Pura Vida is a 3 bedroom home with 100% AC on a quiet and safe street in Esperanza, Vieques. We are one block to the Malecon (ocean front Caribbean), a quick 5 minute walk. We are baby and kid friendly and also offer a Dodge Durango 8 seat SUV.
Pura Vida is an inviting home located in Esperanza, the quaint fishing town of Vieques as well as the most popular tourist area. The three bedroom, one bath house is located in a great neighborhood, only 1 block, or less than a 5 minute walk, to the Malecon.
There is a lack of rental cars on Vieques, and if not reserved ahead of time, they may all be sold out. Avoid being left without a car to explore Vieques. Our SUV has three rows of seats holding 8 passengers. If you are a larger group staying at Pura Vida, an 8 passenger SUV negates the need to rent two vehicles, you can everyone fit in one SUV, thus saving you money on both rental fees, gas etc.We do charge extra for the SUV, please inquire and I will promptly respond with the rate.
We are baby and child friendly! We had our first child in November of 2007, our second in January 2010. We enjoy bringing them to the island and they love Media Lunas gentle waves and shallow beach. At Pura Vida we have a Pack N Play crib, child booster seat for feeding (works well instead of high chair), Britax car seats, booster style car seats, and stroller. We also have a bunch of beach toys, child snorkel gear, books, games and puzzles to keep kids entertained. That is if they aren't worn out after a long day at the beach. We are happy to provide these child amenities to our guests free of charge, pending no abnormal damage to them. We also have a TV, Blu Ray DVD player, vast library of adult and children DVDs, Playstation 2 and Wii with games for you to enjoy.
Although we offer a SUV, our convenient location allows one to easily enjoy much of what Vieques has to offer without driving. Stroll to dinner and dine overlooking the Caribbean, grab a drink at one of the oceanfront bars, spend the day at the park, or experience the beauty (and nightlife) of Esperanza Beach and the Malecon, all within walking distance.
Pura Vida is a single family home, there is no shared portions of the home, it is for the exclusive use of our guests.
Interaction with Guests
We will not be present during the guest's stay, the home is a single family home and exclusively yours. There is no sharing or separate apartments.
Our care takers live a few blocks away in the same area. They have lived on Vieques since 2005 and are very knowledgeable about the island, restaurants, tours, beaches, just about everything! You will probably see Steeler Joe, our caretaker, on the Malecon during your stay.
We love the fact we can walk to the Malecon (oceanfront bar, restaurant and gift shop area). If some people in your party are getting ready and others want to walk down, it's very easy to do. The neighborhood is also very safe.
Well, our SUV is perfect for getting around the island. Vieques does not have any public transportation other than Publicos which is a shared 15 passenger taxi van. Our SUV is an 8 seat Dodge Durango Limited. We do charge extra for the SUV, however our rates are significantly lower than an 8 seat vehicle with a car rental agency.
Other Things to Note
All bedrooms have Air Conditioning. We also have a central Air conditioning unit in the main living area giving Pura Vida 100% AC comfort.
Reservations require a Reservation Deposit of $500.00 to confirm your stay.
We require a Security Deposit of $500.00. This will immediately be returned, pending no abnormal damage after your stay.
The balance of your payment, including security deposit and 7% room tax is due 30 days before your arrival date
Cancellation more than 60 days before your arrival will result in a full refund of all monies received
Cancellation between 30-60 before your arrival will result in a refund less the $500.00 initial reservation deposit
Cancellation 30 days or less before your arrival will result in a refund less the $500.00 initial reservation deposit if Pura Vida is re-rented for the time period you reserved the house for, and no refund if the house remains vacant.
Check-In time is 3 PM. Check-Out time is 10AM. Either of these times may be modified with the approval of our care-takers.
We rarely withhold funds from security deposits due to cleaning and turnover. We incur more expense than the cleaning fee we charge, and often absorb that as a cost of doing business. However, any excessive cleaning beyond a reasonable level required will be charged at our care takers hourly rate and deducted from the security deposit. A sink full of dirty dishes, overflowing garbage cans, every towel used in the house and other general nonsense will be considered excessive cleaning.
If Renter plans on being on Vieques during hurricane season (about August 1 to November 1) Renter should know there is absolutely no way to predict what, if any, hurricane or storm activity may occur when Renter is planning on being in Pura Vida. If it looks as if a storm is threatening to hit Vieques and, if, in the sole discretion of Joe and Mimi Popp, our property managers, feel they need to board up the house, Renter will have to leave at once. Once boarded up, the house is uninhabitable. Owners strongly recommend that Renter leaves the island. Owners will refund a prorated amount of rental fee from the time Renter has to vacate to the end of Renter’s scheduled stay.
Couldn't have been happier at this place. We were met by Joe, the local representative for Pura Vida who was so very gracious. He spent a good amount of time to thoroughly share everything about the property and the local area. Left us paperwork with all the details of the beaches, gas stations, and safety info which was incredibly helpful. The house itself was extremely well equipped and I couldn't think of anything it was lacking. Unfortunately, we didn't cook much but everything was there you could possibly need. It was nice having a/c and fans in the bedrooms. Jeff was great about communicating to us ahead of time and helped by giving us tips to better plan our trip.
The location was a short, easy walk to the malecon or to a small grocery store.
While there were only 2 of us, this property could comfortably accommodate a larger family or small group and has a very kid friendly set up.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Vieques.
Just wish our stay here had been longer.
We had a good time in Vieques, in no small part because this house is so well setup - the local manager was very helpful. We ran out of propane and this was addressed right away - with no problem.
There is a nice beach within easy walking distance - and the really notable beaches were also a quick ride. We liked the fact that there were board games for us to play - and some of the kids enjoyed the Wii. We would be happy to return to Pura Vida.
Hello Carney Family
Thank you for the kind words and review. A highlight of all our personal trips is the plenty of front porch time where we all have cocktails and relax playing board games, sometimes until the wee hours of the morning.
So glad you had a good trip, hopefully we will see you again in the future.
Owner Jeff is extremely friendly and accomodating. This place is all about location/proximity to the Malecon and great beaches while being pretty comfortable.
Pros: Plenty of helpful travel information. Three bedrooms and a full kitchen are perfect for groups and families. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of linens/towels for multiple people. The A/C in each room is wonderful although the queen bedroom doesn't seem to be working. The extras such as beach chairs, coolers and snorkel gear were a lovely touch. Pura Vida is literally one block away from the beachfront boardwalk (Malecon) as well as a bunch of good restaurants and bars. It is also very few miles from our favorite beaches and even the Bio Bay experience. The optional car rental makes the package easy to coordinate.
Cons: The hot water pressure is iffy, so be prepared for the temp to go from too hot to cold. The caretaker (who is also very nice) is prone to dropping by unannounced. I would request text or call notice before he comes by. The house uses propane tanks, and one of ours went out at night. As the caretaker was out of town we had to do some youTube searching to figure out how to switch to the reserve tank to bathe/cook and it was a bit scary. The washer only uses cold water, and the dryer doesn't seem to dry things fully, both have only one usable setting. We rented the optional car which was nice and roomy, but were told on the day we arrived that the A/C did not work. Owner Jeff was great about refunding a portion of the rental, but it was extremely uncomfortable on longer drives.
All in all: If you want location above all else, with no frills comfort second this place is great. Very family friendly and several family group/extras. On a tight budget this will get you through a stay on Vieques.
Thank you for the thorough comment, I'm sure it will be helpful for others in the future.
Just to add a few responses for future guests:
Previous and subsequent guests have not mentioned any issues with the queen bedroom AC, and it worked fine just prior.
The hot water heater is on demand, so it heats water as needed. The temp does vary some and it may take a little adjusting.
The washer and dryer are used every single week during house turnover for multiple loads in a short time frame. The Caribbean has very high humidity so it does take longer to dry clothing if you're used to dry climates.
Our care takers gauge how much attention guests need, some you never hear from and they go with the flow. Others need lots of attention, perhaps they misjudged.
All properties on Vieques use propane for hot water and cooking, there are no natural gas lines. We have multiple tanks, when one goes out it's a relatively easy process to switch the tanks over as you just flip a switch. Our care takers explained the process over the phone and it was resolved.
Right before you arrived the AC in our SUV was not working correctly. We again apologize for that and we offered a full refund of the SUV to rent a vehicle at a rental agency or a discount if they decided to keep it. The AC in the car is scheduled to be repaired.
We do feel we offer a great value for our accommodations. No matter where one stays one can always find something to be improved. We always take guest feedback and fix issues or improve on them. Without comments and feedback how would we know what to improve on, so we do appreciate the review.
As far as our home being 'Comfort Second' I hope you would reconsider that statement. Our care takers and I really strive to make every guest's vacation enjoyable and comfortable. We average over 265 rented days each year and have multiple repeat guests every season. As far as being no frills, we have 100% Air Conditioning in the home which few houses offer, many games, books, movies, beach gear, stocked kitchen and most importantly a safe environment.
We do hope you enjoyed your stay, hope all is well.
Wow! Pura Vida is a dream come true! Jeff was very helpful with a last minute booking and the whole experience was great! Clean, cool, with everything you need to have a great family vacation. Thanks to Jeff, family, and joe and Mimi!
We purchased Pura Vida in the summer of 2006. Myself (Jeff), my wife (Michelle) and our two kids (Andrew born 2007, Caroline born 2010) are the proud owners of the property. We have put countless hours of sweat, capital and time improving and maintaining the home, which is not exactly easy on a remote Caribbean island!
We feel we provide an excellent location, value and convenience with our vehicle at Pura Vida, and many others feel the same. We have had many repeat guests who have become friends each year, hopefully you will become not only a guest but a friend as well. Each year we continually invest with capital improvements to make your stay more comfortable. We've installed an outdoor shower, completely remodeled the kitchen (summer 2010), and continually update and replace amenities for your satisfaction.
Our rentals have doubled each year, and we had over 200 days rented in 2009, even more in 2010. We would not have rental numbers such as those without amazing and knowledgeable care takers, and satisifed guests. No house can claim to be all things to all people, however we feel we offer a tremendous value and location.
