Gorgeous modern studio in a forested setting, this is a unique space with thoughtful design. The Studio is a ten minute drive from Bellingham, with seashore and mountain trails nearby. Our special place has offered a base for adventure, rejuvenation and re-connection and provided "Il Dolce Far Niente" - The Sweetness of Doing Nothing. Meeting accurate expectations is important to us, so please read our entire listing description before you send a booking request. Thank you!

The space
Note: Meeting accurate expectations is very important to us, so please read our entire listing description before you send a booking request. Thank you!

The Seaside Forest Studio shares the property with our home, and began as an artist's studio, every aspect custom designed. From the loft bed surrounded by windows, to the fully equipped kitchen, slate-tiled shower and red brick floors, everything was added with careful thought. This is a unique space!

The Studio is 512 square feet with an added 60 feet in the sleeping area above. There is a queen-sized bed in a hanging loft, best for those comfortable climbing a ladder up and down, to sleep surrounded by windows and trees on all sides. There is also a Euro-lounger/sofa in the main room that folds into a comfortable full size bed, with a memory foam topper. The main room has a window seat, as well as a custom reading nook with games for all ages stored below. Peter's handmade live-edge cedar table seats four. The kitchen is fully equipped with sink, stove, oven, refrigerator, and cooking implements. The bath has a full shower, beautifully tiled. The studio has both electric heat and a wood stove. There are two entryways, with a wood deck at the front entrance. Parking is just outside the back door.

We care about beauty, connection, real things, and the Studio reflects that; much of its features were made by us or locally sourced. You'll eat at Peter's table, hang your coat on a fir tree we found in our woods, use Aimee's homemade soap in the kitchen, see our art on the walls, and enjoy a fire with wood from our property.

A short walk down the driveway offers views of Chuckanut Bay. Just up a winding brick path, you'll find the hot tub behind our house, on a deck under tall fir trees with peekaboo views of the water. Our property is a haven for wildlife: the studio is surrounded by a forest that's home to many kinds of birds, including raptors, owls, and songbirds. Raccoons and deer wander through, and we're close to the seashore where seals swim, herons squawk, and crabs scuttle under eelgrass forests.

The Studio shares the forest with our home, so we're available for questions and concerns. Our house is situated on a knoll overlooking the water, while the studio is in the forest just below. The two structures are separated by a driveway and woods, out of sight of each other. We do share a common driveway, our cars blocked from the Studio's view by a neatly stacked woodpile. The Studio has many windows (with blinds), and we do drive and/or walk past the Studio when coming & going.

The Seaside Forest Studio is ideal for nature lovers, outdoor adventurers, and those who want unique accommodation in a beautiful natural setting.

Guest access
Guests have access to Studio amenities, hot tub, and all the trails Chuckanut Mountain has to offer. While there is no beach access on site, there are several beautiful beaches within walking or driving distance.

Other things to note
• NOISE - Our property is bordered by a forest to the west; woods, road and Chuckanut Bay to the north; Pleasant Bay to the south; and the Burlington Northern railway very nearby to the east, just beyond and below the Studio and driveway (about 50 feet from the Studio). Trains pass by frequently day and night and the freight engines' rumble can be noisy (though they thankfully seldom blow their whistles here). There is occasional work on the tracks below the studio, about 4-5 days/year at entirely unpredictable times. Some guests love the trains, others find the earplugs we provide helpful at night with the intermittent passing trains, or get accustomed to it as background noise (quite infrequently, a guest finds the passing night trains intolerably loud - it's really a subjective experience). We live in a neighborhood, so sounds of children playing and neighbors talking mingle with owls hooting, coyotes yipping in the distance, a nearby neighbor's rooster, and geese honking overhead.

• PETS - Please let us know if you're planning to bring a pet. We do charge a pet fee. Though we do accept well-behaved dogs, we prefer smaller, non-shedding breeds, as dog hair can be invasive.

• ACCESS - The ladder and hatch to the loft is for reasonably agile people - others might want to consider sleeping on the sofa bed below.

• TECHNOLOGY - Cell service is spotty at the Studio; though we have wifi, texting and phone reception is unpredictable.

• MOBILITY CONSIDERATIONS - Be aware our property is unpaved, with some uneven pathways, and may not be ideal for those with mobility limitations.

• BEACHES - Though there is a small private beach below the Studio, it is for local community use only. Other beautiful beaches are a walk or drive away.

• MINIMUM STAY - We ask for a two night minimum stay on weekends, but are happy to accommodate one night stays during the week in the off-season.

• HOT TUB - Though the hot tub is located behind our home, Studio guests have access to it 24/7. It's just a short walk up a brick path. Note that it's an older model tub with no jets, just hot water to soak in under the cedars and firs. While it’s nestled in the forest, and yours to use without others, we do occasionally walk past, as it sits alongside our home. The hot tub is also utilized at varying times by us and our Pleasant Bay Lookout guests. Typically there’s not a conflict with people wanting to use it at the same time. If someone happens to be in it when you walk up, just wait a bit and it will be all yours!

• PARKING - We can only accommodate parking for one car for Studio guests. Please let us know in advance if you'd like us to make an exception.

• ABOUT YOU - We prefer to book with guests that offer a full profile (photo + description/introduction of themselves as part of their profile. Reviews and verifications are helpful too). Thank you for understanding!

• CARBON - We provide a plug-in for electric cars and offer a discount to anyone who arrives via bike, kayak, or on foot.

• PLEASANT BAY LOOKOUT - There is one other rental on our property. Please be mindful of others, as there is usually additional guests on site.

With Chuckanut Mountain behind us and the Salish Sea in front, hikers, bikers, and kayakers will find easy access to many recreation activities from the studio. The Interurban Trail is just up the road. Heading south on the Interurban you'll reach the trails, lakes and seashore of 2683-acre Larrabee State Park in five minutes; walking north, you can stroll or bike five miles to town if you'd like, all on a forested trail overlooking the sea. The world renowned beauty of Chuckanut Drive is moments away – enjoy it by bicycle or car. Fairhaven is 10 minutes and downtown Bellingham is 20 minutes by car. The Skagit Valley is just 20 minutes south. Venturing east, you can reach the glorious mountains, rivers, and waterfalls of the North Cascades in just over an hour. Driving west, you can be on a ferry to the pristine San Juan islands in under an hour. If you'd like, you can touch a glacier and explore an island in the same day!

We feel so fortunate to live in beautiful Bellingham, on a special piece of land purchased by Peter's forward-thinking parents in 1964. We value giving back to our community and sharing the gifts we’ve received, both in our work and personal lives. Our three thriving vacation rentals are an expression of that ethic, connecting people to Whatcom County in unique and authentic ways. Our two rentals - Pleasant Bay Lookout & Chuckanut Seaside Forest Studio - in the forest by the sea have offered rejuvenation and re-connection for many; inspired numerous marriage proposals; provided retreat space; hosted honeymooners, travelers & artists; motivated adventurers to hike, bike, paddle and explore; and also offered "Il Dolce Far Niente" - The Sweetness of Doing Nothing. Our Garden Street Studio lends itself to urban explorations on foot or bike, from breweries to beaches, farmer's markets, museums and music venues, and the beautiful Western Washington University campus. We have a combined 52 years in this area, and feel grateful to be able to share the bounty of Whatcom County: proximity to the sea, nearby mountains' trails and vistas, and all that Fairhaven and Bellingham have to offer. Professionally, Aimee is the founder of an environmental education and service learning nonprofit, and has been an outdoor guide for over thirty years. She is also a life coach for teens and women. Peter is an amateur local historian, sailor, and entrepreneur (his latest project is the Heliotrope Hotel, also listed on Airbnb). As lifelong Pacific Northwesterners, both of us are committed to helping our community thrive, and enjoying and sharing all it has to offer. We are passionate about being active outdoors, healthy living, creativity, and authentic connections with others. We've greatly enjoyed the expansion of our community via our vacation rentals – sharing our special spaces with others from around the world has made the quality of our lives even better! We apply a strong sense of integrity and purpose to being vacation rental hosts, and hope to help make each guest's visit uniquely positive.

During your stay
We assume guests are coming to the Studio for a get-away, so we aim for minimal interaction. The house is out of sight from the studio, and, aside from a greeting when you arrive, we tend to not see studio guests during their stay. That said, we'd be happy to connect with the interesting people that visit, as you wish!
