Welcome to our cozy haven in the city. We would love for you to make yourself at home in our renovated basement apartment. It’s located in our 100 year old Capitol Hill row house and is just steps away from the Potomac Avenue Metro Station. The 1 bedroom apartment is perfect for a weekend getaway or a week-long business trip. But you would never need to leave! We live right upstairs, so if there is anything you need, just let us know.
Hope to see you soon!
We provide linens and towels, as well as free advice about what’s best to see in DC.
If you decide to venture out into the city, you can leave your car here. Parking is on-street and ample. (Longer term- off street parking can be arranged for an additional fee.) You can see the Metro station from our front steps and several bus lines run just half a block away. We've filled the bookshelf with several guides to DC. If you have any questions, we've definitely got answers.
The full kitchen includes a dishwasher, oven, granite counter tops, coffee maker and microwave, etc. Also included is basic service for 4, pots/pans and cooking utensils. We’ve stocked the fridge and cabinets with some basics – coffee, snacks, drinks, etc. And if you're hungry for something we don't have stocked, the grocery store is at the end of our street.
The full bathroom includes standing shower and washer/dryer. There is a spare hair dryer in case you've forgotten yours. We’ve put some detergent and dryer sheets in the bathroom in case you need to do a load of laundry during your stay.
Bedroom has a full bed, dresser, nightstand, bookshelf and a closet. There’s also an ironing board and iron in the closet. Outside the bedroom is a granite topped desk/office station that is perfect for a business traveler. The apartment has cable TV and wireless internet… and ever important for those Washington, DC summers… Central A/C!
Rear patio is furnished and has a grill. Several restaurants and bars just a block or 2 away. It’s just a short walk to Eastern Market and Barracks Row shops and restaurants.
No smoking, please!
Helen and Gabe were very welcoming and helpful. I was very busy during my stay, thus making it so comfortable to come home to warm and heated apartment.
Helen and Gabe were super-welcoming without being invasive. They made sure we had everything we needed and we as comfortable as possible. They were easily accessible throughout our stay. The apartment is exactly how it looks in the pictures--clean and spacious, with a very convenient location. There's a grocery store and bar right around the corner, as well as a sleew of restaurants within 15 minutes walking distance. The area is clean and great for walking around. My ONLY issue was a safety one--there's only a glass-pane door between you and the outside world. While the door locks and doesn't face out into the street, it wouldn't take much for someone to creep around back and break through the glass. If I had been staying here alone, it would have been a serious issue for me. Nothing happened, of course, but it could be more secure. Overall, I would definitely stay here again!
Our visit and stay was really great. Helen and Gabe were very friendly and checked on us multiple times to make sure everything was going well. It was a very cozy apartment and located very close to the metro and was only 10-15 minutes away from all the big D.C. sights. This was a very pleasant experience overall.
Our stay was awesome. The hosts were great at giving us good direction and very responsive when needed. This was our first air B&b stay and we will definitely use again. I found the location relative to the metro exceptionally helpful.
We are entirely satisfied with the attention we received from Gabe and Helen, and with the accommodation itself, which was just as advertised and a good value.
After this first airbnb experience I doubt I'll find a more enthusiastic, helpful, responsive hostess than Helen. I loved my two week stay in their wonderful apartment. It is exactly as pictured and beyond what is described. The shower/hot water is wonderful. The washer/dryer was convenient for my longer stay. As mentioned by other reviewers, the location is ideal for exploring D.C. since it's a block to the metro and bus stops. The cross street is Pennsylvania Ave and taxis are easy to hail yet I never heard street noise. Harris Teeter (similar to Trader Joe's) is around the corner for groceries. The neighborhood appears to be undergoing gentrification and there is some construction noise, but it ends by 5pm. I've heard more annoying noise in expensive hotels from boisterous guests and loud TV's. I was concerned about warmth and Helen had a space heater waiting, but I never needed it. Helen graciously waited up for my late arrival, helped with luggage, and had me settled within minutes. After a long flight (with only peanuts offered) being able to heat soup that was in the cupboard was very, very appreciated. Helen was immediately responsive, gave a perfect amount of privacy, and I felt like I was in my own little world. Best of luck to you Helen and Gabe.
I really enjoyed my stay in Helen and Gabe's basement apartment. It had everything I could want and Helen was the perfect host keeping in close touch but in an unobtrusive way. When an unexpected maintenance issue came up she couldn't have been more thoughtful and considerate.
Besides being a comfortable and private space, the apartment was well appointed. It's finest asset is its location. A two minute stroll to the Metro Station and a very pleasant 30 minute walk to Capitol Hill. Lots of great restaurants, pubs and other cool stores all within walking distance with none closer than the very nice Harris and Teeter supermarket around the corner.
Only caution is the extensive reconstruction/renovation going on in the house next door and another across the street with the to-be-expected noise associated with sledge hammers and power tools. So don't expect to sleep in late during the week :)
Hello... We're Helen and Gabe. We've taken over our friends' house on Capitol Hill and have taken over operating the AirBnB in the basement apartment to go with it! The basement apartment is a great place to stay if you're in town for a few days of business or if you're here to sightsee.
We ask that you treat the apartment as if it were your own... and please make yourself at home!
