The Space

Guest House at Euterpe Farms

Welcome! We hope you enjoy your stay in this beautiful part of the world.
Smitty West

Here’s some information and tips to help make your stay easier.

General Safety

Euterpe Farms is a working farm and music studio. That means there are farm tools, farm work, and multiple hazards that you won’t find in most “vacation spots.” This is the beauty and uniqueness of this special place.

As a guest in the Guest House, you are welcome to the apartment and beautiful deck, and non-exclusive use of the pool. You may walk the grounds but please respect the privacy of the occupants of the main house.

Besides being a native plant farm, any portion of the grounds and pool area may be in use for other purposes such as parties and music events, filming, music recording or rehearsal, photography, plein air painting, and private use by the owner, Smitty West. Please be respectful of the privacy and business of the other people enjoying the Farm.

The property requires regular land care, pool service, gardening, and farming that may be occurring at any time, so if you see our happy grounds manager, Urbano….say hola! Smitty also enjoys doing work around the farm, and he may offer you a tour.

Please park on the dirt area at the bottom of the stairs. Do not block the garage doors or the paved circle so delivery and service vehicles can come and go. The beautiful 450-year old oak tree in the front of the main house will thank you as well!

Pool Area
Enjoy one of the great experiences of Ojai….the pool at Euterpe Farms with White Ledge Peak of the Transverse Ranges at sunset! Caution with children…no fence between house and pool. There are pool towels in the apartment.

Euterpe Farms has a 1000’ fenced border and 180 degree view of the beautiful Ojai Land Conservancy’s Ventura River Preserve, and the two million acre Los Padres National Forest. This beautiful, diverse, and wild country is home to an amazing assortment of wildlife found no where else.
This is THEIR home, and WE are the visitors here on the edge of this wilderness. Be respectful of this fact and you will be rewarded with close-up view of an amazing assortment of plants and wildlife. Some of the larger animals you may see: deer, coyote, fox, snakes, bobcat, mountain lion, bear. Bird watchers will LOVE the diversity. We encourage raptors, and you may see or hear several types of owls, hawks, and other birds of pretty.

With big animals come small animals, so if you like lizards, spiders, and other crawlies, you’ll love it as much as the animals that eat them. If you don’t, well, you might have to live with them, because there’s 2 million acres of their home right next door! We try to maintain a no-kill philosophy on the property, and we have yet to see a poisonous snake, although we know that the river bottom is home to several. Best advice: Enjoy the wildlife, but don’t handle it!

Climate and Comfort
Ojai has a reputation in California for being blazing hot, but that isn’t really true. Here at the Farm, during the summer months we are rewarded with a beautiful Pacific marine layer breeze every afternoon, and the average summer daytime temperature is 89 degrees.

That said, sometimes during Santa Ana wind conditions, it does get BLAZING HOT for several days at a time. If you are lucky enough to be visiting during one of these spells (we get maybe two or three of them per year and it can be over 100 degrees), remember that it does cool off at night, so open the windows and night and shut them in the morning as the day warms up. There is an attic fan that can add to your cross breeze, and a portable air conditioner that will take the edge off. But the best solution is a dip in the beautiful swimming pool, and planning an evening poolside until the stars come out.

That said, chances are that you will have fantastic weather, any time of the year, and use the windows to moderate your temperature, and enjoy the porch.

Indoor Living
Ojai is all about outdoors, but you’ll find a lot of indoor conveniences here at the Guest House: Refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, service for small groups, satellite TV with surround sound, wifi, a desk area, books….etc.

Euterpe Farms is on a green septic system. If it didn’t come out of your body or off the roll of supplied septic-safe tissue, it doesn’t go in the toilet!

Solar and Wind and Water
The faucet by the sink delivers you unlimited delicious and “world famous” Euterpe Farms windmill water. This water is purchased by hundreds of fans at our roadside tienda (farm stand) as their exclusive drinking water. Delicious, untreated and pure mineral water. It is raised by the power of the wind from our 1926 Aeromotor windmill from an isolated aquifer under this portion of Meiners Oaks.
On the roof over your head is a 3000 kilowatt solar generating system, making power from Ojai’s most precious asset, our sunshine.

We’re doing our part to help sustain healthy communities of honeybees here at Euterpe Farms. Their hives are very obvious off to the cliff side near the windmill. No one has been bitten that wasn’t messing around with their hives. No one HASN’T been bitten who WAS messing around with them. Your choice.

You’ll see them on the wildflowers around the Farm. Tip your hat and say thank you (or “gracie” they are an Italian variety), and they won’t bother you.

We recommend the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s beautiful Ventura River Preserve. Walk or drive the one-half mile north on Rice Rd. to the trailhead. You may walk the perimeter of the Farm, but we do not suggest trying to climb to the River bottom from the property.

Smitty West
The owner and caretaker of Euterpe Farms, is singer/songwriter Smitty West. If he’s around, he’s a very friendly fellow who might want to share a story or hike with you. (website hidden). If he is on the property, he loves meeting our guests and helping you enjoy your stay. You can hear him sing with his partner Julija Zonic at Il Giardino Restaurant in Ojai most Friday nights.

Some of our favorites for quick, local bites:
Meiners Oaks ( ½ mile north on Rice turn left on El Roblar Ave.)
Papa Lenon’s – delicious, fresh food, counter service
Don LaLo’s – Mexican, fresh, yummy
Farmer and the Cook: Grocery and counter restaurant…organic and local
Downtown Ojai
Il Giardino’s – Italian….Smitty performs here every Friday –
Ojai Pizza – Yep….Pizza and families!
Oak View (5 miles back down the 33 toward Ventura)
Bocalli’s Italian and Pizza
OHM Thai

Have a drink of clean, pure windmill water, courtesy of Euterpe Farms!

This water is brought to you from a pure underground aquifer that underlies this area west of Krotona Hill. The reservoir is mapped by geologists to be fault-separated from the municipal wells in the Ventura River bottom, and in a completely different aquifer.
The well underlies the windmill you see in the field in front of you. Taste it, you’ll love it. So will your dog or horse, so let them have some too!
This water has been lifted by the power of the wind!
Before you is a 1920s-vintage, restored Chicago Aermotor A602 windmill. It was salvaged from a farm near Santa Paula, and put back into service to lift the water that nurtures the young native plants here at Euterpe Farms.
This machine is a thing of mechanical beauty and simplicity. It slowly and deliberately lifts the water from the earth every afternoon in the ocean breezes that move up the Ventura River as the Ojai Valley heats up in the sunshine. The machine is self regulating, turning to catch light breezes, but folding her tail to take the sails out of the wind in heavy winds. Every stroke lifts about two cups of water six inches. It sounds slow, but if the wind blows all day, it will fill one of the tanks you see next to the tower.
There’s a pond next to the well to catch the overflow on really windy days. Look closely forn wildlife around the pond, including deer and bobcat.
What about when there’s no wind?
The farm has installed a solar photovoltaic grid on the south side of the farmhouse. Every sunny day, our electric meter runs backwards! The small pressure pumps that help the windmill during low wind, and pressurize the water in the irrigation system draw on this power. We also have a solar water heating system made from recycled equipment from the 70s and 80s. We try to keep a low carbon footprint here at Euterpe Farms!
Want more than a sip?
There’s a tap for your larger water bottles next to the drinking fountain.
If you would like to fill water bottles, we would ask that you make a donation in the cash box to help keep Euterpe farms eco-friendly, organic and natural.

What is “Euterpe ?”
Actually, “WHO is Euterpe ("you-TER-pee")? In Greek mythology, she is one of the Muses, the daughters of Mnemosyne, fathered by Zeus. Called the "Giver of Pleasure", she was the muse of music.

The Muses dancing with Apollo

The Muses are goddesses or spiritual guides who embody the arts and inspire the creative process with their graces through song and stage, writing, music and dance. They were water nymphs, associated with the springs of Helicon and Pieris.

Here she is in a list with her sisters

• Euterpe muse of lyric song
• Clio muse of history
• Erato muse of erotic poetry
• Melpomene muse of tragedy

  • I really enjoyed my experience at Smitty's place. He was very gracious, the land is beautiful and my friends and I had a blast! I highly recommend this property for a serene getaway in Ojai.

  • My two kids and I had a wonderful time at Smitty's place!

Smitty is a delight and very helpful and available without being intrusive.

The living arrangements were clean and cozy with everything we could need.

Smitty gave us a tour of the grounds that included meeting the chickens, drinking from the windmill-pumped well, and picking herbs for tea. The view is gorgeous. It is very quiet and peaceful.

The pool is filled with water from the well -- it is practically drinking water because Smitty maintains it every day so that there is almost no chlorine but it is beautifully clean and refreshing.

At night we built a fire and sat in the hot tub listening to the critters chirp, looking at the stars.

I can't recommend this place enough. It is truly "Heaven on Ojai's Earth."

  • Everything about this place was just so wonderful and truly was heaven on Earth. Smitty couldn't have been a better host. Upon arrival, he greeted us and showed us the grounds which included a gazebo, freshwater well, pool, jacuzzi, and a stunning view of the Ojai valley. The guest house, which included a full kitchen, table and patio, was clean and comfortable. We were delighted to find that Smitty had left an assortment of herbs and fresh eggs for us! We were the only guests there that weekend so we had the pool and jacuzzi, which was definitely our favorite part, all to ourselves. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better weekend getaway or a more gracious host.

  • We had a truly magical weekend in Ojai thanks to Smitty and his little slice of heaven. Smitty made the coordination of our arrival a breeze and he was there to greet us as we pulled up the long driveway of his specimen tree farm/music studio/oasis of tranquility in the Ojai Valley. Upon arrival we were given a walking tour of the 5 acre grounds which sit on a bluff overlooking conservation lands including the Ventura River, millions of acres of the Los Padres National Forest and dramatic high peaks to the north. Smitty pointed out his windmill-pumped water well, the Owl perch, his bee hives, his chicken coop, various garden herbs, the blue brids in his Elderberry tree any many other little corners of the farm that make it a truly special place. There are ample dining and relaxing nooks around the property. The studio apartment very cozy and has excellent views, the bed and linens were first class, the kitchen is well appointed, the bathroom clean and spacious. Smitty left us a bowl of eggs from his coop and apricots from the orchard which was a really nice touch. Best of all is the pool which looks like it belongs in a Tuscan villa -we spent most of our time there! Needless to say we will be back someday.

    Response from Smitty:

Oh...I hope these folks come back for a MUCH longer stay...they found all this in a one day stay! There's a LOT more here in this special corner of the Ojai Valley.

  • Okay, where do I start? Smitty's farm is ... well ... Heaven.

If you like beauty, nature, peace and feeling like you are literally bathing in a rich and healthy tea of herbs with every breath you take, come visit this property. To make it even better, as a host, Smitty is so kind, welcoming and accommodating that you feel like you are visiting your best friend. (And, no I was not paid to leave this review.)

We were also blessed with good timing as we were able to enjoy a concert featuring amazing local musicians that Smitty occasionally hosts on his farm. Notably, the Three Amigo's, a legendary local group, agreed to join the program on the night we were in town.

If you love Ojai - you will love this property.

    Response from Smitty:

I love it when my guests "get it" like you guys did!

  • My friend and I just returned from an absolutely divine 2 night stay at Smitty's aptly named "Heaven on Earth." We arrived late in the evening due to my late flight, and Smitty and Julija were there to greet us and show us the way.... we were greeted by fresh fruit, fresh mint and chamomile for making tea (all from his garden!), and a comfortable bed and sleeper sofa. We took Smitty's recommendations on places to eat, hike, and hang out, and discovered parts of the town that just beg for a repeat visit soon. The property is expansive, home to native plants and tons of different bird species (my beginner birding eye spotted 13 species in a short 20 min walk). And... I don't even want to talk about the pool, because then all of you will book this place up and I'll no longer be able to find a vacancy! He was the ultimate host, and is living the life that most of us can barely even dream of. Thanks for sharing your slice of paradise!! Will come back any chance I get! ;)

  • We just returned from Smitty's wonderful place in Ojai and had a perfect stay. He was a great host, greeting us and showing us around his picturesque farm. The studio was spacious, clean, and private. The bed super comfortable, and our son said the sleep sofa was really "comfy". The deck and views were amazing. And we thoroughly enjoyed the pool and hot tub. We really appreciated the extra touches like the fresh flowers and fruit from the garden that Smitty left for us. And our son is still talking about getting some eggs from the chickens in the chicken coup. We do hope we can come visit the beautiful farm and charming city of Ojai again.

    Response from Smitty:

A pleasure to share the Farm with a fellow Duke alum! "The girls" were glad to share their eggs with your beautiful family!

  • Just had a fantastic stay at Smitty’s in Ojai. Euterpe Farms has it all. Peace and relaxation. Non-stop mountain views from the porch. Gather your own fresh eggs from the chicken coup. Your choice of veggies, fruits, or herbs from the abundant trees and gardens. The apartment has everything you need, including a full kitchen. Did I mention the amazing sunsets and stars to be seen while relaxing in the hot tub or pool. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet the local fox.

Smitty went out of his way to make sure everything was just right. He always had great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. His tour of the farm was full of fascinating details about the local flora and fauna in the area and his efforts to reintroduce and maintain a variety of native plant species.

And if you feel the need to venture out, Ojai’s main street is only a few minutes away and fantastic hiking in the Los Padres National Forest beckons less than a half hour away.

Smitty has created an amazing place – and envious lifestyle – and Euterpe Farms alone is more than enough reason to return to the Ojai area. It truly is Heaven on Ojai’s Earth. Thanks Smitty.

    Response from Smitty:

So happy to have another great airbnb guest to share the Farm with. I swear, "the girls" lay more eggs when I have nice people here!

  • Heaven indeed! The experience my wife and I had at Euterpe Farms was nothing short of magical.

Smitty was the perfect host. He gave us a detailed tour of the farm, showing us all of the beautiful things he's growing, which included a number of herbs, fresh peaches and loquats. So many delicious treats.

Smitty was hosting a small concert at the farm on the second day of our trip. I can't express how nice it was to enjoy some good music with the local community out there in the open against the backdrop of the setting sun.

It was an unbelievably hot hot hot weekend, so the pool was a welcome relief. The pictures posted on the listing give a good sense of it's beautiful location, but the reality is even more sublime.

As for the inside - the bed and couch were super comfy and the kitchen had everything we needed. Something to keep in mind. The fridge is modestly sized, so you might not want to check out the space before going grocery shopping. We sorta overdid it with our grocery shopping before arriving. Woops! But, not to worry. There's a great little organic grocery just a stones throw away with everything you could want. Or, if you need a wider selection, there's a couple larger markets in town, still super close.

The farm is a short drive to the beach, the mountains, and Los Padres National Forrest. All the nature you could want. Honestly though, the property is so nice that you'll be just as happy hangin' at the pool, or exploring the trails nearby.

All told, we couldn't have hoped for a better experience. If you're looking for an ideal quiet getaway, look no further. Just make sure you leave room in the schedule for us to come back soon!

    Response from Smitty:

Michael would be a fantastic travel writer...Certainly Ojai provides lots of stuff to write about. I'm glad that my little farm gave you guys a taste of one of Ojai's "secret spots" that "traditional" tourists will never see.

    May 2014
  • Smittys farm is a beautiful place. Lovely sunsets from the hot tub and Pool. Amazing gardens and fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables and eggs available to be picked. Lovely live music on some nights. The well water is delicious. On top of all of this, Smitty is a charming, gracious and knowledgeable host
