East Richmond Heights is an undiscovered part of the Bay Area. It is tree lined, quiet, and friendly. It feels like a little Yosemite.
You are a walk or bike ride to WildCat Canyon Park for great hikes and picnics, a 5 mile walk or bike ride to Tilden Park, Berkeley, where there is a petting zoo, merry-go-round, steam train and hiking.
Craneway Pavilion is about 15 minutes away, a place for events like Pema Chodron, quilt shows, etc. Also the site for the WWII Rosie The Riveter Museum. All in an old auto plant, wonderful architecture and on the Bay.
There is an AC Transit bus to Berkeley, a BART station is about a 10 minute drive from here, but like most of the Bay Area, and you'll need a car unless you are an avid bicyclist.
We can be available for some pick up and drop offs, and again a car is needed.
Other Things to Note
Yes, we do have a dog. ;) and sometimes a cat.
So there is East Richmond Heights, Point Richmond, Richmond Annex and Richmond. We are in the most beautiful of the 4, which is East Richmond Heights. Point Richmond is a very interesting and cute village, on the Bay. Richmond Annex has the Pacfic East Mall where there are lots of Asian Restaurants, stores and a great place for a foot/body massage at a great price. Richmond has the wonderful Craneway Pavillion, hosting events like the SF Symphony and Pema Chrodon. Ellen and Henry, the dog, were great hosts! We were instant friends. And want an amazing place this is! Ellen's Light Retreat, her home, gardens, and neighborhood are absolutely wonderful.
Ellen's home is lovely, full of personal touches, that make you feel comfortable and welcomed immediately-- and there are dog beds everywhere for canine companions! The yard is truly beautiful with rose bushes and other incredible plants on a gorgeous hill. It's a perfect spot for relaxing after a day in the city.
There is hiking near by and anything you might need moments away.
I really cannot say enough about how much my dog and I enjoyed staying here.
This has become "home away from home" when I travel to the east side of SF Bay area. Ellen, once again, was kind, helpful and thorough in making us comfortable and content. I especially appreciate her ability to be warm and friendly and to know when to allow space, quiet and privacy after long days of work intensity. What a host! And what can I say about Henry? He could turn me from a cat lover to a canine cuddler. I'll be back!
Our very first stay at an airbnb couldn't have been more delightful. Ellen met us at the garden gate of her charming house and property. Henry, her well trained and friendly chocolate English Lab, was happy to greet us too. Though not hard to get to, the neighborhood is on a secluded street next to a large park, great for walking and exploring. It was so quiet it was hard to imagine we were on the doorstep of a large urban area. It was also very convenient for our trips to Berkeley, Oakland, and Sacaramento. The Bart would have taken us right into central San Francisco if we were going there. The room and bathroom were bright and nicely appointed though small. This was no problem since we could also use the rest of the living area in the house. Ellen generously provided a simple breakfast and interesting conversation when she was around but privacy too as she was busy with her own life much of the time.
This stay was as comfortable, warm yet professional as was my prior time with Ellen this past spring. Her treehouse-like house is clean, welcoming, quiet, and oh-so perfect for me. I especially appreciated Ellen's willingness to provide the individual elements that I need whenever possible, as well as the meaningful conversation. Great tea and coffee, lots of privacy yet friendly companionship with Ellen, Henry (the dog), or both made for a memorable stay. I'll be back!
Ellen is a charming and gracious host. The room is just as pictured and described. When my plans got delayed she was able to extend our stay. Moreover she was able to accommodate both me and (for a reasonable cleaning fee) the cats, so I did not have to put them in boarding for a week.
Although I was actually moving back (so I already knew the area) it's clear that Ellen knows the area well and can help direct her visitors to all the wonderful things the Bay Area has to do and see.
Ellen was a wonderful host. Her photos more than accurately portray the peace you'll experience being in her home. Anyone even remotely offset about her dog shouldn't be- he's extremely gentle, playful and makes the experience that much more enjoyable.
This location more than justifies the drive to the city, if that's your goal and if it's not has several amazing hikes all within close range of the house with stunning views all the way toward SF and the water. Bring yourself a great book, paint, sketch pad or what have you and be at home here.
My only qualm in the whole experience was saying good bye. Anyone fortunate enough to rest in this home will also gain two new friends along the way. If you don't get much to do at all while you're in town at least get to know Ellen. She has an amazing spirit and a warm heart that will make the trip all the more a success.
If ever I want to revisit SF again I will surely rest here.
We had a very pleasant stay at Ellen's house. Ellen made us feel like we were home for our first visit to California. I would recommend her place to anyone.
Merci Ellen pour ton accueil à ta demeure. Nous n'oublierons pas ton humanité et ta bonne humeur.

I am the very proud host of Ellen's GuestHouse, Richmond, CA as you can see on FB: (website hidden)(phone number hidden)
Originally from the Chicago area, I transplanted to the Bay Area over 30 years ago and learned my way around as a visitor.
As an avid traveler, I love staying where I get a sense of local flavor. At the end of a day of touring, the place I come back to needs to feel like, "Ah, things are calm and restful here. I can rest up here for another day out and about tomorrow." My home offers this respite. I love providing an aesthetically pleasing environment, that offers friendliness and calm.
I have had very satisfied guests from all over the world, Belgium, Washington DC, Wisconsin, Beijing, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Spain, Denmark, France, Russia, Australia, Germany, Cape Cod, Maryland, California, etc., and my place has been used for several photo shoots for books and online boutiques.
I speak some Spanish and get really clever using the computer to understand other languages.
I am happy to be helpful.
Some of my favorite visits have been to Calistoga in CA, Kauai, Galicia Spain, Soan River in France, Denmark, Paris, London, a small restaurant right here in San Fran on Claude and another in Port Costa, The Bull Valley Roadhouse. What makes these great visits are the people I find there, the atmosphere and the food. I stay in Airbnbs, hostels, upscale hotels, spas, friends homes, canal boats. I do what I need to get the best flavor of the culture I am living in. This is my reason for travel, to live in other peoples' shoes. It is also my reason for hosting, I get to know people from a different perspective.
I have a favorite quote: "What else is life for than to make other peoples' lives a bit easier." This is what I use as my compass for living.
