Dar Sant'Antnin is a stylish, bright and airy townhouse, enhanced with antiques and art, situated in the heart of Cospicua in the historic Three Cities by the Grand Harbour and Valletta.

Recently sympathetically restored to embrace original features including traditional wooden apertures and integrated shutters, exposed limestone walls and original tiles in some rooms.

Imposing stone and artistic wrought iron 'half-landing' staircase runs from ground floor to the private outdoor roof terrace.

The space
We have always paid particular attention to cleanliness, as our reviews show, and continue to ensure that the property is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between stays. Presently we are leaving a one night gap between guest departures and checking in of new guests to further minimise the risk. We are also ensuring supplies of hand sanitiser, soaps and wipes are also available in the property. We prefer to greet guests personally on arrival and show them around the property but for the duration of the pandemic have switched to contactless check-in and will provide detailed directions and a code for the key lock box the day before you arrive.

The property:

Sant'Antnin (dar is Maltese for house and Sant'Antnin is the Maltese for St Anthony as depicted on the very traditional ceramic/maiolica plaque on the front of the property) oozes local character - we want you to wake up and know you are in Malta!

It is an ideal retreat for an individual or couple seeking an authentic slice of Malta within walking distance of great dining options and surrounded by bustling local life, amazing history, architectural gems and cultural attractions.

There are no hidden charges or surprises and so the price you are quoted by airbnb is the total price you will pay - there are no additional charges for air-con, wi-fi, electricity, local taxes or cleaning. The facilities shown in the photos are all private and not shared with anyone else during your stay.

The very traditional Maltese townhouse layout consists of four rooms (living/TV room on ground floor, bathroom on first floor, bedroom on second floor and kitchen / outdoor roof terrace on third floor) connected by a large stone and artistic wrought iron 'half-landing' staircase.

UK king-sized / US queen-sized - 5 ft wide (mattress is approximately 150 cms wide x 198 cms long) - bed with sleep inducing memory foam mattress and decent thread count, 100% cotton, Calvin Klein / Ralph Lauren sheets and pillow cases. The air-conditioning and mosquito net will help ensure a great night's sleep in the Maltese heat. (In our experience, relying on an electric fan without a mosquito net is not conducive to a restful night in Malta). The bedroom has a small balcony offering side views down to Dockyard Creek.

A beautiful bathroom with a large, custom built, curved walk-in shower area with good water pressure and luxury bath linens from Restoration Hardware which we enjoyed shopping for in California. We also leave beach towels in the property in case you don't want to bring your own or are restricted to a carry on bag and want to save space.

Gracing the walls is a collection of original paintings and limited edition prints by Maltese and international artists capturing local scenes.

Locally sourced antique and vintage Maltese furniture, most of which we have lovingly restored and renovated ourselves, adds to the ambience and charm and complement the one-off light fixtures.

Clean, modern and well equipped kitchen (including fridge/freezer, large plates, small plates and bowls, , electric oven and two hobs, kettle, cafetiere, tea pot, tea / coffee mugs, 7 piece saucepan and frying pan set, water and wine glasses, fruit bowl, cheese grater, set of sharp kitchen knives and bread knife, colander, casserole dish, measuring jug, corkscrew, vegetable peeler, tin opener, tongs, chopping board, set of whisks, spoons, masher and spatulas, egg cups, 24 piece cutlery set, scissors, napkins, tea towels, place mats, oven gloves, variety of Fairtrade Clipper teas and Lavazza coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and olive oil) for preparing a snack or a more substantial meal.

The private outdoor roof terrace has two comfortable, cushioned seats with coffee table and umbrella parasol surrounded by lovely local plants. It enjoys some panoramic views and is an ideal place to relax and maybe enjoy a glass of something chilled.

Recently renovated, well maintained and carefully cared for property with free wifi (unlimited data transfer with advertised download speed of 50Mbps and upload speed of 3Mbps. We have also installed a wifi repeater in the bedroom to ensure that the whole house and roof terrace has good wifi reception), flat screen TV with international channel package (mainly in English, Maltese, Italian and French - please note there are no TV channels in German), telephone with free local telephone calls, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, clothes dryer rack and pegs and 2 universal plug adapters (Maltese sockets are same as standard UK / Ireland 3-pin plug sockets).

For your safety there is a smoke detector, a fire extinguisher, a fire blanket, a first aid kit and an emergency light in the property. Even though the property contains no fuel burning appliances or mains or bottled gas we have installed a carbon monoxide detector for peace of mind.

Please note that the property is arranged over four floors (living/TV room on ground floor, bathroom on first floor, bedroom on second floor and kitchen / outdoor roof terrace on third floor) and there are 65 steps from ground floor to third floor. Given the traditional Maltese layout of the townhouse it was not possible to install an elevator. We have added an additional mini fridge/freezer and sink at ground floor level so a cold drink is always close at hand.

Please be aware that it is a legal requirement in Malta to register with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and obtain a licence for any property available for short term rental to tourists. Many local properties are, unfortunately, rented out illegally. Dar Sant'Antnin has been inspected, quality approved and licensed by the MTA (licence no. HPC/4884) and the required sales tax and eco tax are paid to the relevant authorities.

Where you’ll be

Bormla, Malta

Residential district. A varied selection of great dining options and cultural attractions (e.g. Fort St Angelo, Malta Maritime Museum, Malta at War Museum, Inquisitor's Palace and the Cottonera Lines - fortifications consisting of eight bastions, two demi-bastions, nine curtain walls and seven monumental gates that remain in very good condition) are within walking distance. The local bakery is one minutes' walk from the property.

As visitmalta website states “The Three Cities [also known as The Cottonera] offer an intriguing insight into Malta and its history. Left largely unvisited, these cities offer a slice of authentic life as well as a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes.

The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history, as Vittoriosa [also known as il-Birgu], Senglea [also known as L’Isla] and Cospicua [also known as Bormla] have provided a home and fortress to almost every people who settled on the Islands.

Their harbour inlets have been in use since Phoenician times: the docks always providing a living for local people, but also leaving them vulnerable when Malta's rulers were at war. As the first home to the Knights of St. John, the Three Cities' palaces, churches, forts and bastions are far older than Valletta's.

The local communities here celebrate holy days and festas [Maltese for festivals] as nowhere else on the Islands. The most spectacular events are the Easter processions when statues of the "Risen Christ" are carried at a run through crowded streets.”

Please note that whilst the Cottonera region is benefiting from much regeneration at present it is not yet gentrified and is still a little rough around the edges. The local people are incredibly welcoming and proud of the area and its heritage. If you are looking for an established tourist area with nightclubs, high rise hotels and souvenir shops then the Cottonera is probably not for you.

We have been visiting the Maltese Islands since 2006 and are passionate about the people, culture, history and architecture of the historic and vibrant Cottonera area. So much so that we now live in Cottonera ourselves. We love scouring the local markets for antiques and furnishings to restore and incorporate in our properties.
