This is a quite unique home. Built 12 years ago by two widows the home was built with 2 master suites, plus 2 additional bedrooms. Since the home was built in the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood the exterior design had to meet historic regulations, thus the home appears to be early 20th century Queen Anne architecture, but once inside you walk into all the modern style and features of homes built in the last couple of years.
Since buying the property 2 years ago we have made extensive changes to the interior to accommodate our love of modern/hi-tech furniture and fixtures. Each room is complimented with its own unique lighting fixtures and modern furnishing. A theater room and spa were added to reflect our lifestyle, a wine-bar adjoins the theater room opening onto a covered patio which is wired for surround sound along with the spa.
Wireless internet is available to all guests as well as use of the majority of the common areas of the home, including the theater room (which has a huge library of movies), the spa, outdoor spaces, living room, dining room and kitchen areas.
The Sherman Hill location is just 3 blocks from the downtown area and is only a half block from Methodist/Blank Children's Hospitals. Because of the work of the neighborhood association, Sherman Hill is like living in a small town right in the middle of a large city. A very family friendly area with plenty of street parking. This home has been featured on the annual walking tour of homes and is always a great hit with the spectators.

Guest have access to all common areas of the home including kitchen/dining area, living room, theater room, spa, and all outdoor spaces.

  • Our stay with Dat and Alan was extremely enjoyable. They were very gracious and the home is wonderful. They are a great team when it comes to design ideas and implementation. We walked to the local Orange Leaf Yogurt shop, then downtown where we and enjoyed the Pappajohn Sculpture garden in the evening. Bed was very comfortable and the room cozy. I had mentioned to Dat that we were taking a short road trip to celebrate our anniversary, and he had a lovely treat of fresh fruit and chocolates waiting in our room. And yes, there were bath towel swans on the bed! We would highly recommend them to other singles or couples.

  • Dat and Alan were gracious hosts. They have a booklet of recommended places to eat including maps, all within walking distance. Sherman Hill area of Des Moines is rich with history and a close walk to downtown...but you have to return to the top of the Hill :) Photos accurately represent the accommodations. Will definitely consider a return stay when visiting family and friends in town.

  • So welcoming and a great bed. Invited to have breakfast, but had to get going. Grabbed an apple and tea from Dat. Alan met me in the early afternoon, joined me in the lovely sun room while I ate my lunch and really helped me with directions around Des Moines. Thank you both!!! Hope we meet again.

  • Alan and Dat are truly two of the most hospitable people I have ever met. They both go above and beyond to make their guests feel welcome. We had a fantastic time staying with them and getting to know them. They're both very cultured and interesting characters who can chat you up about pretty much anything you can imagine. And their home is phenomenal. To be honest, I was overwhelmed by the description of their place and being the skeptic that I am I could not imagine what a home with a spa and theatre would look like. It will exceed your expectations!

  • A great place to stay. I reserved the room at 2pm and checked in at 3pm. I agree with the other comments shared and would add that the room is quiet and private. The first door to the room is solid wood. To my immediate right is the bathroom with it's own door. After the bathroom there is a pocket door that gives further privacy.

While one of the pictures does mention it, I'd also note the heated floor in the bathroom! The room also has it's own thermostat.

    Highly Recommended!!

  • I recently stayed with Dat & Alan for a few weeks. The house is wonderful, the location is even better, but what truly makes this house special are the folks inside of it. On arrival Dat & Alan had my bed prepared, the towels fresh, bathroom spotless and they continued with this excellence throughout my entire stay. I HIGHLY recommend you stay with Dat & Alan if you are looking for a place in Des Moines for a night or two. My experience was wonderful!

  • Alan and Dat are awesome hosts.

Accomodations are clean, neat and the bed is spectacularly comfortable. I would highly recommend staying here if you're in Des Moines. The location is perfect, a safe walkable neighborhood close to downtown. I literally walked to work (my new job, I"m in transition) walked to dinner, walked to Gateway Market (probably the finest in Des Moines or anywhere in Iowa).

There's also a neighborhood pub, asian food and pizza just a couple blocks away.

  • Dat and Alan were excellent hosts. This was my first airbnb experience and it was great. Their place is nicely decorated and looks exactly like the pictures. They have the best amenities and my guest and I enjoyed them all. Including the private hot tub, theater room, kitchen, etc. The room was very nice with available storage drawers, quality sheets, bedding and towels.

Location wise it was easy to access. I cant say much because I had a car, so getting around all around the area was easy.

Dat and Alan had great and prompt communication from my initial inquiry through my entire stay. My guest had lived in des moines before so she knew her way around, however if I did have questions Dat and Alan were available to answer them or share knowledge.

They were generous to offer us food and things to eat for breakfast. Overall they are very friendly and accommodating. And wanted to make sure we had a good experience. I would stay there again.

  • Dat and Alan were the most helpful hosts I've met. I booked the place at the very last minute, and they not only responded almost immediately, but also offered me a ride from the airport. The house was amazing, and they were so friendly I only wish I'd had a chance to chat with them more.

  • We had a great time at Dat and Alan's place. The whole house and the guest room are bright, spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Additionally, getting to the downtown area of Des Moines is easy and fast from their place. It was truely a pleasure staying with them :) Adam & Verena
