The space

What sets us apart from other accommodation is the immediate proximity to nature: the bungalows are located in the middle of the jungle and faults, toucans, iguanas and colorful butterflies are often to be discovered from the hammock. We offer you living in stylish wooden bungalows on the banks of the Rio Caño Negro surrounded by the incomparable tranquility of nature. Our cozy rooms (4m x 4m) are equipped with one or two double beds, have ceiling fan, mosquito net and private bathroom. They have a spacious terrace with a hammock, table and chairs and a view of the river. Our El Tucán Jungle Lodge is located in Cocles, 4 km from Puerto Viejo, 1 km off the main road. The 2-hectare grounds and the surrounding area are ideal for walks and explorations, where you can discover brooks, parrots, river turtles and colorful frogs. But also the "civilization" is within reach: from all rooms you have WLAN access. A well-stocked supermarket is 1 km away and several restaurants are within 1-2 km. . Guests arriving by car are free to use bicycles ($ 6 per day). There is a regular bus service to the surrounding area and to San José. We can also order a taxi at any time. The beach is reachable by bike in a few minutes. We are at your disposal for further information

Unique opportunity to sleep with the sounds of the tropical jungle. During the day one can begin to learn the bird calls and sounds in order to see the origin. We saw toucans, sloths, howler monkey, oropendola, humming birds, pileated woodpecker and butterflies while at El Tucan. Beautiful property. Irene has ducks, geese, chickens and two dogs. All greet you as you arrive and leave the property. Each of the two bungalows has two rooms. We could hear our bungalow neighbors conversations and footsteps, toilets flushing, etc. Earplugs are good to have. Mosquitoes are everywhere, along with a few other bugs. Kinda goes with rainforest living. Irene keeps everything really clean and orderly. We enjoyed the retreat from the busy town bustle.

This was my second time staying at El Tucan Lodge. Something seemed amiss to be honest. The host put us in the room closest to their home even though we were the only guests there (there are four rooms). We could hear conversations during the evening. When I asked if I could move, the host seemed very irritated at my request. In an attempt to keep the peace, I stayed in the assigned room. Unfortunately to my dismay, the owners extremely loud chicken woke me up from a deep sleep at 2 am and again at 3:30 and 4 am and at that point I gave up trying to sleep. I don't recall a chicken here from my previous stay. They also have geese and ducks on the property which are every bit as loud as dogs (maybe louder). Had I known, I would have insisted on the room furthest away from the chicken /geese and would have brought my earplugs. I've traveled and stayed in many homes, hotels, and BnB's around the world and I know a good value when I see it. Tucan Lodge feels a bit worn down and the value isn't quite there considering the new competition coming from AirBnB. Considering the huge number of properties available for rent in Puerto Viejo, I would consider other options before this location.

We are still on our trip in Costa Rica, so we will have more places to stay but so far this has been my favorite place. Irene and Wolfgang re very friendly and welcoming, we loved our cabin and the view from our porch, as well as the sounds and privacy were excellent. Breakfast was great and we really enjoyed all of the animals, especially the chickens. Price/value was great.

My wife and I stayed at El Tucan for 5 nights and absolutely loved it. Irene and Wolfgang could not have been better hosts. The lodging it's self was well crafted and positioned to provide privacy and real jungle experience. We saw all kinds of wildlife on the property: Tucans, sloths, birds and a big iguana. We really hated to leave but hope some day to return. Seriously, this is a really special place.

Irene and Wolfgang were wonderful hosts! My friends and I stayed at this cozy jungle gem right by Cochles Beach for 3 nights. The bungalow was adorable and clean, plus they kept the fresh towels coming --- as 4 girls going from jungle to beach to town, we really appreciated it. Our lovely and knowledgable hosts even took the time to introduce us to their amazing livestock (dogs, chickens, ducks, geese, etc) that lives on the property! This was such a pleasant experience.

My husband Wolfgang and I had worked for development agencies in Latin America and Africa for many years before we settled down in our paradise in 2003. We are both nature lovers and enjoy showing the flora and fauna in the surroundings to our guests.
