Brand new studio Earthship as seen on Off Grid Build! Just search for "Off The Grid Build" to find it. Experience Off Grid living with all the modern amenities in the beautiful high desert mesa just outside Taos, NM.
I just finished building this house myself over the past 3 years. It is 99% complete. There are a few finishing touches that are not done but the house is 100% comfortable and 100% livable.
This house is called an Earthship, a totally off grid house that catches its own rain water, generates its own electricity and stays at a steady 72 degrees all year round without the use of any fuel or electricity what-so-ever!
Don't let the term "Off Grid" fool you, this house has all the modern amenities. WiFi, Netflix with a flat screen tv and Bluray player, large refrigerator, large oven/range with a powerful exhaust hood, large bathroom with a luxuriously deep tub and stone all around. There is even a high efficiency washing machine in case you need to do laundry.
The sun heats the house passively, but don't worry, you can still sleep in after a late light with black out shades that let you control when the sun illuminates this beautiful space.
Interaction with Guests
Guests will be met by the host and given a tour of the house. Information will be given on how to live in an off grid Earthship so that your stay will be easy and fun! There is even a DVD that explains all the functions of the house.
The neighborhood is very quiet. My favorite thing to do is take the dog for a walk at sunset.
Other Things to Note
Dogs are permitted with an extra $25 fee per dog. That one time fee is for your entire stay no matter how long. There is one queen size bed that sleeps 2 and a really comfortable full sized futon mattress that sleeps an additional 2 guests. Additional adult guests are $15/night each. Kids are free. 4 guest max.
Please no smoking inside the house and keep dogs off the bed.

Phenomenal time. Don't wait any longer and book this place. My girlfriend and I stayed here for our 4 year anniversary. The home was more luxurious than expected- the kitchen was fully stocked with appliances and kitchen accessories and the bathroom had fresh towels and an extra large tub. Wifi speed was fast and Netflix streamed great on his television. The nearest grocery store is 20 minutes away so stop by Cid's Market in Taos before you arrive. I could t have been happier here. You're in a rural community so don't forget flashlights and jackets for evening strolls. Lots of Coyotes come out at night. Taos is a beautiful city--visit before it gets touristy!
Dan's Earthship was an amazing experience. I stayed two nights with my 7yo daughter and she didn't want to leave. I was a little nervous that the location would feel remote for a mother-daughter team, however in reality it's only 20 mins drive from Taos and is surrounded by a community of other Earthships. Johanna and her kids welcomed us on arrival and we felt very safe and comfortable in the house.
The property is clean, warm and cozy. My daughter learned all about being "off-grid" and gained a deeper appreciation of sustainable living.
Watching the storm clouds roll across huge desert skies, and the blanket of stars at night, was breathtaking. An Earthship stay should be on everyone's bucket list.
So happy to hear you and your daughter loved the house! Out of respect, you mentioned the lack of additional seating in your private feedback to me, but I'd like to address that publicly. You are not the only guests who has requested that. More seating just arrived! There are now two loungy style chairs in the house. I'm sorry it came literally days late for you, but they are there for your next stay!
When you stay in a place made out of cans, bottles and tires and that uses mostly rain for your water needs, it's hard to give a conventional review. For our part (my girlfriend and I), we almost passed out from joy each moment we were at Dan's earthship.
Every amenity you'd expect at a hotel was available here. But it was even better! With fresh mint and a fire pit, we wanted for nothing. It got up to 70 degrees during the day, and down to 27 at night, and we were perfectly comfortable inside.
But it was outside we enjoyed most. The people in the earthship community must take quietude and privacy very seriously because we literally heard nothing. Utter and complete stillness and a blanket of stars from horizon to horizon - broken only by the occasional coyotes in the distance, which was the coolest thing ever.
Everything about our five days here was magical.
Only two caveats we could think of: 1) if you're from a city or otherwise aren't used to the complete absence of background sounds, you may want to think about bringing some white noise. It's THAT quiet.
Also, when you first find the place, get your bearings by marking physical landmarks, especially if you're driving at night. There are several close neighbors, but the earthships kind of all look alike to the uninitiated. And Google maps/Apple's location services hasn't quite gotten a bead on Dan's address yet.
Both the quiet and the relative isolation were draws for us, but we thought we'd "warn" other city folk about our experiences.
We hope we can come back soon. And often.
Oh, and Rebecca (our host) was super attentive and super nice.

Staying at Earthship was a really amazing and unique experience. The studio is beautifully made and a wonderful place for peace, quiet and relaxation. We loved the large windows that let the natural sunlight in and kept the studio cozy and warm. It is a bit difficult to find the place at night, since reception isn't great out there, so I definitely recommend trying to check in while there's still daylight! :) thanks for the great stay, Dan! Definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
We LOVED staying in the Earthship. We had everything we needed. It was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed watching the night sky, only wishing that the moon wasn't full during our stay so we could have seen more stars. It was delightful to stand in the greenhouse and soak in the warmth of the sun. Thanks, Dan for making your earthship available for others to share the off-grid experience.
We had a fantastic few days staying in Dan's Earthship. The house is very good looking, inside and out. Upon arriving, we rewatched Dan's video, and that made the whole experience much more enjoyable. My favorite activity during the stay was to sit in the green house with the air vents open, feeling the cool NM air rush over, gazing at the distant mountain range. It was a perfect spot for reading, too. The only criticism we had was the lack of comfortable seating to lounge in. The bar chairs worked, but not for long sessions. Instead, we used the lawn chairs, albeit there is probably a more elegant solution out there. Overall, a fantastic house to stay in. It has that remote feeling, while only being 15 min from Taos.

Hi! My name is Dan and I built an Earthship in Taos, NM with my bare hands. The entire project is documented on my Website (website hidden) and on (email hidden)/offthegridbuild.
I love to travel around the world, grow my own food, and build furniture and houses. Currently I'm a sawyer in Brooklyn, NY. That's right, I own a business that saws lumber from fallen New York City trees.
I love the time I get to spend at my home in Taos, but when I'm not there it's available for all of you to enjoy it as well!
