A 100-year-old merchant house (registered cultural property) for one group at a time.
Open the fusuma and three tatami rooms become one. Kids run the corridors; adults watch koi in the garden from the veranda. At night the living room becomes a 100-inch cinema. 1 to 7 guests, 4 tatami rooms, 200 sqm, parking for 3.

An old house: sloping floors, summer insects, paper walls, futons you lay out on tatami. Bath and kitchen fully renovated.

Not a modern hotel, but a chance to live in history.

The space
ABOUT THE HOUSE
Maruki Saifuku is a merchant house built over 100 years ago in the old town of Kakuda, Miyagi. It is registered by the Japanese government as a Tangible Cultural Property, and we rent the whole house to one group per night. Carved ranma transoms, a tokonoma alcove, shoji and fusuma screens and a gold folding screen remain from its days as a prosperous shop.

LAYOUT
- 1st floor: three connected tatami rooms, kitchen-dining, bath, washroom, changing room, toilet
- 2nd floor: one tatami room
- Futons for your whole party are prepared in the bedrooms, and you lay them out yourselves in the two inner rooms on the 1st floor and the room upstairs. The tatami room just inside the entrance can be used as a spare bedroom for larger groups. We cap the number of guests at 7 so that everyone has comfortable space to sleep.
- You can sleep, bathe and use the toilet without going upstairs. The stairs are steep; we recommend the 1st floor for small children and elderly guests.
- One bathroom with a household-size tub with a reheating (oidaki) function - larger groups take turns. The toilet has a washlet bidet seat.

NIGHT: THE TATAMI ROOM BECOMES A CINEMA
A 4K projector and a 100-inch screen in the living room. Log in to your own streaming account. Movies, dinner and conversation indoors are welcome late into the night.

KITCHEN
2-burner gas stove, fridge, microwave, rice cooker, large pot, saucepan, frying pan, knife, cutting board, bowls, dishes, chopsticks and spoons. Local produce is sold at Michi-no-Eki Kakuda, about 5 min by car - great for cooking your own dinner.

AMENITIES
Bath and face towels, bed linens, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrushes, hair dryer, electric kettle / Wi-Fi / air conditioning, fan heaters and electric fans / clothes storage and hangers / spare pillows and blankets.
No pajamas or nightwear are provided.

PARKING
Free parking for 3 vehicles on site. Additional free parking about a 2-minute walk (approx. 100 m) away for 4+ cars - please contact us in advance.

WHAT A 100-YEAR-OLD HOUSE IS LIKE
- Pillars and floors show a century of wear and some slope. Bath and kitchen are fully renovated and cleaned to modern standards.
- Fusuma and shoji are paper screens: you will hear voices from the next room.
- You sleep on futon laid on tatami - firmer than a bed.
- In summer, small insects come in through gaps in the wood and humidity is high. In winter the wooden floors are cold (heating provided).
- Many steps inside; the staircase is steep. Please watch your step at night.

GETTING HERE
- Car: about 50 min from central Sendai, about 40 min from Sendai Airport
- Train: Abukuma Express to Kakuda Station, then taxi about 5 min (or a 20-min walk)
- Public transport is limited; a rental car is recommended.
- If you need a taxi, just send us a message in advance and we will arrange it for you - no phone calls in Japanese needed.

NEARBY
- 1-minute walk: the shop "Marusen" preserves a storehouse (kura) built about 145 years ago. When the shop was rebuilt in 1996, the new building was constructed around the kura to save it, so the storehouse still stands inside the shop. In Japanese folklore a zashiki-warashi is a child spirit that brings good fortune to the house it lives in; three are said to live in this kura. Visitors touch the storehouse and make a wish - locally it is best known for wishes about marriage and children. Viewing requires a purchase at the shop; conditions may change, so please check on the day.
- Walking distance: Kakuda City Folk Museum (former Ujiie residence) and the old shopping street
- About 10 min by car: JAXA Kakuda Space Center and a full-scale H-II rocket model
- About 30 min: Funaoka Castle Park and the Hitome Senbonzakura cherry blossoms (April) / Shiroishi Castle
- About 40 min: Zao Fox Village

Guest access
The whole house is yours, one group per night: four tatami rooms (three on the 1st floor, one on the 2nd), kitchen-dining, bath, washroom, toilet, the veranda, the garden and 3 on-site parking spaces. Please note that a few areas inside the building are closed to guests.

Other things to note
EVENINGS
The house is on an old shopping street with neighbours next door. After 9 pm, please enjoy dinner, movies and conversation indoors. Please refrain from eating, drinking or chatting outdoors or on the veranda after 9 pm, and keep music and voices low.

THE BUILDING
This is a nationally registered cultural property. The fusuma, ranma and other fittings are historic; if they are damaged, we may have to ask you to cover repair costs. As a 100-year-old wooden house it has many steps and a steep staircase - please keep a close eye on small children.

WINTER
Mornings and evenings can be cold inside. Air conditioners and fan heaters are provided, but we recommend bringing thick socks and warm indoor wear.

ACCOMMODATION TAX
The Miyagi Prefecture accommodation tax (JPY 300 per person per night) is included in your Airbnb payment. Nothing to pay on arrival.

CHILDREN
Infants sharing a futon stay free. No cribs or extra beds.

OTHER
- No smoking indoors.
- No extra charge for heating or air conditioning.
- The number of guests cannot be increased after check-in - please book for the exact number staying.

My work: Operation of a Kominka homestay
I spend too much time: Old buildings, local food, movies
This is ODORIBA Co., Ltd.We operate an old traditional house inn and restaurant in the Sennan area of southern Miyagi Prefecture. Preserving historic buildings as homes where people can stay—this is the starting point of our work. The merchant house "MARUKI Saifuku," a nationally registered tangible cultural property, is one of them. This is not a museum for display; it is a home where you can spend the night with your family and friends. In the evening, the tatami mat room becomes a 100-inch movie theater, and in the morning, you can look out at the garden where the carp swim from the veranda. We will always be honest with you before you book about the slopes, sounds, and summer insects that are unique to an old house.Messages are responded to by the person in charge, Shimazaki, within approximately 1 hour.Feel free to ask us about local food and places to see.
