Brand new studio Earthship as seen on Off Grid Build! Just search for "Off The Grid Build" to find it. Experience Off Grid living with all the modern amenities in the beautiful high desert mesa just outside Taos, NM.

The Space

I am offering one night stays, but please inquire about pricing.

I just finished building this house myself over the past 3 years. It is 99% complete. There are a few finishing touches that are not done but the house is 100% comfortable and 100% livable.

This house is called an Earthship, a totally off grid house that catches its own rain water, generates its own electricity and stays at a steady 72 degrees all year round without the use of any fuel or electricity what-so-ever!

Don't let the term "Off Grid" fool you, this house has all the modern amenities. WiFi, Netflix with a flat screen tv and Bluray player, large refrigerator, large oven/range with a powerful exhaust hood, large bathroom with a luxuriously deep tub and stone all around. There is even a high efficiency washing machine in case you need to do laundry.

The sun heats the house passively, but don't worry, you can still sleep in after a late light with black out shades that let you control when the sun illuminates this beautiful space.

Interaction with Guests

Guests will be met by the host and given a tour of the house. Information will be given on how to live in an off grid Earthship so that your stay will be easy and fun! There is even a DVD that explains all the functions of the house.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is very quiet. My favorite thing to do is take the dog for a walk at sunset.

Other Things to Note

Dogs are permitted with an extra $25 fee per dog. That one time fee is for your entire stay no matter how long. There is one queen size bed that sleeps 2 and a really comfortable full sized futon mattress that sleeps an additional 2 guests. Additional adult guests are $15/night each. Kids are free. 4 guest max.

Please no smoking inside the house and keep dogs off the bed.

  • Staying in the earthship was a lovely, surreal experience. I enjoyed being next to snow capped mountains near the rio grande. It was the perfect place to relax. The whole house was solar powered, which was another plus! Sustainable living is very inspiring. Perfect place to stay in Taos!

  • We really enjoyed staying at Dan's earthship, both for the experience of being right in the middle of high desert and for the education about more sustainable living approaches. From the inside, the design highlights the sky. We found it entrancing to watch it changing during the day and at night the stars were riotous.
I had thought from the pictures that it would be more isolated, but found that beyond the low berm right in front of the house, there's a little earthship "development" inside an old gravel quarry.
The hosts were responsive and sweet and we'd definitely stay again in the future.

  • 4 of us with a small dog stayed in the Earthship. It was a very comfortable and large studio space with fully equipped kitchen and full bath. The temp stayed right around 72 no matter how hot or cold it got outside.
What a great experience to live off the grid while on vacation and still have all the comforts of home.

  • We had an awesome stay at this cool earthship. Dan was really easy to work with and Rebecca met us and made us feel right at home. I can't wait to stay here again sometime!

  • Dan's earthship is in the funkiest neighborhood/community of earthship homes! It feels like you're on the moon out there in the mesa but his well-crafted and well-functioning home serves as a welcome retreat after hiking the Rio Grande Gorge and enjoying various hot springs as we did while staying at Dan's place. I would recommend it to anyone--especially couples with dogs. Beautiful mountain views and star-gazing at night!

  • Incredible experience. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway this is the place to be.- Even though the average low temperature at night was 22 degrees outside, the earthship remained at a comfortable 72 degrees. My husband and I marveled at this concept and also enjoyed stargazing from the bed (literally)! While we didn't take advantage of the Netflix, we browsed through Dan's small library of inspirational books. There's even a copy of Fox Fire! I love to cook my own food and the kitchen was a great working space: You can gaze out the windows while you are cooking and feel enveloped by the landscape- My husband and I are avid hikers and the locality is excellent for enjoying the outdoors. Highly recommended for those interested in sustainability and interconnectedness. Dan's studio earthship made us wish this place was our home.

  • I stayed in Dan's earthship with my partner and a friend of ours and the three of us had the most wonderful time. This studio earthship is incredibly beautiful and well maintained, the kitchen is perfect for cooking and hanging out (very well stocked for cooking which was awesome), and the huge windows, comfortable bed, and peace and quiet made everything so so perfect. It was just the get away from the hustle and bustle we were looking for! It was the perfect close-but-out-of-the-way feeling to both Taos, Taos Ski Valley, and Ojo Caliente which is what we did with our three days :). We can't thank Dan and Joanna enough for their impeccable and thoughtful care of the house, and for giving us the opportunity to stay there! We can't wait to come back :).

  • My boyfriend Brian and I eventually want to build an earthship on the East Coast, and this was a great introduction in studio-style earthship construction. It was just the right amount of space for a couple. Dan and his host Joanna and Becca were always there to answer the phone and answer any of our questions. My stay gave me a better appreciation for how earthships work and are maintained. Other perks are its clean, modern aesthetics, seeing desert rabbits every day, and also seeing the variety of other earthships in the "community". We cooked 90% of our meals on the stove/oven. Our stay is something we will never forget. Highly recommended.

  • House was great! We arrived at night in the dark, but were still able to find it just fine, and had no problem working any of the amenities. The attached video is a bit long, but mainly what you need to know is that you should check the solar power level located in the closet to make sure it is above 70 when you arrive, and if it isn't, you should call and let the owner know. Otherwise, you can watch the section about using the hatch ceiling to release heat if necessary, and I felt like the rest was super self-explanatory! Would totally stay here again- so close to the Rio Grande Gorge bridge, and so memorable. Loved it.

  • My boyfriend and I LOVED the Earthship!
We stayed here for three nights with our dog, relaxing in Dan's unique home. We enjoyed waking up with the sun, cooking meals, watching Netflix, and relaxing aboard the Earthship.

We were very impressed by the thoughtful design of the ship - (i.e. grey water reuse, solar heating and electric, and rainwater retention) - in December, the Earthship was a toasty 72 degrees. At points we even found it a bit too toasty and made use of the underground cooling vents.

We truly felt at home on the Earthship. It is a magical place.

    Thank you Dan!

Hi! My name is Dan and I built an Earthship in Taos, NM with my bare hands. The entire project is documented on my Website (website hidden) and on (email hidden)/offthegridbuild. I love to travel around the world, grow my own food, and build furniture and houses. Currently I'm a sawyer in Brooklyn, NY. That's right, I own a business that saws lumber from fallen New York City trees. I love the time I get to spend at my home in Taos, but when I'm not there it's available for all of you to enjoy it as well!
