Interaction with Guests

The Host: Been Living in Costa Rica for 13 years, my experience and knowledge of the lifestyle, cultures and adventures is available to help others discover the Magic of La Fortuna and other parts of this special country.

The Neighborhood

La Fortuna is an enjoyable experience for all , with flowing rivers, natural hot springs, waterfalls, the 33 mile fresh water Lake Arenal, Cerro Chatto Crater Lake , butterfly gardens and a large variety of amenities. The many vacationers who find the Pure Vida return home feeling satisfied and relaxed.

Visitors can get to Fortuna by Bus, Car or Plane. The road from both of Costa Rica’s airports are paved, well marked and scenic. The plane is a 12 passenger that flies low allowing you to see Costa Rica’s beautiful landscapes; sit back and enjoy the many waterfalls, rivers and volcanoes.

The Arenal Volcano has its own National Park (Parque National Vulcan Arenal)

This almost 30,000 acre national park allows visitors to get an even better understanding of the Arenal Volcano and a much closer look. The Flora and fauna found it this primary rain forest is some of the newest on earth.

There are plenty of nature hikes in the area; the one I highly recommend is the climb to Cerro Chatto Lake. Vulcan Chatto is a dormant volcano; its crater is filled from hundreds of year of rain fall. It is an intense uphill hike to over 3,500 feet but I assure you it is worth every step of the way. Park hours are from 8am to 5pm

The La Fortuna Waterfall is another one of Mother Nature’s tours. Take a short 4klm hike from La Fortuna and you will be standing up top of the 230 foot waterfall. Gaze upon the power of water as it rolls of and dumps into the fresh rejuvenating pools bellow. Hike down the base to the pools to recharge, relax and take some photos. Waterfalls are open from 8-5pm

Getting around

La Fortuna and all the amenities anyone could need is a 15 minute walk or 2 minute cab ride from the cabins.

  • Really enjoyed our stay at the Cabinas La Catarata. We rented the 2 bedroom room and felt really relaxed. We loved connecting with the host and his family. Was a really neat experience. This place is very close to a waterfall, which is a great attraction!

Only issue we had was with the wifi internet. It appeared to be working, but wouldn't connect to any of our American iPhones (4 of them). The host helped us connect to the nearby wifi that we could only be connected too while in the office area.

Thanks Jonathan for the otherwise pleasant stay! We will return next time we are in La Fortuna!

  • My cousin and I booked one cabin for 2 nights and absolutely loved the grounds! Our cabin was clean, comfortable, and just the right size. The noise of the critters surrounding the cabin and the river down below was just perfect. Felix was a great host and made us feel very welcome (even with the language barrier, spoke no English). The breakfast each morning was absolutely delicious. Thanks Felix for making us feel right at home, if we ever book again in the La Fortuna area we will definitely be back. :)

  • I can't say enough great things about La Fortuna and The Cabinas. My family just stayed there for four nights and we had a fantastic time. The cabins are rustic, but clean. The location is fantastic (although probably a bit far to walk into town). Felix and his wife are wonderful hosts and they made us a fantastic breakfast every morning. Lastly, Johnny. What a great guy. We told him the kind of stuff we were interested in doing, he listened, and made perfect recommendations. Hooked us up with an awesome zip-line/rappel adventure, and an incredible day at Baldi Hot Springs. In a town filled with tour operators, we felt so lucky to have found Johnny -- a guy who we could truly trust. All in all, a WONDERFUL experience.

  • After reading the reviews, we rented three of the cabinas for a stay with my family. The cabins provide a very rustic and authentic experience. We were only there for one night, which I think was enough for all of us. Just a little too rustic for us. Of the three cabins, we stayed in, I would only go back to one of them. It was clean, had a great living space and kitchen area, and was comfortable. In the other two cabins we woke up to animal droppings, and a smelly toilet. To be fair, only being there one night, we didn't address these things with the host. Had we done so, I am sure they would have figured out a resolution.

On the plus side, Felix, the owner, was great and helpful. The grounds of the cabinas are beautiful, and the breakfast was amazing. One of the members of our party was sick, and Felix even picked some leaves off a plant that would help her feel better.

  • Cabinas La Catarata was a great place to stay, I would definitely recommend it. It is right across the street from a very entertaining chocolate tour (which I recommend as well) and down the street from the waterfall walk and the property has a view of Arenal. You get your own cabin, good sized, nice kitchen, great living room, and a good sized bed room. The property also has a river running in the back, which I really enjoyed too. I definitely recommend it.

  • Although a little difficult to find, the Cabinas were comfortable for our one night stay in La Fortuna. We ended up with a really large space that could sleep up to 8, when it just me and my husband. The cabina was sparse, but clean. It's the perfect place if you're looking for a cheap, easy accommodations. It was a little difficult communicating with the host, who only spoke Spanish. We were unable to get wifi, but were provided a really delicious breakfast in the morning.

  • We´ve stayed at la cabinas for three nights and had a wonderful time. Jonathan is not the owner , he just managed the airbnb booking for Felix, the owner . Both are really nice, friendly and helpful. The area is perfect and nature is just around the corner. Location is pretty good, we always took a taxi to city which wasn't expensive at all. Breakfast was good ,beds are comfy and the house has got everything you need. All in all it was really good .

  • My husband & I stayed here for 2 nights and loved it! We had a car which was great because the walking distance to town and attractions are quite far. The cabina was exactly what we wanted and just how we imagined from the photos. The fan in the rooms were perfect for keeping us cool at night and the mornings were amazing as you are right on the edge of the jungle. We even had an armadillo walk by our patio one night! The kitchen was basic but had everything we needed and the tv & wifi was a nice addition. Breakfast each morning was amazing and the family were so friendly and kind. Highly recommend!

  • First and foremost, Jonathan is amazing, simply put. He was so quick to return my emails/texts, and even helped us book a zip lining tour at 10:30 pm the night before. He truly understands not only La Fortuna, but other areas of Costa Rica as well, and is willing to help however he can. I would very highly recommend him.

Now on to the Cabinas. They were exactly what we were looking for. A place that is clean, simple, and part of the ambiance of the area. We loved the location, and Felix, the owner, is a gem. This is a family owned business, they are honest, hardworking, and we felt very safe.
