Lovely 2+bedroom home with artistic touches and Mexican Charm in an authentic neighborhood with open markets Monday and Saturday, with butcher shops, chicken store, tortilla shop, etc. etc. Shop the way Mexicans shop, by having your favorite local specialized 'tiendas'.
A short bus or taxi ride into Centro takes you to the shops carrying the imported cheeses, homemade artisan breads, great and well-priced wine shops, etc. But have the fun of buying your fruits and vegetables in the open air Monday market in your own neighborhood, with all the locals!
Upon your arrival, you'll find fruit, breakfast or snack foods, coffee and tea waiting for you. Let me know any food restrictions or favorites for breakfast, and we'll do our best to please.

The furnishings are meant for a casual feeling with a hint of Mexican charm and elegance. Keeping in mind that we are in Mexico...and I aim for comfort and cleanliness over sophistication. We ask our guests to be gentle and keep our furniture clean. There will be a weekly cleaner to help with the basics and change beds, and a weekly gardener to help with the patios, plants, etc. You pay the cleaner $60 pesos an hour, which is only $4 usd.
The kitchen is equipped with microwave oven, coffee maker, blender, toaster, Whirlpool gas range, dishwasher, side by side refer/freezer, pantry, good cabinetry, skylights, ceiling fan, and everything you need for good cooking and dining.
The adjoining dining room is also good for an office if you don't want a dining room. The living room has a gas fireplace, and big walls of windows looking onto the front and back courtyard or patio areas. There is a powder room off the entrance.
The master BR has a lovely large walk-in closet with skylights, and built-in cabinetry, another gas fireplace, ceiling fan, beamed ceiling. The adjoining bathroom has an ergonomic tub with shower over, lovely large window, bidet, skylights, pretty Mexican tiles, and is a Jack and Jill bathroom, meaning that there is a door to the second bedroom.
The second bedroom has a wall of built-in closets, drawers and shelving, and a private entrance onto the courtyard garden. It also has a brick dome ceiling with cupola...this is called a boveda ceiling.
Leave the dining room and you are in a garden, outside patio area...walk up the stairs and you will be on a beautiful tiled terrace with a covered area, an outside sink, and another room which could be used as bedroom, office, art studio, meditation or yoga room? This room has shelving, but is otherwise unfurnished. If you rent for 6 or more months it is possible we will furnish it to meet your needs.
There are potted plants, an outside table and chairs, and a beautiful view of the city skyline, including the Parroquia, which is one mile or so away.
We are a mile from Centro Historico. The bus is half a block away and takes only about 7 minutes to get you into the center of town. If you are a swift walker, it is basically level and takes 15 to 20 mins. I need 25-30, but I am old and have foot problems.
If you need more space/privacy, the one bedroom apartment on the same level is is often available. You can see the pictures here on airbnb and it is number 52459.
This is a 3 casita compound, with a shared laundry room with washer. The rooftop terrace and front and back patios are yours alone. You enter from the street through a shared door and walkway. We're used to a nice community feeling, with total respect for everyone's privacy.
This would be a great place for a mature family or group of friends to share for a reasonable price.
We supply the laundry soap for sheets and towels, when your rental includes a cleaner, (longer term rentals get special rates, but pay their own cleaning bill). Guests who want to wash their clothing are asked to purchase their own laundry products after the first week. Each home has exclusive use of their own outdoor space, it will be made clear when you get here. With this home, you have the lion's share of outdoor space, as it is the main house. The entire rooftop terrace is yours alone, as well as front and back garden areas.
Interaction with Guests
Sometimes I travel, but if I am here, I offer to do a walk about town to help get you oriented. You will have my email address and phone numbers. When I am away, I will have someone meet you at the house to show you in and get you orientated. There will be snacks and breakfast foods already there for you so you do not have to find everything your first day here!
This is a real down to earth Mexican neighborhood. It is not high-end, gated, nor 'gringo' oriented. It is fun if you want the real Mexican experience. The neighbors will love to try to talk to you if you want to. And the local businesses are delighted to tend to your shopping needs. There is a playground and basketball court abt. 2 blocks away. Our neighborhood has Monday and Saturday outdoor markets (mercados) where the prices are terrific, The food very fresh, and the locals welcome you to join them in buying all your weekly produce. There are hamburger, pizza, raw chicken, raw beef and pork stores, and cooked pork places if you enjoy the real Mexican foods!
There are nearby small tiendas or grocery stores that carry beer, milk, Mexican cheeses, breads, etc.
You can get wonderful meals delivered to your door from Chinese, Italian and other restaurants around town.
You are about one flat mile to the corner of Hidalgo and Calz. de La Luz, which is the beginning of Centro Historico. The main thoroughfare to this colonia has just been paved, with a wide walkway on one side of the street...so walking is most likely faster than I estimated here, and certainly, it is much more comfortable than the cobbles that were our walking surface before!
The people in the neighborhood will reflect your friendly behavior, and will love to do business with you. One tenant bought an avocado in a local store, and the proprietor insisted she take some homemade salsa home too. Free, of course. The local pizza restaurant took great pride in showing this same couple, his home- built pizza oven, and building them a custom- made pizza that they loved! It is a great neighborhood to practice your Spanish, but if you have to use body language and gestures, that's good too. Bring your sense of humor with you.
While we are not in the center of activity,... it is easy and quick to get there. (And therefore a much more peaceful, quiet location), The bus costs 5 pesos, a taxi is about 35-40 pesos. We are a 7 minute ride to the center, or a 30 minute flat walk. The bus stop is half a block away.
In town, it is fun to walk all over, but when you get tired, a taxi is always there, and a bus is never far away, up until about 9 or 9:30 pm. There are numerous drivers and tour operators to take you to hot springs, horseback riding, nearby historic cities, etc.
Language and art classes abound! Galleries and restaurants are plentiful. Music is an enormous part of life here, and theater, etc.
Nearby excursions might take you to a water park, hot spring pools/spas and many nearby villages. First class buses are at the 'centro de autobuses', and you can go to Mexico City (4 hrs) or Queretaro (1+ hrs) , Guanajuato (1.+ hrs, not 1st class), even to the coast or other longer trips can be arranged. Many visit Leon, which is nearby and is the leather capital of all of Mexico.
Other Things to Note
Understanding my "rental philosophy": I love to travel. I want to stay in pretty, clean, comfortable, convenient- to- public -transportation, and friendly places that are also affordable. With this in mind, I offer all of my 4 rentals at less than most who are offering comparable rentals here in San Miguel. I charge less for a beautiful, whole house or apartment, than most people charge for a room in their house without kitchen privleges. I offer the kind of property that I would appreciate when traveling. A home not built to be abused, but to be treasured. An environment that is kept clean and fresh, and smoke free. This house was built with care and love. Privacy, yes, but not isolation, almost always having other people living in the complex to meet. A bit out of town, yes...but that allows me to offer it for less, and still provide all the bells and whistles to my guests.
I want people who will appreciate and continue to care for the house and all that is in it. People who will care for the other residents, and be easy, kind neighbors.
It would be greatly appreciated if you would keep an eye on the modestly sized garden spaces and planters, and shoot some water at them if they need it...my gardener will be there once a week, as will the cleaner, but sometimes it is too dry here, and they need more water. And if you do not want to, or cannot, and see that they need it, will you please call or email me so I can provide additional care.
Using PayPal or deposit to my bank, I collect a security deposit directly from you in advance of your arrival. $300 is my standard, short term deposit, $500 is the long term deposit. If you ask to bring a pet, and if I agree in email, the deposit will be higher. No airbnb security deposit will be collected.
If you wish to stay for more than a month, it is possible only after an initial reservation through airbnb has been scheduled.
All of these details will be discussed and written in email so that all parties understand and agree beforehand.
The rules here in airbnb still apply, unless changes are made and agreed to in writing.
There is a 4 day minimum stay. Our 'Welcome Package" is described here: We supply you with enough paper supplies and plastic trash liners for at least the first 4-7 days, so you won't have to shop immediately. We do not offer hotel services, nor do we charge hotel prices, so understand that's why guests do some shopping if they stay here long enough to use up our generous starter package.
Check in between 3pm-10 pm, if possible. Check out is 10 am. Sometimes these times are flexible, by special arrangement in writing/email. If I don't have another guest coming early in the day, I'm very happy to be flexible about check out.
Smoking is allowed outside only. No pets that have not been specifically agreed to in writing (email) by me. Peaceful respect to
This is a compound of 3 habitations, and we care about each one of our guests, so it's important you like and respect others.
Conservative use of the utilities, please. Use laundry machines only from 9-9, use my laundry products for the first week only, please supply your own products. No electric heaters/ blankets are allowed. Thank you!
Sharyn was very welcoming upon our arrival and even dropped us off in town after showing us around the neighborhood. She also contacted us a few times during our stay to check on us. She was also easy to reach anytime we had questions.
The casa, courtyards and rooftop patio were all just gorgeous! Pictures do not begin to do any of it justice. The furniture, beds and pillows were lovely and very comfortable - which is rare in Mexico. I made instant coffee with tap water several times and never had any issues, as it is potable water. There is also bottled water supplied, along with the first day or two of necessities to get you started.
The kitchen is a chef's delight, with a 6 burner gas stove, dishwasher, side by side fridge/freezer, huge pantry and neat built-in cabinet trash can next to the double sink.
The neighborhood is a bit rough around the edges, as much of it is still under development. However, people were friendly and we never had any safety concerns.
The location is a bit out of town, but we enjoyed the walk and the peace and quiet offered by being off the beaten path. There are a few local places to grab food, drinks and groceries and many restaurants will deliver there.
Taxi and bus services to town and local attractions are just a few steps away and are also very reasonable. We found it fun to catch the bus for 5 pesos (currently about 35 cents in US dollars!) and just meander through town, jumping off wherever we wanted to explore.
I have already recommended this Casa to my friends and will continue to spread the good word. Excellent accommodations with a more than fair price tag!
Sharyn was a wonderful host who met us on several occasions over wine, lunch, etc. She assured us that she was always was available to answer any questions, which she did, about our accommodation, San Miguel, neighboring towns, places to shop for groceries or to dine, etc.
Sitting on the well appointed terrace overlooking the skyline was a treat to the senses.
Sharyn, our host, communicated with us in advance and answered all of our questions. When we arrived, a neighbour had been alerted to look out for us, open the door and show us what we needed to know about the home. The home exceeded our expectations and we thoroughly appreciated the entrance courtyard and colourful, spacious, well appointed and comfortable surroundings. The kitchen was well equipped and the dishwasher was especially appreciated. We also enjoyed the gas fireplaces on a couple of chilly days. One of the many highlights was the roof top terrace decorated with numerous pots of exotic and colourful flowers and which provided wonderful views of San Miguel and the surrounding hillsides. The home is located a short distance outside of San Miguel but in no way is this an impediment. My wife and I often walked, and greatly enjoyed, the 20 minute trek into town. At other times we took the bus on the nearby main road which left every 10-15 minutes at a cost of 5 pesos each. Taxis were also plentiful and inexpensive. Sharyn introduced us to the community around us so that we were able to shop for local fruits. vegetables and eggs as well as being introduced to the local butcher where we obtained an excellent piece of fillet at half the price we would have paid at home. In short, Sharyn was an excellent host with a charming house in an authentic Mexican location. We were completely satisfied with our entire experience.
Sharyn is a very friendly and meticulous host, eager to make sure you are settled and acclimated with all the information you need to enjoy a fabulous stay at her house and in SMA. Her house is clean, open, bright, and spacious, just like the photos show it to be. Very colorfully Mexican in decor with every modern convenience you will need. And there's a bonus roof-top patio with potted flowers and a view with lovely sunsets. We enjoyed walking into the Centro every day from the house through different neighborhoods, and taking a bus or inexpensive cab back (uphill) later in the day was easy and fast. We enjoyed everything about our stay and will look forward to a return visit next year. Thanks, Sharyn!
This is a sweet and comfortable home, perfect for two singles or a small family. Colorful, artistic and very affordable. We enjoyed our daily walk in to town (about 15-20 minutes from the Centro) and seeing a less touristy part of SMA. Everything you need for a home away from home experience in San Miguel.
Dear Michele, Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughtful review, and thanks for telling me that the coffee maker wasn't working correctly...I had no idea! I have an extra that will be put in there immediately. Your other private comments are also appreciated. There is no central heating in any of the houses in SMA at all, and I will make sure to mention that in my updated description. Again, thank you for your helpful suggestions. Sharyn
The place is absolutely gorgeous, and Sharyn is an exception host. I cannot recommend the Cheerful, Artistic, Retreat more highly.
I felt warmly welcomed, and everything was as listed, the neighborhood was very quiet with friendly neighbors.
It was truly the most wonderful place I've ever stayed on my airbnb vacations. Hope I can come back some other time, and share this with my loved ones.
Our stay in the Sharyn's casa on the main floor of the house was spectacular. Everything was so comfortable and and aesthetically beautiful, that it was almost tempting to forget the exploration of the city of San Miguel de Allende, that was the main reason we were there - and just stay and relax in the house. There was no way to loose in that dilemma, since the city is a gem in itself, worth spending long hours strolling the streets and pure pleasure for the architecture lovers. Returning to the cactus fields surrounding the casa was a transending experience by itself, that would not ever be there, if we stayed in the "centro". Transportation was easy by bus or cab, or best - on foot, after 12 minute walk you are already in the city, and another 5-10 if you want to be right in the heart of SMA.
We highly recommend Sharyn's house to all, and will return by all means.

I retired to Mexico from California with a desire to re-connect to creativity and fun and adventure. It has not disappointed me! Inspiration is everywhere. I feel so fortunate to live in a thriving artist colony. I had no idea how culturally diverse and wonderful Mexico is. Come for a visit, and you just may stay forever for the lifestyle!
I have a son and daughter and two wonderful grandchildren still living in the U.S. My kids grew up in Marin County and graduated from UC Berkeley.
