  • We (4 adults) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bob and Lily's Great New House. Bob was waiting for us at the house when we arrived and took the time to explain how to use all the wonderful Japanese appliances/gadgets and handy portable wifi devices. He also provided us with a detailed map of the local area that highlighted restaurants, convenience stores and shops. The house is in immaculate condition (exactly like the pictures) and has all the comforts of home. It's within walking distance of Yamashina station and a quick 5 minute train ride to Kyoto station. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

  • I stayed with Bob and Lily (B&L) about a year ago in their Nara house and had a great time, so when I returned to Japan this winter it was a no-brainer that I wanted to relive the experience. However, when I found out they were booked in Nara, I was disappointed—until they suggested I stay with them at their Kyoto house. I figured "why not?" and gave it a shot.

I'll sum it up for those of you who are too lazy to read the rest of the review: I had a great time. The house is not in downtown Kyoto, but very close, so one of the plus sides is you will get an authentic feel for a quiet Japanese suburbia.

The house is in a great location. It's a 5 minute metro-ride from downtown Kyoto, nestled in a quiet suburb where grannies bike around and kids play baseball in the afternoons. If you want a quiet neighbourhood experience this is a sweet place for it.

The house is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the metro station, and a 1 min walk from the main restaurant street. People do not speak any English around here, so remember to bring the mobile wireless that B&L provide, and to download the (website hidden) translate app (for free) to your phone. Works wonders :)

I basically just chilled in the neighbourhood for a week, eating, biking around, going for day trips into the city. In the evenings I made the most of the Bob's superior home entertainment system by binging on netflix (game of thrones, whaaaaaat) and indulging in random Japanese snacks. If you are planning on partying and going out late into the night, this may not be the best place. However, if you're looking for some R&R, want a quiet bed'n'breakfast, I'd really recommend this place.

FOOD recommendations if you stay here: there's this sweet lunch place up the street that Lily really likes. They primarily serve Udon but they also do set lunches and everything. Cheap. Bowl of noodles is about $6 USD. I am a big fan of home-style Japanese cooking, and like a good hobbit, I ate 2 lunches there, everyday. I know, it's a little excessive, but it was just so good.

Other sweet restaurants: B&L took me to a restaurant that serves deep fried Chicken w/ daikon radish and ponzu sauce. I went back to that restaurant at least twice. Lastly, there is this very small, indistinct, sushi restaurant right from the corner of the water temple thing where you deposit the recycling. I apologize for the crappy directions. However, it's hard to miss. It's like the only sushi place there. I had a healthy serving of uni, salmon, tuna, scallops and a pint of beer for $15USD. Unbelievable. My only regret was not going there at least 4 more times.

Reminder: nobody speaks English, no English menus around this area. Bring a smartphone with a translation app.

  • Bob & Lily were super friendly and helpful! The house was fantastic, in pristine condition and very comfortable; we really experienced the feeling of living in Kyoto. The neighborhood is quaint and friendly, conveniently located with lots to eat for our family of six. We’ve already recommended friends to visit Bob & Lily’s place :)

  • Absolutely amazing hosts who went the extra mile to make our stay incredibly comfortable. Nothing was too much to ask and Bob & Lily provided amazing help with our travel arrangements getting to and from the airport or railway.

The house is new and very comfortable and an easy 5 minute walk to the rail or subway lines and then 5 minutes into downtown Kyoto or direct through lines to Osaka. A supermarket and bottle store are conveniently around the corner and departments stores close by at the rail station. Also a couple of great little restaurants close by if you decide to come home from Kyoto.

Definitely one to consider in close proximity to downtown Kyoto.

  • We arrive at night and Bob was in the house waiting for us. Explained everything and even has coffee, noodles and rice to get us started. Directions to the house was very precise and we never got lost even if we arrived at night. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The 2 mobile wifi comes in handy in touring the kansai area. Bob answered all our queries quickly and we never have a problem. This was a very memorable vacation. Thanks Bob and Lily

  • Bob and Lily were awesome hosts! Super warm and friendly, were nice enough to have dinner with us the first night and give us a little orientation on the city. The place was spacious, looked just like the photos, and all the amenities you could need were provided. The pocket wifis were so useful and they had a bunch of umbrellas for us to use too in the rain! They had instructions for everything and sent us a bunch of useful information for getting around. Thanks so much for a great stay--we really enjoyed our time in Kyoto!

  • It's an amazing place. Felt just like home. Close to everything. With Bob and Lily's attention it totally beats staying at any hotel. We would highly recommend them to any traveler.

  • Bob and Lily were fantastic in making our stay very efficient, enjoyable and time saving. It was more than we had expected. Everything was brand new in the house - my partner and I enjoyed having such a generous space. There was one bathroom but two toilets. Kitchen appliances were all fancy (or maybe that's just the norm in Japan...we ended up purchasing some kitchen appliances to take home because of Bob & Lily's!) and not to mention Bob's programmed remote light switches..very cool. Moving to a hotel seemed like a downgrade :)

Location was very convenient which was the main reason we chose it but rewarded with so many other bonus features! Yamashina is only one JR station away from Kyoto (5 min and very frequent) plus other local lines that gets you to all the typical touristy areas. The house was within few minutes walk to the station.

Bob and Lily provided us with free portable wifi...which was extremely convenient when you're somewhere and need to look up (website hidden) maps etc...two portable devices were provided which was great when my partner and I wanted to do separate things yet needed to contact each other and not use roaming.

Bob & Lily were awesome in replying to any queries we had during our stay. I like using Japan's TA-Q-BIN services for luggage transfers which are usually provided at the hotels but Bob & Lily also assisted us with this through a convenient store around the corner.

There was no TV but we didn't need it because we were mostly out and well connected with whatever through wifi on our phones and iPads.

Definitely great value for where it's at and what is provided. We have already recommended Bob & Lily's to friends...I would love to stay there again with another Japan visit!

    November 2013
  • The house was absolutely fantastic! Everything is brand new and rooms are extremely comfortable! Location is very convenient as it is only a few minutes walk from the train station and the train station is only one stop away from Kyoto Station. Bob is very friendly and he also brought me around the neigbourhood to familiarise myself with the area and the restaurants nearby. He also provided us with 2 portable wifi devices (just in case one runs out of battery during the day...) to help us stay connected at all times! One tiny little thing i would say that is missing from the house though is a TV (hopefully coming soon?). Otherwise perfect score and highly recommended!

Kansai Fixer / Osaka University
Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and the whole Kansai area. We have always been travelers. Find out more at Kansai Fixer (kansaifixer). There are so many more places we would like to see, but we abhor tour groups and try to avoid traveling well worn touristy paths. It has always been our desire to "live it like a local" anywhere we go. Lily first came to Japan from Shanghai, China in 1999. She has lived and worked throughout Osaka and Kyoto. When not showing visitors around Kansai, she can often be found on the studio floor dancing Salsa or sweating it out to Bikram Yoga. Hailing from Colorado, Bob started out in Japan in 1994 as an English language instructor in Kurashiki for six years. Following a four year stay in Canberra, Australia, he came back to Japan in 2003 and has been a university lecturer in Kansai ever since. A nihonshu (sake) aficionado and dedicated restaurant hunter, he is most often criticized for over-ordering everything and badgering friends on which train car to take. We began our lives together in 2006 with Lily taking us to a brilliant little cafe in the heart of downtown Osaka. On our second date, Bob insisted we take a day long trip down the coast to Kurashiki, Okayama. Quickly realizing that we both shared a passion for food and travel, we have been together ever since.
