The Space

Welcome to my flat in DC!

About the apartment:

This is a one bedroom apartment in the heart of Washington DC. This flat is the original home of Bryan Crosswhite, a Chef from Lafayette, LA who is owner of the Cajun Experience Restaurants in the DC area. The apartment boasts a fully equipped, updated kitchen with full sized microwave, stovetop, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and plenty of cabinets. The apartment has plenty of natural light coming in from two full sized sliding doors to the balcony (one in living room, one in bedroom). The balcony overlooks the courtyard and has a tranquil garden view. The apartment is located on courtyard side of the building rather than the street side so it is shielded from major street noise. The living room has a full sized sofa and comfy chair, and a full sized futon for extra guests. The living room also has a 42” Flat screen LCD with Comcast cable, a modern glass L shaped desk with Wi-Fi internet. The Bedroom has a Queen sized IKEA platform bed, end tables with lamps and two modern storage drawer units. There is ample closet space and a washer and dryer inside the unit. The bathroom is large for a city apartment and has a full sized tub/shower and vanity. Sleeps 3 with two on queen bed and one on futon.

  • We stayed at the Cajun Flat for 6 nights in May. The location is absolutely perfect. We walked downtown to the DC Mall; it's walkable to Ford's Theater, Newseum and so many of the Smithsonians. You are literally a block from China Town. You are also over a pizza restaurant that has great food. You have 2 metros within 3 blocks. There's groceries (Walmart), Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy within a couple of blocks. Bryan is always a phone call away. When we arrived the cleaning crew had only left 1 washcloth and no kitchen towels and within a half hour of talking to Bryan we had them delivered. We asked for a late checkout as there was no one moving in the day we left and he accommodated the request immediately. Great customer service.
That being said, I believe Bryan needs to replenish the place; there is only 3 forks, limited glasses (2 of them cracked), no spatula and the sheets were very substandard. The TV is probably 32 inches and no DVD player. While we really weren't there to watch TV or movies, we've stayed at a lot of bnb, (website hidden) and (website hidden) places and larger TV's and DVD players seem to be pretty standard. We did the tourist thing pretty hard for 6 days and a movie would have been great to relax to.
Being in our early fifties, it became obvious very quickly that we weren't going to use the pool or hottub - it is party central every night. If you are in your 20's or 30's it would be perfect. On weekend nights you will be wakened by loud talking and shouting in the hallways right outside the condo.
We like firm mattresses and the bed and futon were perfect for us. Don't forget to bring all toiletries because there are none provided. We had about a quarter roll of toilet paper on the holder and 1 extra roll provided for 6 days. The notebook provided says no replenishments so that's what you get. It seemed to me for the price paid per night toilet paper would be a basic - we had to purchase our own.
The Concierges in the building are fantastic. We interacted with them many times and they were helpful and pleasant every time. When we arrived we had a rental car (took it back to the airport when moving to downtown DC) and delivered our luggage to the condo. The Concierge stored everything and came down to use her pass so we didn't pay a parking fee for delivering it. Actually helped us carry our luggage to the storage location until we moved in. Amazing customer service.
We would stay here again and would certainly recommend it to others. Thank you!

  • I stayed here a long weekend with my sister and her 3-year old daughter. This place is great! Great location, can walk everywhere but also really close to a Metro stop which was really convenient since we had the little one with us. The apartment itself is very nice, had everything we needed, and the concierge was also very friendly and helpful. The pool is also great if you just want to spend some time relaxing.
A few minor issues - the wifi did cut in and out a bit, but worked most of the time. Also, we had parked under the building for convenience, and were told by Bryan that we could get a discount voucher upon checkout - when we checked out, we were told they were out of vouchers so we wound up having to pay full price. Lastly, we could not find a corkscrew in the kitchen - which to me is an essential in an airbnb apartment! There's a wine store just across the street so we were able to buy one and just left it there for the next guests.

  • Pros: Very well located to sites, clean, easy check in, flexible check out, easy communication with host.

Cons: The Kitchen and Living room smell like someone had done some deep frying, the pictures are technically accurate but make the apartment look much brighter than reality, the sheets and towels were of pretty low quality, no blender.

I would probably stay here again if it wasn't for the smell.

  • The apartment was great! Nice and clean with excellent location!
It was just right for me when I'm travelling with my 2 years old girl. Convenient store just opposite the building makes everything easy even in the cold.

    Definitely recommended!

  • Just returned to sunny California from 10 fabulous days of being in DC and New York. After 4 nights of the Cajun Experience, the hotel in New York City paled in comparison. To put it simply, we were spoiled by Bryan's hospitality. The Cajun experience is all about an excellent location with short walks to DC's attractions, public transportation, shopping and restaurants. The bed and bath rooms were well stocked with linens and towels. So was the kitchen. I certainly felt like I was home, and so did my siblings. They were so thoroughly impressed that we are now planning to return in May/June.
Bryan, you've made good all your promises, all we ask is just one more, please arrange for the cherry blossoms to be in full bloom when we return in the Spring.
The Cajun Experience is going to be our first choice every time we visit DC. Thank you Bryan.
