A beautifully restored stone cottage set in an acre of gardens overlooking the stunning Wye valley with private woodland sauna cabin. This charming three-bedroom self-catering cottage has a master bedroom with kingsize bed, cosy living room with wood-burner, a light and spacious kitchen-dining area and two downstairs double bedrooms. It's the perfect place to find sanctuary from the modern world.

The space
A 200 year old cottage which has been lovingly restored and modernised with an ecological approach - using natural, locally sourced and recycled materials.

The floors are made from cob, using traditional and modern earthen flooring techniques to create a hard-wearing and beautiful floor that feels amazing to walk on, especially in the kitchen, downstairs bedrooms and bathroom where there is underfloor heating. The stonework has been lovingly restored with traditional lime pointing and the roof with welsh slate. The kitchen is made from locally sourced ash slabs and recycled pallet wood, and combines rustic charm with all the modern appliances you would expect: fridges, freezer, dishwasher and washer-dryer.

There is over an acre of gardens with a private woodburning sauna cabin down a path at the bottom of the garden, surrounded by trees and overlooking a meadow area. The perfect place to unwind.

The heating system runs off renewable sources and is powered by two large solar thermal panels on the roof and a wood-burning stove with back boiler. Please note that in cold weather the wood-burning stove needs lighting everyday and needs frequent feeding with firewood (supplied free of charge) to keep the cottage from getting cold. In addition to this there are electric space heaters (the cottage uses a renewable electricity supplier).

The cottage is furnished with traditional Balinese fabrics and pieces of furniture from Joe's travels, creating an exotic, soulful and earthy feel to the cottage.

Guest access
The entire cottage and gardens will be yours for your stay.

Other things to note
Due to Covid restrictions, bookings before May 17th 2021 must be for single households. Between May 17th and June 21st, bookings are limited to a maximum of two households. From the 21st onwards there are no restrictions.

Due to the unusual nature and construction of the cottage, it requires some care to ensure it stays in it's best condition and as such it is not suited for party groups or stag or hen parties.

The cottage is heated by a wood burning boiler, and electricity from a renewable supplier. The majority of heat comes from the woodburner in the living room that feeds the radiators and underfloor heating, so although there is secondary electric heating, it’s best to have the woodburner going for at least a few hours a day in cold weather. There is a woodstore in the patio garden and firewood is included in the price of your stay. Solar Panels on the roof provide hot water all year round and there are also portable electric space heaters and back-up electric heating system for the water (so theres always hot-water coming out of the tap, even on cloudy days and when the wood-burner isn't on.)

The master bedroom sits just above the living room, and the staircase leading to it is situated in the living room (which can be seen in the second picture of the living room) and has a curtain that pulls across. Due to the nature of the thin wooden floor that separates the living room and master bedroom, sound-proofing between the rooms is quite poor. Please keep this in mind if you plan on using one of the futons for sleeping (especially if one of your guests snores!).

The cottage is on a very small country lane. Although large cars and vans do fit down it without problem, it can take a while to get used to.

I moved to Brockweir from London, looking for a lifestyle closer to nature and the elements. I've spent the last two years renovating the cottage and discovering a love of natural building in the process. My next project will be to start establishing a forest garden on the land, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem with edible and medicinal plants and trees.
