Really nice place for a young couple to stay. We've been there during semana santa.
first no one showed up because the housekeeper didn't hear us bumping on the door. The place is not signed nor there is a name on the house. We waited nearly an hour an contacted amelie. After that the housekeeper showed up.
its located in the forest aproxx 300 meters from the beach. private parking space is inside the area of the house. due to our lack of the spanish language we had some understanding problems with the housekeeper. English is not that common in CR ;) Bring your dictionary and learn some spanish phrases.
We had fresh water melon, pinapple and mangos in the house. Theres a big fridge in the kitchen. really nice! The nights can get a bit noisy, because you are kind a in the forest. you might hear really interresting animal sounds;) but do not be afraid!!! you might not need air condotion because there are two big mobile fans u can use.
overall a very safe and nice place to stay. amelie did always wrote us back on the chat if we needed something. internet is a little slow if it even works on holidays.
We had a wonderful, comfortable stay in Amelie's apartment. It was my husband and I plus another couple. The only con for some may be the lack of bathroom door; it is just a curtain. We honestly didn't care, but others may have a problem with it. The apartment is quite small so make sure your travel companions are close friends; if they aren't, they will be after the trip :) The WI FI came and went, but the problem was being addressed. Again, we are pretty laid back so it wasn't a big deal, but others may find this problematic. Plenty of restaurants and bars offer free wifi so unless you spend all of your time at the apartment you can still find decent connectivity.
The beach access is great! You receive a key to a gate, gaining entrance to a short path that leads to the beach, only a two minute walk away. We were always the only ones there, minus the occasional jogger or dog. It was heaven! If you want to be around people the Banana Azul beach club is a short walk down the beach, but it is pretty sedate. Mostly people relaxing and reading.
More lively crowds are easily accessible from the property. We spent a few nights at The Point, located a ten minute walk away at the highway/gravel road junction. The prices were reasonable and the food is delicious. Walking to Puerto Viejo is kind of a hike, especially during the day, but we had cabs called and they were quick and cheap (about $4). We were advised as tourists to not walk at night. Although we never once felt unsafe. Just be smart and don't do anything you wouldn't do at home. Petty crime occurs everywhere. Don't fool yourself.
Overall, the apartment was a great location for our needs. The care taking staff was very friendly and met all our needs despite the considerable language barrier on both of our ends. We will definitely stay in one of Amelie's properties again!
We were three friends staying at Amelie's apartment in Puerto Viejo (Playa Negra).
Thanks to gps coordinates, the apartment was easy to find and in a lovely location only meters from the beach. The apartment is located on the same property as a rental house and that of the caretaker. The property is walled and access is via a gate. This was great, as the property was private and we felt very secure. We were greeted by the caretaker, with whom we had basic communication as our Spanish is not so good. This did not present any concern and Jose kindly showed us everything and explained slowly as best he could. He also left us a lovely welcome with candles at our doorstep the first night.
In terms of the apartment, we thought it best to leave our comments, both positive and negative:
Well equipped with all the basic essentials (mineral water, soaps, toilet paper, coffee, cooking essentials, towels etc)
Big welcome bowl of fresh fruit
Big, powerful fans for the warm days and no need to use aircon
On the second day of our stay, Jose came and tidied the apartment
Easy contact with Amelie
No bathroom door, only a curtain which was a little difficult at times in terms of privacy and going to the toilet
Beds are quite small and mattress on single bed has died
WiFi connection very unreliable and went to a cafe in Puerto Viejo when needing to connect
We probably wouldn't choose to stay here again but in terms of value for money and location, the apartment is a good option. It might also suit a family more than a group of friends, especially in terms of the lack of bathroom door.

Originally from France I have been living in Costa Rica since 2010.
I came across this area while traveling and I ended up staying here...
I love this place so much for its laid back atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. I very much enjoy sharing tips and recommendations about things to do and places to visit as well as my favorites restaurants!
I am also the owner of Caribe Horse riding club, a well known horse stable in the area.
