About this listing
Park your car in our reserved space and spend the weekend walking to cafes, dinner, movies, dancing and Shakespeare. A grocery store is just across the street...welcome home!
Stay in comfort and style while in Ashland! Our rental is big and roomy with lots of light and fabulous furniture. We've been told we have the comfiest bed in town, and the rooms are decorated in peaceful colors. We provided plenty of amenities for a comfortable stay, but of course, excitement awaits out your door. Park your car and walk safely wherever you need to go, all is right here in the center of town. At Siskiyou & Union, you are IN the Ashland Historic Downtown. Please check the map to verify our location, yes, we are THAT close! I timed the walk yesterday, it's 8 minutes to "the bricks".
Every guest has asked me to be sure to add that they LOVE parking the car in our private lot and walking everywhere. The walk home from the theatre is well lit and safe - there is no need to drive once you arrive!
Queen bed in master, luxurious queen sofa sleeper in living room (Really! Grandma bought it so she could sleep there if Grandpa snores).
One thing I can't recommend enough is a visit to Crater Lake. If you have time, and if you are a moderate hiker, this is a great itinerary for a really amazing day: Call (phone number hidden) and reserve your tickets for the boat ride to Wizard Island. Get either the Wizard Island Tour or the Wizard Island Shuttle. It takes about 2 hours from Ashland to get to the parking lot above the boat launch so the 11:30 boat ride is the one to reserve. The hike down (and back up) is steep-ish but the trail is wide and well-travelled. When you arrive on Wizard Island, hike to the Witches Cauldron, the caldera of the island. It is quite a sight to behold. Both hikes are uphill and downhill - there is nothing flat as you are walking up and down the sides of volcano sides. The trails are wide enough for folks to pass safely - we took our 3 & 5 year old niece and nephew and they were fine. I am not sure if my 80 year old mom could do it, but you know, we are going to try! Take a picnic lunch and eat IN the caldera! This is a very memorable day!

Interaction with Guests
We'd love to meet you as you come and go, if you wish. We live on the property, and the yard and pool is shared, but often we don't see the guests - we are here if you need anything or have questions. Also, we are often on vacation ourselves during the summer months so I'm not always home when you arrive, or have internet access due to camping. Please know to park in the driveway, enter through the back gate and head up the stairs. The room will be unlocked and ready for your arrival, I have an excellent cleaning crew who knows your schedule.
We are in the center of it all. We just walk or bike wherever we need to go. The lighted walk home from the theatre gives us just enough time to discuss how much we loved the show, dinner, movie, ice cream, bars...whatever it is we did.
Walk from here, bike from here but if you want to go farther, the City bus #10 is one block away. If you want to drive, we can help you out with directions or, you have free WIFI to look things up.
Other Things to Note
Please note: The stairs leading to the apartment have a handicap lift should you need assistance with the stairs. Due to this, the stairway which is standard 3' can seem narrow. We usually keep the lift under the roof but if it's in your way during your stay, please let us know and we can easily lower it.
No smoking, thanks.
Air conditioning in the room was on. The unit was cleaned and equipped. The host was onsite to greet us.
Gone for the weekend. Everything was left for us! Thank you.
We enjoyed our stay in the carriage house very much. It's perfectly located to walk to theater, shopping, and restaurants. There's even a great yoga studio close by and runners can easily access Ashland's lovely park trails. Even though it was hot during our stay, the carriage house was comfortable with open windows and a fan -- and when it got really hot, the air conditioning worked well. Katy accommodated all our needs, advising us on local swimming holes and even giving us beach towels and sunscreen for our outing. Every restaurant and ice cream place she recommended was excellent. We were so busy exploring Ashland and soaking up Shakespeare that we didn't take advantage of the lovely backyard pool , or make much use of the fully-equipped kitchen -- but we will do that next time!
I almost don't want to give away this find --- this amazing host family and their sweet suite -- because we hope to come back to it again and again. Katy & Jesse have created a marvelous home away from home that matches their description. What is hard to convey is how warm, welcoming, kind and generous and thoughtful a host they are. We not only loved the clean, quiet, conveniently located apartment and gardens, but Katy got us tickets for us to an OSF performance that night! It was just one of those graced opportunities, we happened to be there when the tickets were available but Katy thoughtfully made arrangements (thru a friend) for us to get them. It's clear that Katy & Jesse love their home and Ashland and know how to make visitors feel welcomed and feted. Truly delightful!
I have a hard time writing a review when my experience wasn't fantastic or horrible, but there are a few things that add up and other info I would have liked to know prior to booking:
This isn't what I'd consider a private entrance. You enter into the backyard of the owner's house, then turn left and go up steep stairs to an apartment. This apartment sits above a garage and it feels more like you're staying at someone else's house than a rental. When we arrived and entered the backyard, there were a bunch of kids splashing around in a pool and an older dude just hanging out. It felt kind of uncomfortable, like we were intruding on someone else.
Don't lean on the railing on the top of the stairs. It feels like it's about to break.
The fence says "Carter House Inn" and this booking is called "Carriage House", which is confusing.
Check-in isn't until 3, and you have to be out by 10am. No early check-ins, which meant we had to wander around for hours to kill time since we were in town for an evening play.
No pets. Despite showing up in search results as "pet friendly", this place is not. I didn't learn this until after booking, which was problematic and inconvenient.
There wasn't hand soap in the kitchen. Totally not a huge issue, but if you like to wash your hands, consider this. Ha!
The pool was nice for the hot weather when there weren't kids splashing in it.
The apartment faces an alley that feels really sketchy, particularly if you're walking home in the evening.
No blinds or curtains in the windows facing the alley. This felt really uncomfortable, considering there's a futon in the living room that faces the alley. This brings me to the futon: So uncomfortable. Yikes.
You're going to have to get low to shower, unless you're under 5 foot.
The proximity to the theaters is the only reason to choose here. It's a 10 min walk uphill. And yes, that part was (website hidden);dr: Overpriced and below average experience. Kinda just makes you shrug and go "Eh, maybe not."
I think I will try calling Airbnb to have this particular review removed as there are too many inaccuracies and misleading statements. In full transparency, you would have said you were here on the 4th of July, so yes, kids in the pool will happen. Funny though, I briefly thought about cancelling your reservation when you wrote asking if we allow dogs (which, why would you do that if it truly came up in a “pets allowed” search), I said no, but you said “surely I could make an exception for YOUR dog, since I have dogs on the property”. I love dogs, but some folks are allergic – I also state that in my ad.
WISH I HAD SAID, "EH, MAYBE NOT" TO YOU WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE!
Anyway, I reviewed my listing to be sure I’m advertising accurately. To confirm, we are still listed as:
NO PETS but that DOGS live on the property.
There is hand soap, toilet paper, a blow dryer and Kleenex in the bathroom vanity.
Check in is 3, check out is 11, not 10am. I always accommodate early check-ins and check-outs upon request. (you didn’t request). It’s right there, on the Airbnb ad.
Did you tear out the curtains and blinds? We have both curtains AND blinds on the windows. Really baffling!! This is the craziest, most untruthful review I’ve ever seen!!
WE DON’T HAVE A FUTON! Look at the pictures, read the description. Are you a fiction writer in your day job? I didn't just swap out that couch for a futon.
Every other review talks about the easy, flat, walk – was your walk 10 minutes uphill in both directions, in snowstorms? Ha.
We have a TWO NIGHT min, but you somehow slipped in as a one night reservation, which brings me to...
YOU STAYED ONE NIGHT, ON THE 4th OF JULY!! No doubt Ashland’s BIGGEST day of the year, and yes, we were enjoying the pool. However, I checked the listing again and confirmed that I do mention the POOL IS SHARED, my non-reading renter.
Oh and the stairs! The stairs are mentioned in the listing and are standard height and width, with a handicap lift that can be moved out of the way should the tenant request. Again, you didn’t request it. This information is in the listing AND in the Guest Book which you must have read to get the wifi password.
The private entrance is just that – you do not share your entrance with the homeowner. That is what makes it a PRIVATE ENTRANCE. Private. You should look it up.
Our community relies on full transparency. The lies and inaccuracies in this review are shameful and egregious, and I suspect they are solely based on the fact that I wouldn’t make an exception and allow your dog. The only reason I didn’t cancel your reservation was due to the fact that I knew you’d be screwed and unable to get a room elsewhere ON A SATURDAY, ON THE 4TH OF JULY. The more I think about it, I need to call Airbnb to discuss you, and this review.
The Carriage House is the perfect place to stay in Ashland. It's ideally located walking distance to restaurants, plays and shopping. It is spacious, comfortable and very clean. It was even better than described on website. The kitchen and living room were great bonuses - so much better than being in a hotel room. My trip was short so I didn't get to take advantage of all the extras (pool, tv, internet) but was very grateful for the thoughtfulness in details. I definitely recommend it!
Such a sweet little house! Loved this. Comfortable beds and pillows, great layout, and the kids were crazy excited about the pool (thanks for earning me cool mom points). Can't wait to come back and stay longer. Narrow stairs to the front door were tough for my arthritic mom, but more of an fyi for travelers than a problem. And so walkable to downtown. Will definitely be back!
