My wife and I stayed at El Tucan for 5 nights and absolutely loved it. Irene and Wolfgang could not have been better hosts. The lodging it's self was well crafted and positioned to provide privacy and real jungle experience. We saw all kinds of wildlife on the property: Tucans, sloths, birds and a big iguana. We really hated to leave but hope some day to return.
Seriously, this is a really special place.
Irene and Wolfgang were wonderful hosts! My friends and I stayed at this cozy jungle gem right by Cochles Beach for 3 nights. The bungalow was adorable and clean, plus they kept the fresh towels coming --- as 4 girls going from jungle to beach to town, we really appreciated it. Our lovely and knowledgable hosts even took the time to introduce us to their amazing livestock (dogs, chickens, ducks, geese, etc) that lives on the property! This was such a pleasant experience.
This wonderful bungalow in the jungle was everything we were hoping for. Private yet very close to the beach we were able to enjoy every aspect of what the carribean coast had to offer. Irene and Wolfgang are really welcoming and helpful. Thank you!
Irene and her husband were awesome. Their hospitality were 1st class. El Tucan Lodge were quite authentic and anyone who wants to experience the local Pueto Viejo vibe should definitely check it out.
The jungle bungalow was an awesome experience on the Caribbean coast tucked back in the jungle surrounded by monkeys tucan bird's sloths .. etc irene was a great host she served breakfast every morning an was very helpful with what to do in the town .. i would definitely stay at the tucan lodge again
Irene was waiting every time we returned and the room was exactly as pictured. Irene and her husband are laid back, but accommodating, hosts. They make a habanero paste/sauce that is incredible, and pairs perfectly with a $5-per-plate breakfast.
I will warn potential guests: there is a lot of noise in the jungle. It's an incredible experience to hear the sounds of the rainforest at night, but it can be a little sleep-depriving on the first night. Be ready to augment your sleep during the day with a nice nap in the hammock. ;)
The place: Great location! A hidden gem in paradise where you can truly feel that you are residing in the middle of a rain forest. Lots of sound, mostly from the wildlife that share their home with the locals, which can be unnerving the first couple of hours of the first night. That is until the hum of the sound lulls you to sleep every night after.
The hosts: Very accommodating hosts. They know their home, and are eager to point out the wildlife that surrounds it. From a family of monkeys, to snakes on trees, and iguanas just hanging about. Their dogs and ducks can get a little aggressive but they're just protecting their home.
Issues: two words and they are the words that any traveler hates-BED BUGS. Unfortunately after staying for 3 nights, I realized that the bites which started to conspicuously spread all over my body, were not in fact Mosquito bites but rather bed bug bites, we obviously had to leave.
Irene was good about returning my funds on the spot, which diffused what could have been a terrible confrontation with an extremely itchy traveler traveling with a ten year old. I made the recommendation of replacing the beds and hope that measures were taken by the hosts to remedy the situation because truly their place is very awesome! However, bed bugs are a big inconvenience and cause for great discomfort for people to have to contend with while traveling. It's the first time I have had to deal with such pests and it is not at all anything that I would wish upon anyone.

About the Host, Irene
My husband Wolfgang and I had worked for development agencies in Latin America and Africa for many years before we settled down in our paradise 10years ago. We are both nature lovers and enjoy showing the flora and fauna in the surroundings to our guests.
