The Space

Stay at the former Mansion of the Mayor of Brooklyn. This unique brownstone has gorgeous original details, high ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick, parquet floors, etc. As a mansion, this house is double the width of the normal brownstone buildings you will find in Brooklyn.

This listing is a light-filled, quiet, large private "suite" in on the top floor (3rd floor). By "suite", we mean that a lockable door separates your bedroom and private bathroom from the rest of the apartment. You can also rent both suites: the other one is listed here:

Share the living room and kitchen with another guest (or not, if it's not booked). We are always around if you need anything. We can lend your kids our toys, books, etc. We provide hotel quality amenities: towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, hair dryer, umbrellas, guide books, maps, etc. Weekly professional cleaning service is provided at no charge.

We're located in a great section of the neighborhood of Fort Greene! You can check out the AirBnB guide to the neighborhood or (website hidden) it. Watch out for other listings on the fringe of the neighborhood, or too close to the Barclay Center. Ft. Greene is an exciting neighborhood with plenty to do, but it's also quiet and feels like a real neighborhood. Close by is Fort Greene park, the famous Brooklyn Flea market, a weekend farmer's market, the second largest subway hub in New York City, the Barclay Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and of course restaurants, cafes and bars. Just 15 minutes from Manhattan! Also, CitiBike bike sharing has bikes for rent every few blocks in a large part of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

We have WiFi or wired internet. The living room has a flat screen TV with Netflix, Hulu Plus (for viewing TV shows), and AppleTV. You can also watch a selection of hundreds of movies for both kids and grown-ups stored on our media server, most with subtitles in several languages. These movies can be seen on the TV or streamed to your iOS or Android device.

Our calendar is always up-to-date, so feel free to book any dates that show available.

We look forward to hosting you!

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood, Fort Greene, is very close to Manhattan (we are just two blocks from a subway station), but feels much more comfortable. It's quiet and spacious, with tree-lined blocks filled with historic "brownstone" houses from the 19th century.

There is a beautiful park designed by the same people who designed Central Park, a local farmers market, a famous flea market, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and fancy food stores. You can search online, as there have been many articles written about our neighborhood. Also, AirBnB has neighborhood guides you can look at.

Getting around

As for transportation, you can get to Manhattan very easily via subway. We are two blocks from the "C" train, and 7 or 8 blocks from the 2nd largest subway hub (after Grand Central) in the city, where many lines run. Depending on where you are going, and which line you need to take, it will take you 15-25 minutes to get anywhere south of 14th street, including the Financial District, SoHo, Tribeca, the Lower East Side, the Village, etc. To get to midtown is another 10 minutes.

After 10pm or so, I usually take a taxi, not so much because of safety concerns, but rather because the trains run infrequently and irregularly late at night. From below 14th st, it will cost about $15, more from midtown.

  • My sister and I really enjoyed our stay at the Mayor's Mansion. We loved the safe, peaceful, leafy tranquility of Brooklyn after sightseeing or shopping in Manhattan. The underground train service is within easy 5 minute walk. The apartment is well equipped with everything and more that a traveller needs. Lovely toiletries in the bathroom. In the kitchen, coffee, milk and little leftover condiments, crackers etc left by previous guests. We enjoyed breakfast in the spacious kitchen every morning. The bed was comfortable and the room, located at the back facing the garden (back yard!) is quiet. We recommend you do the walk in guide provided by Claudia to get to know neighbourhood, restaurants, deli etc. Leo very prompt at responding to emails when we needed help.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Mayor's Mansion. The apartment is spacious, clean, beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you might need during your stay. We felt at home and were happy to return to the peaceful apartment after a long day in the city. The neighborhood is really nice - there are parks, shops, restaurants etc. and the nearest subway station is only 1,5 blocks away. We truly recommend Mayor's Mansion!

  • We absolutely loved our stay in Brooklyn - the flat is beautiful, very spacious, quiet and overlooking the garden and perfectly located. Claudia is the best host, incredibly helpful and kind - she runs the airbnb very professionally. It is the first time I enjoyed staying in NY as the flat immediately becomes your second home and a quiet place away from but very close to the buzz of NY. Thank you Claudia!

  • My wife and I visited NYC and we stayed at Claudia and Leo's lovely apartment. It was very clean, well laid out and very spacious. It was much more affordable than a hotel and we ended up getting a lot more. Fort Greene is a nice neighborhood and there are many subway stops within walking distance (we found 2 in less than 4 minutes of walking and there are more than that nearby!). The kitchen has all the equipment you would need to prepare a quick meal so when we got tired of eating out we decided to eat in and it was easy. We will recommend the apartment to our friends. All the best!

  • We loved our stay at the Mayor's Mansion last month! Claudia and Leo are fantastic hosts- kind, accommodating, and very thoughtful. The apartment is beautiful, very spacious, and a relaxing oasis. We shared the space with another couple and really enjoyed chatting with them. The common areas are lovely- complete with a huge kitchen (with everything you would ever need during your stay), a gorgeous living room with an impressive record collection, and a library that includes a guidebook put together by Claudia and Leo (extremely helpful and wonderful if you like to experience your stay like a local). We would recommend the Mayor's Mansion to anyone and hope to stay there again!

  • Claudia and Leo were fantastic hosts. Everything was tidy when I arrived, The room had a great view of the street below, and they were just very friendly overall.

I didn't use the room a lot while I was there (as I was out exploring) but none the less, it was perfect for what I needed. It also gave me a nice excuse to explore Brooklyn a little bit more.

Very generous, on time, and polite people. Would for sure stay there again!

Hello, Claudia and Leo live in Brooklyn in an historic brownstone mansion, once home to the Mayor of Brooklyn. We have two children, aged 5 and 7. We live on the bottom two floors and rent / airBnB the top two. We have backpacked all over the world (when we were younger) and still love to travel, to meet fellow travelers, and to share our love of all things Brooklyn and New York. We look forward to meeting you!
