This apartment is one of a kind, easily the largest studio you will ever see in NYC and one of the prettiest too. It's about 600 sq ft ( usually the size of 1 bedroom in nyc) and it has been just renovated with new bathroom, kitchen and a fresh coat of paint.
Nested in the heart of Greenwich Village only ONE BLOCK away from Washington Square park and 5th Avenue, this is the perfect launching pad for your vacation. First time in NYC? This is a fantastic location only minutes away from every major attraction. Walk to the park, visit NYU campus, enjoy a neighbor that is literally teeming with dozens of fantastic restaurants...then take a short walk to SoHo for some shopping (minutes away) or check out the local farmer's market in Union Square (maybe 5 minutes walk).
The area is full of great place to go out at night, from great bars to comedy club, from Jazz Clubs (like the world famous Blue Note). And of course the city best nightclubs are only a 10 min walk in the MP District.
Transportation is phenomenal, with virtually every subway line within one block and of course taxis going around the block 24/7. This is the city liveliest area and everyone who is returning to NYC will know that for a fact. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION !!

We are reviewing this as two girls from London in our twenties. The apartment was pretty perfect for us, we were really happy we chose it for our 4 night trip to the city.
Key plus points:
- A decent size. I was there with a friend and there was plenty of space. I think we would have been comfortable with three of us, we ended up just sharing the bed instead of using the sofa bed and it was perfectly comfortable.
- Great location – particularly for us as we had friends living nearby in the West village. But also Greenwich/West Village are really the best places in Manhattan. So many food options and bars, easy walking distance to so many other food and bar options!
- Alex wasn't able to be there with the keys but the pickup couldn't have been easier. He left them with the convenience store downstairs. He was very present on texts and gave detailed instructions.
- Our flight home wasn't until late but Alex let us stay in the apartment until 5. Obviously if he had had another guest coming then maybe we wouldn't have been able to.
- Kitchen was decent enough to make tea/toast. We probably could have done more but NYC is not the city to be staying in! I would say the Fridge/freezer may need attention as they aren't very cold.
- It was warm! After walking in freezing temperatures, we were so happy to get home to a cosy apartment.
To address some points mentioned in other reviews:
- There was a smell of weed in the corridors but it didn't come into Alex’s apartment and of course he has no control. But the neighbours are students and we didn't mind as it really doesn't affect your stay.
- There are two flights of stairs but having stayed in a number of other places in NYC, that seems to be the norm and two flights is actually a bonus!! Plus it’s only a pain when you have your bags. But worth taking note if you wouldn’t be able to carry.
- There was occasionally music noise and people coming in late but firstly that is part of the package of being in a city, and secondly we were in late every night so it didn't bother us.
- It was a bit dark but staying in December that wasn't really a problem. We had all lights on and did make up in the bathroom which was fine. I would maybe say it needs one more mirror near a plug as blowdrying hair was a bit of a pain without a nearby mirror.
Overall we were incredibly happy and wouldn’t hesitate to book the apartment again and recommend it. A few of our friends who live in NYC came over and were really complimentary of the flat.
Sorry for the very long review but I always think it is helpful to give detail for future guests!
Alex was super accommodating with check-in and check-out times, including allowing us to stay an extra day. He also brought over his Chromecast to link up the television. As another reviewer stated, it won't be your quietest stay in New York but this is because his apartment is in the very heart of the Village. Perfect for young people to get the New York experience!
Because Alex is a serious traveller it is often difficult to get a quick reply from him, but when you do it is very positive and friendly.
We had some issues with Alex's studio, the first being the 50 steep stairs from the street to the room which was challenging with suitcases. The room itself is exactly as shown in the pictures, however the kitchen has only one small saucepan making it difficult to prepare any cooked food there. The bathroom was in need of attention and we could not get TV reception because of a faulty remote control unit.
Our main problem however was the noise. The building has 10 apartments in it, most if not all are occupied by young undergraduate university students who party till dawn and move loudly from one apartment to another, shouting and banging doors. Also the heavy electronic bass music from the adjoining night clubs reverberates through the studio until 4.00am every night.
Perhaps young travellers would cope with these problems but, sadly we wanted a good nights sleep so as to enjoy the sights of New York ...... and we didn't get one.
Thank you for your feedback John, I am aware that noise has been an issue lately and I have been trying to address it. On a separate note, I make clear that the building has no elevator and that TV is not provided (it's only for DVDs / chrome cast use)
My nightly price is very low and adding cable to the apartment would mean extra-cost which would ultimately be passed on to my guests. This price range in NYC is the equivalent of a low-cost airline. We all enjoy the low fare and we all have to compromise on things to enjoy those low prices.
My boyfriend and I booked to stay in Alex’s apartment for 8 nights in October/November 2014. I've holidayed in NYC many times but this was my first time using Air B&B, unfortunately I am hesitant to use it again after staying there;
The apartment is appropriately advertised as being in a great position. It's very central, bordering Soho and Greenwich Village.
Unfortunately though, if you plan on trying to sleep before 4.30am you won’t be able to if you stay here.
The bass vibrations in the room made it impossible to get to sleep until the music stopped. Even with earplugs it didn’t matter, the walls and blinds vibrated from about 11.30pm-4.30am.
After 2 nights of barely sleeping I emailed Alex to check if it was only on weekends, which he said it was, he also said it’s the city that never sleeps which was annoying, I've always managed to find a quiet place to sleep when holidaying in NYC. Unfortunately the bass was still pumping at 4.30am on Tuesday, so halfway through our booking we left the apartment and checked into a Hotel.
The apartment also got quite stuffy, but if you opened the windows the smell of pot was too overpowering. We also had to hold our breath walking through level 2 of the building as someone who lives there is a chronic pot smoker (not Alex’s fault obviously but just not a pleasant thing to walk through every day). While the apartment wasn’t dirty, it wasn’t overly clean either. It hadn’t been swept/floor cleaned properly and the shower curtain was filthy and covered in mould. The toilet and shower also needed to be plunged daily to prevent them from blocking, most days we were showering in brown water that just wouldn’t drain properly.
The fridge was hardly cold at all, so if we wanted cold drinks we needed ice but the freezer doesn't work at all so we couldn’t enjoy a drink before heading out etc.
I was also told there would be a hairdryer which there wasn’t which isn’t a big deal but I especially asked ahead of time and ended up having to buy my own. Alex was good and offered to pay but it was just an extra unnecessary hassle which was annoying on top of no sleep.
Alex was a good host (apart from saying the apartment is quiet during the week), he kept in contact, answered my questions in a timely fashion and offered to get us on the VIP list to any bars/clubs that were happening in the area.
If you're coming to party all night, every night then this is the place for you. Alex will be able to recommend all the good spots and you can sleep during the day. If however, you want to experience big days/afternoons/nights in NYC and then go home to sleep by midnight-ish, don't stay here or you will end up having to pay for a hotel for half of your trip like us.
Well Danielle, I appreciate your feedback and I can assure you that I have already mentioned the excessive smoking to the landlord... Unfortunately I can't enforce the law and I can only be responsible for my apartment not for the entire building. I understand that the weekend was quite loud. To be sure, that's also not something that is in my control. As Danielle pointed out I was responsive and helpful, and I tried to do everything in my power to make their stay pleasant (I even offered to buy a hairdryer when I found that another guest had taken the one that I was keeping in the apartment) . I hope that overall Danielle had a good time - I am sorry for the noise and the smoke...cheers
