CR is family run, 3 double rooms and an 8-bed dorm.
We thank you for your interest and hope to meet in the near future
Cedar Ridge is a home. It works well for families, writers, travelers on their own, women traveling on their own, first time visitors to Jamaica.
Guests have access to all of the house, the kitchen is shared and meals can be provided by the housekeeper, if ordered in advance. Laundry is also courtesy of the housekeeper by arrangement.
Interaction with Guests
Guests become a part of the family if they wish to or they can remain very private. The family who live at Cedar Ridge are straight talking creative innovators, very eclectic in their lifestyle, they are knowledgeable about the island and things to do.
Cedar Ridge Lodge is located on a hillside about ten minutes from the centre of the town. It is a quiet cul-de-sac (dead end) with only four houses. There is a community at the top of the hill and another at the bottom and all around in the hills there are small homes.
Route taxis run on the hill and there is a listing of four or five taxis associated with Cedar Ridge.
Cedar Ridge offers an airport pick up for almost half the price of the standard airport services. Make sure to email or call and choose this arrangement.
Other Things to Note
The family at Cedar Ridge have a wealth of knowledge about where to go and what to do, so make sure to check with them about your onward bookings and your tours.
Only residents allowed as guests in the hostel rooms. All other guests are welcome by appointment or pre-arrangements. When you get here, we will let you know...
No smoking in sleeping areas.
No external pets are allowed.
The house is very isolated and hard to access, you are reliant on either a long walk to the main road and public transport or taxis which are at least US prices. Arlene has a driver that she recommends, he is lovely but we waited at least 30 mins every time we used him, on a short trip this wasn't ideal. He was also late to pick us up from the airport. His rates I have since found out are on the high end. Arlene was very friendly but not very helpful. She wasn't around our first day and seemed bothered when we asked for suggestions. The house is beautiful but very run down and in need of a good clean. The centre courtyard design also makes it very noisy. Finally there is a mosquito problem and no screens on the windows. Overall I would only recommend this as a transit spot, the biggest issue is access given the remote location. On the upside the location is high on the hill and there is a spectacular view.
Greetings Chiara, Thank you so much for taking the time to note your observations.
We always like to have our travelers share their views and perspectives. It is really unfortunate that you lost your I-pad on arrival and so arrived at Cedar Ridge in a state of confusion and discontent. The general rule of "experienced travelers" is that, when one travels into the lives of the community one expects to experience the vibration of the people and come away with an understanding that one is participating in that experience, not judging it based on an objective standard. It is true that the driver was late, he stopped to assist with a breakdown, it is also true that I was not at the Hostel to greet you, however, I was out showing some of our other guests around, and there were many other persons who - reportedly did a good job of orientating you and ensuring that you had an understanding of the correct information and contacts to ensure your safety and convenience while traveling around Montego Bay.
It is unfortunate too, that you left with the impression that you were a bother, my strongest feature is guiding visitors to all the wonderful places in the area, I love doing this! why on earth would you have sensed a botheration?
The house...well, again while it may be old and frayed, its atmospheric and has an unmatched vibration of joy and fun for visitors, and for the price. It is just not true that our house is not clean - faded paint is not dirt.
Well, again, its a shame you found nothing positive to say and our vibration a disturbance and that clearly you were never able to relax again after your traumatic experience enough to enjoy the space, the people, the company of the other guests as you were in your room most of the time.
Cedar Ridge is on a ridge and just far enough out of town to give our travelers the peace and calm of the hills while still in fairly close proximity to the City, its such a shame that you were here such a short time and were not able to benefit from the community vibrations. Perhaps next time.
We hope that the rest of your holiday lived up to your expectations and that you were able to relax and feel the love of the people and establish an understanding of the principle of One Love.
Cedar Ridge is exactly like mentioned in the listing. Nice neat place with an awesome view. The host Arlene has a reservoir of information with respect to the country. She's great with communication both face to face and over the mail. Would definitely recommend the place and Arlene to anyone visiting the area. The place was my first introduction to Jamaica and I must say - Yea Mon! Jamaica awesome mon! Would definitely love to be back for a longer duration the next time around.
Arlene was just as advertised, an amazing host with a ton of helpful trip advice for every need or concern. The house had a gorgeous view and was very nicely kept. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to experience more of the real Jamaica. Perhaps the main downside was that transportation could be tricky depending on when you are traveling. Since the house is located in a residential area, it can be hard to find a route taxi at certain hours, though it is probably possible to charter a taxi at a much higher cost. It's not too big of a deal if you're prepared. Otherwise, Arlene and company were great hosts and very helpful throughout the trip. Thanks!
Greetings Bo, thanks so much for your great review, its a shame you were not able to spend longer with us, when persons spend a longer time they get to build their own relationships with drivers on the hill and getting transport is a little easier.
It was a pleasure to host you I certainly hope that even though short your trip was informative, exciting and full of new experiences. We look forward to your return in future years.
The house was really great, clean and safe! It was a nice experience to stay there! The stunning views over MB and the ocean. Arlene is the best, thanks! Highly recommended !
Cedar Ridge is a location and it is also an experience.
Be prepared to meet people from all corners of the world.
Arlene is a fountain of information. My sense is that she knows the island intimately and can make recommendations about where to go (depending on what your goals are), where to stay (when not at her place) and how to get there.
During my stay I witnessed Arlene interacting with people from all over the word. She did so in a cheerful, courteous and patient manner. She appears to truly enjoy sharing her home with others.
Her residence is a unique blend of outdoor and indoor space. Artists will feel welcome at Cedar Ridge because Arlene's home is filled with art. Being an artist myself, I loved that aspect.
As a single female traveler I was confident in making a choice to stay at Cedar Ridge. The house is located on a spectacularly high hill, that overlooks Montego Bay and affords travelers an unparalleled view of the harbour. The bay itself is ever-changing and I enjoyed photographing it often. Quite visually inspiring.
Location is somewhat off the beaten path. Some people might find this a draw back. Personally, it was refreshing to be away from the hustle and bustle. Line taxis are the easiest way to get around and a taxi can also be ordered specifically for people wishing to go into town. There is usually others who are willing to split the cost. Downtown amenities are about 10 minutes drive. There is also a plaza within walking distance (if your legs are strong and healthy). Fortunately, it is, in part, a downhill jaunt. I did it and I am, let us say... not a "spring chicken".
Longer excursions can be undertaken from Cedar Ridge. People who arrive at the same time often bond and then travel outward and onward together.
What can I say. Paridice.
I will be back.....i, i.
Greetings to everyone at Cedar Ridge
What can I say about this guest Suzanne, it was a perfect match to have her stay with us. She made herself comfortable and useful and just relaxed into life in Jamaica. She was not afraid to explore the country or the people, she traveled freely on her own and also with new friends made at the hostel. We look forward to having Suzanne come back and to be a part of the Cedar Ridge family.
One Love and many thanks for a perfect match!
The house is beautiful with a great big terrace overlooking Montego Bay and the sea... And Arlene was most helpful with everything. Don't plan anything, just reach Cedar Ridge!

Cedar Ridge is a family home converted into a hostel, (everyone grown up and moved away so now we have space!). The house nevertheless, if always full of young people passing through and sharing their lives, experiences and perspectives with guests - its usually quiet, but never a dull moment.
My son started the hostel as a way to assist with expenses for the house. We have a lot of fun with guests as we have lots of information about touring the island, lots of networks to connect folks to and there are almost always events to recommend. You host, Arlene is Jamaican with lots of international experiences, the community is a quiet cul de sac with only a few houses on a hillside not far out of town. The culture is Rastafari, Vegan and artsy, we look forward to sharing.
We are bringing on stream cottages at the Rastafari Indigenous Village, they are not up officially as yet but we are managing three of them for a trial period. So if you are specifically interested in natural, outdoorsey, rustic and completely ITAL. Please ask
