Away from marina's and traffic. This is a nice, peaceful and relaxing time on the water! This is not land based. This is camping on the water a half mile from land, with lots of amenities. Come enjoy the serenity!
Free Spirit has a small galley with a two burner stove, toaster oven, bbq, cooking utensils, pots and pans, dishes and silverware. A/C and generator. Two double futons with throw pillows and blankets. Bed linens and towels. Large coolers. Two upper decks one with a picnic table and one with lounge chairs. Small head (toilet).
This is the perfect getaway to explore the beautiful pristine waters surrounding Key West. There are very few places to camp in the keys and this is my answer to outdoor enthusiasts who like to get away! Or this can be a nice peaceful place to stay away from it all..with a 15 minute kayak paddle to one of 3 marina's and bar and restaurant.
Guests can park at Cow Key Marina. Persons and gear will be transported to the boat with a 24' skiff on the day of check-in and you will be picked up by boat on the day of check-out. Check-ins are best done during daylight hours.
Kayaks are included. The kayaks are your only transportation for the duration of your stay, so be sure kayaking is something you like to do! Also since you are not on land it's important that you know how to swim.
Interaction with Guests
When we arrive at Free Spirit I will show you how everything works on the boat and leave you with kayaks. You are on your own to enjoy your time on the water. I'm just a phone call away if you have any questions.
If you want to jump on the skiff with me and get to one of our remote Islands for the day let me know.... Or just save time for my mangrove maze tour....I'm told it is truly AMAZING! If there is something I don't do....I know who does. When sending me a request Please tell me a little about yourself and why your choosing Free Spirit.
I love watching the dolphins coming to play, watching the baracuda's chasing bali hoo and relaxing on the upper deck watching the sunset turn into a star filled night! I love the feeling of being out and away from it all. Waking just before sunrise and going kayaking and taking it all in. Trust me our sunrises are just as amazing as our sunsets.
There is parking at Cow Key Marina. Its a short cab ride from the airport. Want bikes, scooters or electric cars? Call me and I will arrange for you.
Other Things to Note
The houseboat is a half mile from land. It is not in a marina......Again this is camping on the water...You will need to bring food and ice and anything else you might bring when your camping that I have not listed...... Myself or my crew will do everything possible to show you the best the keys has to offer! Our goal is that you say " wow what a great trip!!! "
Well its always been a house rule of mine....you break it you buy it....your credit card will be held responsible for any damages. If you drink...drink responsibly. If you smoke....smoke outside and again smoke responsibly. No ciggy butts or any trash in our pristine waters please!!!! Unfortunately no pets are allowed.
An experience, not just a place to stay. We loved being out on the bay, reading in the sun on the top deck, swimming, kayaking to lunch--as AJ says, camping on the water.
For our family of 4 it worked but was a little tight. You should know that there's not much privacy and there'll be climbing up and down to use all parts of the boat.
Other useful info: the water is very shallow (no diving off boat but very safe as you can stand even at high tide). It's more like RV camping: there is running water for dishes, a feeble shower, electricity via inverter for electronics and other small loads or generator if you want to use the toaster oven or cofee maker.
AJ and Natalie were really great. They accommodated to our late arrival (plane delay) and when there was a mechanical problem on board jumped right on a fix.
If you're the kind of person who needs everything just so and working perfectly, this probably isn't for you. But if you want something off the beaten path (like us) we'd highly recommend it.
I stayed for two nights and had a good time on the boat. It was fun kayaking from and to the boat and very nice to have your peace and quiet on the boat, using the build in radio on the boat in the evening to listen to "Radio Ritmo" (102.5 FM, highly recommended :) whilst having the boat illuminated by candlelight.
I think the boat could use a little more maintenance though. For example one window has it's frame missing, out of 3 ceiling lights on board only 1 is working (the one in the toilet) and the bbq grill should be thrown away imo (really dirty). Also the boat has a (admittedly small) termite problem.
I didn't raise this with AJ or Valery, who were both really nice, though, so I guess I can't really complain and in the end I still enjoyed my stay (as mentioned above).
We had such a great time on the "Free Spirit" - just looking at the picture of the boat makes me wish we were there. It really is "camping on water" and such a relaxing contrast to Key West! The boat itself is very clean, well supplied and quite stable (4 anchors), so you don't have to worry about much motion (my husband can get seasick, and he had no problem). The water around the boat is actually quite shallow, so there's really nothing to worry about. The sea kayaks are easy to use and we had fun exploring the mangroves on our own (AJ was feeling under the weather). It was great to be unplugged (although cellphones do work) we watched the sun set and the moon rise every evening, played cards at night - favourite memory is my 12 year old reading aloud to us from "The Old Man and the Sea". A magical family vacation.
We spent 3 days on the free spirit and it was an awesome experience. We were prepared for the barebones experience and as long as you come with the right mindset it will be awesome for anyone.
The attitude of AJ and everyone else at Kayak Kings was great, warm, and welcoming, the boat, kitchen, bed, linens etc were clean and nice.
The things that I had not really though about was the lack of drinking water, but luckily AJ let us know to bring some, also in addition to the sink inside the kitchenette the only practical washing up solution was the ocean (a thing I personally love), and the lack of light ( I had a camping light with me so again not a problem). In addition in my daydreams I had imagined deeper than 3 feet of water, which sucked a bit (but again I'm not sure where I got that idea from).
These issues was a lack of awareness and preparation on our part, so If you come prepared and with the right mindset this is going to be awesome. We were able to adjust to the difference between imagined and reality with ease and It was a really really cool experience.
If you don't have you own boat (and you are comfortable with 'camping' and water, I can tell you this is an experience you don't want to miss.
AJ & Natalie were very accommodating and available.
Had a great time fishing and diving thanks to AJ's referrals.
Unique experience and the privacy was great.
We enjoyed our stay. Grilling up fresh fish on the boat at sunset was romantic and fun. Kayaking to and from the marina was a good little work out and adds to the uniqueness of this spot. I would recommend this experience for 2 or 3 nights.
There are only a few things that I would suggest could be improved on. Lights did not work, termites and the bathroom was stinky.
I highly recommend staying on this houseboat if you are truly looking for a unique lodging experience. You need to feel good about kayaking and know that this is glamorized car camping. The boat is funky but so fun. Doing yoga on the top deck in the am was great. If anything isn't working, AJ will be right on it. Also, make sure that you let him take you on the Mangrove kayak tour. It is yet another off the beaten path experience that you won't find in many places in the world.
Very good location and AJ is extremely helpful and accommodating. It can be a little windy and cool at night so be prepared with sweatshirts and possibly earplugs if you are a light sleeper as there is a bit of noise from the windows moving/whistling from a strong wind.
If you are looking to camp on the water and be outdoors, this is a great experience for you. I wish I would have been able to do one of AJ's kayaking tours through the mangrove maze. Maybe next time!
Hello, I'm AJ and I'm a traveler that has now settled in Key West. I'm a chef by trade but started kayak wilderness guiding in Alaska in 1999. Moved to KW in 2005. In my travels I have seen and experience some great places, as soon as I arrived in Key West...... it felt like home. I've always dreamed of owning a business doing something I love and Kayak Kings is it! I love to explore and even better I love to show others the great places I have found. So come on and get off the beaten path with Kayak Kings.
Life is good!
