin's historic Bagdad Theater, Bread and Ink Cafe, Samui Thai Restaurant, The Cup and Saucer, Peet's Coffee and the ever-present Starbucks are just a few of the nearby restaurants. Powell's Books has an outlet and there are numerous great 2nd hand and resale clothing stores on the street.
One off-street parking space can be made available as needed. Most of the time it is easier just to park on the street.
Portland Metro Transit, Tri-Met, is very efficient and convenient to this location with buses running every 15-20 minutes to the downtown light-rail hubs and all over the city.
There are bike routes, running paths and beautiful parks located within walking distance.
We are asking for an additional fee of $50 per person per night for more than 2 guests. We can make a second double bed available upon request.
There is a dog here now and she is very sweet, friendly and fun. She does not shed and her coat is hypo allergenic (Cocker/Poodle mix).
The apartment is accessed through a shared living room/lobby space and has it's own private entry door. The guest is provided with two keys: one to the front door and one to the apartment. The kitchen is used by the guest ONLY and is not shared with anyone else during your stay. The apartment is very well insulated for sound and guests can be assured of their complete privacy.
Guests may entertain family or friends in the listed unit, on the roof deck or in the main living room/lobby with prior approval of the host. Approval is a formality only and just helps your host to know what to expect. I love to see my guests have a good time and to fully enjoy their stay.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can expect very limited interaction with your host. I live on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the house and am available if you need anything but rarely see most of my guests. If you choose to use the living room stage or cinema screen I can show you how to use the sound system and projector.
Deco Dream is conveniently located just two blocks from Hawthorne Boulevard and three blocks from Belmont Street. There are dozens of bars, restaurants and boutique shops easy walking distance within 3-4 blocks.
The neighborhood is served by the most frequent bus line in the city. The Portland transit system is easy to use and very convenient. With the frequent bus service guests can easily get anywhere in the city and connect with the central city street cars and Max trains.
Unfortunately, due to repeated noise complaints and a general disregard for the house rules regarding courteous and respectful noise levels in the patio and pool areas Airbnb guests will no longer be allowed to use the pool and patio. Guests now have their own private roof deck to use for barbeques, small social gatherings and to enjoy great views of the neighborhood.
No smoking is allowed anywhere in the house and there is a designated covered area on the front porch. If you'd like to have any additional guests visit while you're here I'd like to know ahead of time so that I know what to expect.
The patio and pool are off-limits to Airbnb guests. We are located in a quiet residential neighborhood and must always respect our neighbors right to enjoy the peaceful and quiet nature of the neighborhood.
There is a 10 PM curfew for social gatherings in the living room except by prior arrangement.
An amazing, fantastic place to stay! So luxurious and so beautiful. David and his helper Marcet went above and beyond to make us welcome and work with our last minute schedule fluctuations. I plan to stay here again on all future trips to Portland. Convenient to shops and fantastic restaurants, peaceful and quiet, spotlessly clean and gorgeous! A Deco Dream indeed!
We had a great stay at deco dream. It was exactly as advertised and in an amazing location. David was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend staying here.
great stay, amazing house and amazing host (and hostess: Sophie). has everything you could possibly need and lots of space for people traveling together. all of the quirks were beyond charming, we will definitely be back.
What a fabulous stay! The location is perfect. Walk to any kind of food and other adventures. The home is perfectly quirky and David is the best Airbnb host ever. And this is not my first rodeo. There is only one way to see Portland - Deco Dream. I would never go anywhere else.
David's art Deco dream was intense and perfect for our Portland experience. There were so many details to explore in every room including a fiber optic light show imbedded in the wall of the main living room! David was courteous and worked hard to make sure we were comfortable
David was a fantastic host. The Deco Dream is certainly unique, packed with history and incredible decor. If you want a fun stay in a great neighborhood that's accessible, roomy and relaxing, stay here.
This was such a cool place for our family to stay and explore the Hawthorne District in Portland. There was plenty of room for all 4 of us to be comfortable, and our teens got a big kick out of how quirky and different the style and architecture of the house is. We even had a chance to sit outside and take a dip in the pool. It's a great location within quick walking distance to a couple of fun neighborhoods. David is a very interesting and accommodating host--he made it easy for us to stay there and even provided coffee, toast and well stocked kitchen. We will recommend this place to other families.
