About this listing
The Rock Room at Science! House is a private room in an attractive two story townhome. Come share our big, well equipped kitchen, comfortable living room, and fenced-in, stone-paved patio.
Your bedroom is one of two private rooms on the second floor. The Rock Room was intended as the home's second bedroom. It's the same size as the master bedroom (airbnb: The Space Room @ Science! House) but doesn't have a private bathroom or access to the jacuzzi tub. The bedroom is furnished with a comfortable queen sized bed and a full size futon with a real (and comfortable!) mattress. It's decorated with images and samples of rocks and minerals from around the globe, lovingly labeled and curated. (Selby is a geology professor at Bryn Mawr). Currently on display are the story of the marble from which David was carved and the story of the minerals used to create the pigment for Starry Night.
Feel free to browse and enjoy our extensive board game collection. Play as much as you like (or join us in a game) but please do put the games away in the condition that you found them.
You'll probably get to meet Tommy Dog during your stay, our lovable pony-sized canine. (Ok, not really- he's 100lbs). He is old, friendly, and mostly sleeps all day in the basement. He happily accepts cuddles, though he might protest that he doesn't deserve them. We keep a clean house with the help of our Roomba, but those with pet allergies be warned: this is Tommy Dog's house too.
We love having guests in the house. The entire first floor is shared with us and we'd love to have a conversation over coffee in the morning or have you join us for a board game or a movie. At the same time, there is abundant private space. We retreat to our finished basement for alone time and the guests have the second floor practically to themselves (except for our showers in the shared hall bathroom).
The house is great, but it's the neighborhood that brought us to this little corner of Northern Liberties. Our street is quiet, but our neighborhood is exciting. There is something interesting at almost every street corner. We are half a block from Honey's, the most celebrated breakfast spot in Philadelphia. The Random Tea Room and Curiosity Shop is even closer. North 3rd and the Abbeye are both great beer bars and are each a block away. There are restaurants, shops, entertainment spots, parks, playgrounds, and a community center with a free swimming pool (summer months only) all within easy walking distance. The streets are safe and the new construction everywhere is a testament that Northern Liberties is still growing. Some of the homes are marvels.
A short walk to the MFL subway, and, from there, it's a 10 minute subway ride to the Convention Center, 15 minutes to Drexel University & the University of Pennsylvania, and easy to get to the Art Museum, Independence Hall, and Old City. Free parking is relatively easy to find and we have a couple shared spots on site (often, but not always available)
We are GLBT and alternative relationship friendly.
Please don't feed the dog (we've got him).
Please do NOT park in the lot next to the house. It looks like it should belong to us, but it doesn't and we have one neighbor in particular who gets a little crazy about protecting the space from interlopers. Call or text when you're arriving and we'll be happy to show you where to park.
Your host's private basement space is relatively sound isolated, but please do be considerate about late night noise if there are guests in the other room. Come and go as you like- we have no curfew. :)
This giant cushion has been retired and the space now holds a comfortable full sized futon. It will be set up as a couch unless your group is three or more or you make other arrangements with us.
