About this listing
Brand new studio Earthship as seen on Off Grid Build! Just search for "Off The Grid Build" to find it. Experience Off Grid living with all the modern amenities in the beautiful high desert mesa just outside Taos, NM.
I just finished building this house myself over the past 3 years. It is 99% complete. There are a few finishing touches that are not done but the house is 100% comfortable and 100% livable.
This house is called an Earthship, a totally off grid house that catches its own rain water, generates its own electricity and stays at a steady 72 degrees all year round without the use of any fuel or electricity what-so-ever!
Don't let the term "Off Grid" fool you, this house has all the modern amenities. WiFi, Netflix with a flat screen tv and Bluray player, large refrigerator, large oven/range with a powerful exhaust hood, large bathroom with a luxuriously deep tub and stone all around. There is even a high efficiency washing machine in case you need to do laundry.
The sun heats the house passively, but don't worry, you can still sleep in after a late light with black out shades that let you control when the sun illuminates this beautiful space.
Interaction with Guests
Guests will be met by the host and given a tour of the house. Information will be given on how to live in an off grid Earthship so that your stay will be easy and fun! There is even a DVD that explains all the functions of the house.
The neighborhood is very quiet. My favorite thing to do is take the dog for a walk at sunset.
Other Things to Note
Dogs are permitted with an extra $25 fee per dog. That one time fee is for your entire stay no matter how long. There is one queen size bed that sleeps 2 and a really comfortable full sized futon mattress that sleeps an additional 2 guests. Additional adult guests are $15/night each. Kids are free. 4 guest max.
Please no smoking inside the house and keep dogs off the bed.

Our stay in Dan's Earthship was mystical from the beginning. The views and the surroundings are stunning, and Taos is in an inspiring place. We didn't want to leave!
What a wonderful experience my wife and I had at the Earthship. We really enjoyed the comfort and quiet it provided for us. We enjoyed how the Earthship gave you the balance of most of the modern amenities we are used to, while being set away from civilization to enjoy a star spectacular at night that was mindblowing. Becka did a great job helping us getting familiar with the Earthship and the area, and we really appreciate her friendly, welcoming demeanor. Highly recommend to anyone needing the time to unplug. We look forward to returning soon!
We absolutely loved Dans Earthship! It's peaceful and serene environment is exactly what we needed to start our vacation. The community is very quiet and only a short drive into Taos. The amount of stars seen at night is remarkable. Also saw the brightest rainbow in my life. Would definitely recommend this earthship!
The Earthship was hands down one of my favorite AirBnB experiences because it was such an incredible location, structure, and learning experience! This is exactly why AirBnB is so extraordinary: we would never have had the opportunity to experience such a vibrant community and unique living habitat. We learned all about packed earth, the visionary man who started the earthship communities, and the way that a house can be completely off the grid. In addition, the studio is situated in gorgeous sagebrush plains. It was so quiet, peaceful, stunningly beautiful: we want to return as soon as we can, and we are totally convinced that we want to build our own earthship as well. In addition, Becky was such a sweet hostess. We had a little trouble coming in during the evening, and she was so great at communicating and hosting us. Highest recommendation and one of the coolest AirBnB houses ever.
Loved the earthship! It was as described and had all of the modern conveniences. Rebecca welcomed us and made us feel at home.
Communicating with the host and the property managers was difficult. A few days before our arrival, I emailed both Joanna and Becka to schedule a meetup to receive keys and instructions. I did not receive a reply from either manager. The next day I emailed Dan who did not respond. The day after, I called Joanna, leaving her a message and permission to text. Joanna texted back with instructions and graciously allowed us to arrive a couple of hours early so we wouldn't have to hang out in town with all of our luggage waiting for our check in time.
We were very excited to arrive at the earthship. We had been researching these homes for awhile and this was our chance to test drive one. However, our experience was not a good one.
We expected bugs in and around the earthship and wildlife because of the location. The greenhouse had a lot of plantings of something which gave off an intense scent. We assumed it was to ward off bugs naturally; it was not successful. Right away my boyfriend had an allergic reaction and an asthma attack. And the greenhouse was full of bugs. Because of these two things, we could not use the ventilation system. As a result, the earthship became very hot and humid which is not good for an asthmatic. One cooling tube was easily located and the second was closed off by the refrigerator. That second tube had something squeaking in it later that night, so we figured the tube door was closed for a reason.
Later in the night my boyfriend had his second asthma attack. During that attack, we heard a loud snap. We discovered four mousetraps around the toe kick of the counters in the kitchen area; one mousetrap had a dead mouse. We were all over that kitchen area barefoot, as there was a request to remove our shoes. We could have easily stepped onto a mousetrap and broken a toe. No warning of a rodent issue was given to us. We decided to leave at that point. It took a lot of time to find a hotel which would receive us at 2am.
We did enjoy the scenery outside of the earthship. I never would have thought a sunset could appear to be 360 degrees! It was absolutely gorgeous. And quiet. We took a lot of pictures of the sunset and came back outside to cool off and to take in more of the scenery at night.
We both grew up in rural settings and have lived on farms, camped, and 'roughed it' a lot in our lives. We could have toughed it out for one more night, but I was concerned about my boyfriend's allergic reactions. I did email Dan and still have not heard from him.
I did text Joanna about the issue and informed her we left after staying 12 hours. The internet access and cell reception was horrible in that area so we
I am very sorry you found your stay to be difficult. First to address the allergies, mice and bugs. We have very low allergen plants in the greenhouse, but there is a green house with plants nonetheless which is well advertised. All greenhouses have dirt and plants which means they also have bugs. For a short while the white flies came and we took care of it. Unfortunately, the timing of your stay was just right on that one. Same with the mice. The entire community was fighting the mice with the heavy rains we have had. I hope this explanation helps you understand the reasons for these things and that for any of them to have occurred was just terrible timing.
As for the communication, I can only assume that something is happening on your end. We have no unresponded emails in our Airbnb account. We are extremely adamant about responding to email quickly. Cell reception can be spotty on the mesa, which is why our informative email invites you to contact us several days before your trip in addition to our normal 24 hour phone call. As far as internet goes, we have stellar wifi in the house so that you don't have to rely on your cell network.
Poor cell reception, and the rare mouse or bug are the trade offs for the jaw dropping beauty and peace that we have on the Mesa. As you can see, over 99% of our guests have not experienced these inconveniences and I am truly sorry that you did. I hope you see our good intentions with the refund we gave and with this thoughtful response.
About the Host, Dan
Hi! My name is Dan and I built an Earthship in Taos, NM with my bare hands. The entire project is documented on my Website (website hidden) and on (email hidden)(website hidden).
I love to travel around the world, grow my own food, and build furniture and houses. Currently I'm a sawyer in Brooklyn, NY. That's right, I own a business that saws lumber from fallen New York City trees.
I love the time I get to spend at my home in Taos, but when I'm not there it's available for all of you to enjoy it as well!
