The Space

Stay at the former Mansion of the Mayor of Brooklyn. This unique brownstone has gorgeous original details, high ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick, parquet floors, etc. As a mansion, this house is double the width of the normal brownstone buildings you will find in Brooklyn.

This listing is a light-filled, quiet, large private SUITE in a 2-room unit on the top floor (3rd floor). You can also rent the whole floor if you want both suites - perfect for families ( The other suite is also separately listed here:

Each of the two suites includes its own private bathroom and bedroom behind a locked door. Share the living room and kitchen with another guest (or not, if it's not booked). We live downstairs with two kids and are always around if you need anything. We can lend your kids our toys, books, etc. We provide hotel quality amenities: towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, hair dryer, umbrellas, guide books, maps, etc. Weekly professional cleaning service is provided at no charge.

We're located in a great section of the neighborhood of Fort Greene! You can check out the AirBnB guide to the neighborhood or (website hidden) it. Watch out for other listings on the fringe of the neighborhood, or too close to the Barclay Center. Ft. Greene is an exciting neighborhood with plenty to do, but it's also quiet and feels like a real neighborhood. Close by is Fort Greene park, the famous Brooklyn Flea market, a weekend farmer's market, the second largest subway hub in New York City, the Barclay Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and of course restaurants, cafes and bars. Just 15 minutes from Manhattan! Also, CitiBike bike sharing has bikes for rent every few blocks in a large part of Brooklyn and Manhattan. You are welcome to borrow our CitiBike card if we are not using it on a particular day.

We have WiFi or wired internet. The living room has a flat screen TV with Netflix, Hulu Plus (for viewing TV shows), and AppleTV. You can also watch a selection of hundreds of movies for both kids and grown-ups stored on our media server, most with subtitles in several languages. These movies can be seen on the TV or streamed to your iOS or Android device.

Our calendar is always up-to-date, so feel free to book any dates that show available.

We look forward to hosting you!

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood, Fort Greene, is very close to Manhattan (we are just two blocks from a subway station), but feels much more comfortable. It's quiet and spacious, with tree-lined blocks filled with historic "brownstone" houses from the 19th century.

There is a beautiful park designed by the same people who designed Central Park, a local farmers market, a famous flea market, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and fancy food stores. You can search online, as there have been many articles written about our neighborhood. Also, AirBnB has neighborhood guides you can look at.

Getting around

As for transportation, you can get to Manhattan very easily via subway. We are two blocks from the "C" train, and 7 or 8 blocks from the 2nd largest subway hub (after Grand Central) in the city, where many lines run. Depending on where you are going, and which line you need to take, it will take you 15-25 minutes to get anywhere south of 14th street, including the Financial District, SoHo, Tribeca, the Lower East Side, the Village, etc. To get to midtown is another 10 minutes.

After 10pm or so, I usually take a taxi, not so much because of safety concerns, but rather because the trains run infrequently and irregularly late at night. From below 14th st, it will cost about $15, more from midtown.

  • We loved our stay at the Mayor's Mansion last month! Claudia and Leo are fantastic hosts- kind, accommodating, and very thoughtful. The apartment is beautiful, very spacious, and a relaxing oasis. We shared the space with another couple and really enjoyed chatting with them. The common areas are lovely- complete with a huge kitchen (with everything you would ever need during your stay), a gorgeous living room with an impressive record collection, and a library that includes a guidebook put together by Claudia and Leo (extremely helpful and wonderful if you like to experience your stay like a local). We would recommend the Mayor's Mansion to anyone and hope to stay there again!

  • Claudia and Leo were fantastic hosts. Everything was tidy when I arrived, The room had a great view of the street below, and they were just very friendly overall.

I didn't use the room a lot while I was there (as I was out exploring) but none the less, it was perfect for what I needed. It also gave me a nice excuse to explore Brooklyn a little bit more.

Very generous, on time, and polite people. Would for sure stay there again!

  • Claudia & Leo were wonderful hosts and the place was beautiful - a lovely little place to relax in between adventures, close to the subway, and near plenty of restaurants and coffee shops. We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit!

  • I have stayed in many airbnb's in both the city as well as in Brooklyn, and Leo and Claudia's mansion was one of the best experiences I've had! They have a truly lovely space that's decorated with impeccable taste. The mansion also has many conveniences of a home while traveling: wifi, cookware, washer/dryer, tv, hair dryer, iron, and etc.

Fort Greene is also a great neighborhood with some awesome coffee shops, bars, and restaurants in the area. Another big plus is that the mansion is located next to almost all of the major subway lines, so I had no problem getting to and from Manhattan when I needed to.

Claudia and Leo are thoughtful hosts and have created a welcoming space for travelers to unwind and relax. It would be a treat to stay here again. Please take advantage of this opportunity!

  • My partner and I absolutely loved staying at the Mayor's Mansion. We were staying in New York for 9 days and wanted a solid base and relaxing place we could come home to after the hustle and bustle of the city. We got exactly that!
Leo was really great to communicate with leading up to our trip and ensured our arrival went smoothly. The apartment was spotless and had everything you could need to be your home away from home.
Leo and Claudia also have plenty of information prepared to help you navigate around New York which was a huge help for us. Everything was in great working condition (heating, appliances etc) and the bed was super comfy!
It is a great, central location in Brooklyn, a very short walk to the Subway and great restaurants within reach.
Leo and Claudia are committed to providing a beautiful, comfortable space for their guests and we could not recommend them enough! Definitely hope to stay again on our next visit to NY.

  • The Mayor's Mansion - Fort Greene Penthouse was amazing. It was clean, welcoming, very spacious, quite, and close to the subway. The kitchen was my favorite parts of the penthouse because it was large and function-able enough if my wife and I were interested in cooking our own meals (although we didn't) and yet cozy enough to sit down and converse over some coffee.

Also, Claudia and Leo were great hosts. They were flexible on both check in and check out time, friendly, and thorough in walking us through their place and describing nearby attractions. We immediately got the sense that they would be open to lots of questions on our stay or no questions at all, and sure enough we didn't ask any further questions after checking in and they didn't hoover over us like we were children drinking water by ourselves for the first time. Also, they were very prepared for our stay with towels set out, wifi password posted, apple TV/Netflix/etc., and a book regarding the house and the neighborhood. Needless to say (yet I'm going to say it anyway), we would definitely stay here again in the future and recommend it to anyone (though it does feel like I'd rather keep it as a hidden gem for myself).

  • Claudia and Leo's place was amazing. Very spacious room and bathroom with a comfy bed. We arrived on a cold day in NYC and the place was super warm and cozy.

Kitchen was great as was the overall vibe of the place. Simple & modern decor with very nice touches. They made sure we were comfortable and happy throughout the whole stay. There's a little office with wifi in case you need to get some work done while you are there. There's a large living room with TV that is perfect for relaxing and plenty of Kitchen tools for home cooking.

The apartment is conveniently located near various subway stops as well as a number of great restaurants and shops in case you don't want to go too far. For a relaxed taste of Brooklyn this is an ideal neighborhood to stay in.

We highly recommend it and we would definitely stay there again!

    Thanks Claudia and Leo :)

  • We spent two nights in the gorgeous Mayor's Mansion and was blown away by how spacious, comfortable and serene it was, quieter than any other NY place we've stayed and certainly much, much, much roomier. All white, tasteful decor, a generous shared kitchen/dining room and living room plus a gigantic private bathroom made this feel like a fantasy NY home not just a place to sleep. Lots of nice touches throughout (like a bottle of wine, lovely bath products, easy access wifi and a small study in the shared area if needed). The neighbourhood is absolutely wonderful, one of my favourites in the city (for arts and culture, markets, leafy streets, doughnuts), with excellent convenient access to Manhattan as well as other parts of Brooklyn. Claudia and Leo were great, great hosts, always replying super promptly, letting us leave our luggage downstairs past check out time, being cool and chilled, and just letting us pretend we lived in their wonderful house. Many, many thanks! We certainly hope to be back and have just recommended the Mayor's Mansion to friends.

Hello, Claudia and Leo live in Brooklyn in an historic brownstone mansion, once home to the Mayor of Brooklyn. We have two children, aged 5 and 7. We live on the bottom two floors and rent / airBnB the top two. We have backpacked all over the world (when we were younger) and still love to travel, to meet fellow travelers, and to share our love of all things Brooklyn and New York. We look forward to meeting you!
