I am offering one night stays, but please inquire about pricing.
I just finished building this house myself over the past 3 years. It is 99% complete. There are a few finishing touches that are not done but the house is 100% comfortable and 100% livable.
This house is called an Earthship, a totally off grid house that catches its own rain water, generates its own electricity and stays at a steady 72 degrees all year round without the use of any fuel or electricity what-so-ever!
Don't let the term "Off Grid" fool you, this house has all the modern amenities. WiFi, Netflix with a flat screen tv and Bluray player, large refrigerator, large oven/range with a powerful exhaust hood, large bathroom with a luxuriously deep tub and stone all around. There is even a high efficiency washing machine in case you need to do laundry.
The sun heats the house passively, but don't worry, you can still sleep in after a late light with black out shades that let you control when the sun illuminates this beautiful space.
Guests will be met by the host and given a tour of the house. Information will be given on how to live in an off grid Earthship so that your stay will be easy and fun! There is even a DVD that explains all the functions of the house.
The neighborhood is very quiet. My favorite thing to do is take the dog for a walk at sunset.
Dogs are permitted with an extra $25 fee per dog. That one time fee is for your entire stay no matter how long. There is one queen size bed that sleeps 2 and a queen size air mattress that sleeps an additional 2 guests. Additional adult guests are $15/night each. Kids are free. 4 guest max.
Incredible experience. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway this is the place to be.- Even though the average low temperature at night was 22 degrees outside, the earthship remained at a comfortable 72 degrees. My husband and I marveled at this concept and also enjoyed stargazing from the bed (literally)! While we didn't take advantage of the Netflix, we browsed through Dan's small library of inspirational books. There's even a copy of Fox Fire! I love to cook my own food and the kitchen was a great working space: You can gaze out the windows while you are cooking and feel enveloped by the landscape- My husband and I are avid hikers and the locality is excellent for enjoying the outdoors. Highly recommended for those interested in sustainability and interconnectedness. Dan's studio earthship made us wish this place was our home.
I stayed in Dan's earthship with my partner and a friend of ours and the three of us had the most wonderful time. This studio earthship is incredibly beautiful and well maintained, the kitchen is perfect for cooking and hanging out (very well stocked for cooking which was awesome), and the huge windows, comfortable bed, and peace and quiet made everything so so perfect. It was just the get away from the hustle and bustle we were looking for! It was the perfect close-but-out-of-the-way feeling to both Taos, Taos Ski Valley, and Ojo Caliente which is what we did with our three days :). We can't thank Dan and Joanna enough for their impeccable and thoughtful care of the house, and for giving us the opportunity to stay there! We can't wait to come back :).
My boyfriend Brian and I eventually want to build an earthship on the East Coast, and this was a great introduction in studio-style earthship construction. It was just the right amount of space for a couple. Dan and his host Joanna and Becca were always there to answer the phone and answer any of our questions. My stay gave me a better appreciation for how earthships work and are maintained. Other perks are its clean, modern aesthetics, seeing desert rabbits every day, and also seeing the variety of other earthships in the "community". We cooked 90% of our meals on the stove/oven. Our stay is something we will never forget. Highly recommended.
House was great! We arrived at night in the dark, but were still able to find it just fine, and had no problem working any of the amenities. The attached video is a bit long, but mainly what you need to know is that you should check the solar power level located in the closet to make sure it is above 70 when you arrive, and if it isn't, you should call and let the owner know. Otherwise, you can watch the section about using the hatch ceiling to release heat if necessary, and I felt like the rest was super self-explanatory! Would totally stay here again- so close to the Rio Grande Gorge bridge, and so memorable. Loved it.
My boyfriend and I LOVED the Earthship!
We stayed here for three nights with our dog, relaxing in Dan's unique home. We enjoyed waking up with the sun, cooking meals, watching Netflix, and relaxing aboard the Earthship.
We were very impressed by the thoughtful design of the ship - (i.e. grey water reuse, solar heating and electric, and rainwater retention) - in December, the Earthship was a toasty 72 degrees. At points we even found it a bit too toasty and made use of the underground cooling vents.
We truly felt at home on the Earthship. It is a magical place.
Thank you Dan!
Looking forward to coming back! I had never heard of an earthship but after staying here I will certainly be doing some research on the matter. The house itself is amazing, both as a work of art and being completely off-grid and self-sustaining, yet with all the comforts of modern living. It is very finely crafted, and Dan's attention to detail can be seen in every square inch. My favorite part is the sun room which collects heat during the day. Despite it being cold and snowy outside, the sun room with its plants and lizards got up to over 100 degrees, yet inside the house it always stayed right around 72. The house is extremely clean and one of the most quiet places I've been, all I could hear at times was my own heartbeat. I highly recommend this place and can't wait until my next stay.
So nice we came right back! Loved this place, it's truly something special. Still dreaming of the starry night sky and those absolutely gorgeous blazing sunrises and sunsets. The place was so nice and cozy to come home to after cruising around all the sights in and around Taos. Highly recommend it! We were in great communication with Dan and two nearby folks who were in the community to help us out with a few things. We had such a great time we even arranged to have a look at some of the other Earthships in the community with a local Realtor!
What an incredible place to explore northern New Mexico from! Every night we watched the incredible sunsets over the Taos Plateau and were greeted by the sun coming up over the Sangre de Christo mountains. The stars at night! We drove out to Abiquiu, Santa Fe and Taos to visit all the museums, Georgia O'Keeffe's place and spent a night at Mabel Dodge Luhan's home. It was the perfect launching pad for all those adventures. Communication with Dan was perfect and his wonderful caretakers were incredibly generous showing us the ins and outs of the Earthship. We even got a great tip of some hot springs in the Rio Grande Gorge nearby. Right now it's about 20F out but we cracked a window to keep the place from warming up too much. Coming home after a day out exploring the area in the dead of winter to a place filled with greenery and warm stone floors is so welcoming. Thanks Dan, you have a really enchanted little spot here!
We arrived in Taos at night. It was a little difficult to find the road and home in the dark since there are few lights. But, one of Dan's friends met us on the road to make sure we got to the place. Once we got there everything was great. Dan really puts an effort to make the place clean and to make everyday items accessible and ready. The good thing about the little amount of outdoor lights is the amazing night sky that can be seen from the bed! Dan also had available books and other resources which helped us become more familiar with the earth ship. Be sure to check out his videos on off grid build, they are a good introduction to the building.
My partner, pup and I spent Thanksgiving at Dan's Earthship and had a fantastic time. The house is beautiful, kitchen is well stocked with utensils (key for holiday cooking) and Joanna was lovely. Spend several days if you have tie; we wished we had time to stay longer. Cannot wait to return!
