Other Things to Note
For the food, my mother is a good cooker of rural vietnamese food with fresh vegetable from her own garden. You can order a meal if you would like, the price is 10$ for one person.
For walking around, It is our pleasure to organise all these, let me know when ever you come to our house.
This is a very interesting home of Thai, a painter, who lives alone (along with a couple of cats). The home is large, old, and full of interesting artwork, collectible items and a zen garden. The house is comfortable. Thai is a gracious host, making breakfast for us on our first morning there. The home is in the Long Bien area, away from the hustle of the city. You will, however, need to get a taxi (Thai will help you call one) in order to get to a restaurant, as there are none within walking distance. All in all, a very interesting place to reflect and recharge.
This was a really fabulous experience. The ad is actually a little deceiving, as it is listed as entire apt/space when it is in fact a private room / home stay with owner Mr Thai. Check in was a bit bumpy as the house appeared vacant and gate was chained on arrival, and when I called Kieu I couldn't get through, so I thought I'll wait it out. Soon after Mr Thai came to let me in. Initially I was confused/uncomfortable because again was under the impression I would have the whole house to myself. But once I worked that out it was great.
Now for the good stuff! The house is really incredible. This is truly a place to unwind and relax. I wouldn't recommend using this as a base to explore Hanoi, as it is not close to the city centre, but would definitely recommend it for the same reasons. I did this stay towards the end of my trip and it was a perfect way to relax, as its very peaceful and 'zen' there.
Mr Thai is a very quiet man, however he is also very intelligent and interesting, and very hospitable. He cooked all meals for me, however I'm unsure if this is guaranteed for every guest, perhaps depending on his own schedule so check to make sure.
I did a cooking class with kieu and her mother at the house, who are both very beautiful, kind and friendly women. Kieu and her mother also showed me around their vegetable patches / fields which was a real highlight! I also got taken to the river to watch some locals swimming at sunset, they were all very friendly, lots of laughs!
All in all this stay was a big highlight of my trip. As with everything in Asia, if something doesn't pan out how you expected, just roll with it and see where it takes you! Highly recommend.
On y reviendra, merci Thaï
my boyfriend and I had a good vibe staying at the house. Thai is an artist who has a welcome and friendly personality. He has a cute cat who is hungry all the time :). The house look exactly the same as photos shown on the website. Thai cooked us breakfast on the day we arrived. His cook is good - baguette and pate are delicious also goat yogurt pudding liked texture is worth to try. He took us to the local market on the next day for Pho (rice noodle) and drove us to the city center. He gave us big help as well as recommended nice places to visit. Thai speaks Vietnamese English and French. I will definitely stay here again at my next visit.
The home of Mr. Le Hong Thai is absolutely beautiful. It is set back from the main road, which lends itself to a serene setting. The house has tasteful artistic touches throughout, including the bedroom. The garden in front is lush and extremely peaceful. I would recommend that anyone staying here set aside at least half a day to a full day to enjoy the peace and beauty of the house.
Mr. Thai also went out of his way to arrange transportation for us, and make a delicious breakfast for us in the early hours of the morning.
The downside of the house was the distance from the main part of town - Hoan Kiem Lake. Although not far in absolute distance, it was difficult to get a taxi at the house without arranging for Mr. Thai to call one, and taking a taxi back to the house at night was even more difficult as the road to the house is poorly lit, with few road signs, and requires some communication with the driver, which can be difficult if you do not know Vietnamese.
Additionally, it was somewhat difficult to get in contact with the owner/manager of the airbnb, which created some anxious moments when we first arrived at the homestay and when we tried to get back and forth from the home.
Other notes: note that the owner has very cute cats, but may not have been noted in the listing (important for those with allergies). Note also that the house is not apparent at first from the gate (it looks like the house is shuttered and vacant), but rest assured it exists!
Our one-night stay at The Character Le Hong Thai house was wonderful. Upon our arrival, Mr. Thai (owner of the house) was super welcoming and gave us plenty of suggestions for what to do for the rest of the day. He even recommended a local cafe in Hanoi where we could have lunch before our planned visit to Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Our early start the next morning was made smooth by Mr. Thai who called a taxi for us and told him which route to take to our destination so that we could avoid the early morning traffic. He even prepared breakfast and coffee! :)
At the house, Mr. Thai was more than happy to answer all of our questions about Hanoi, Vietnam, and himself. His cats, Ho & Mik-Meow were adorable and loved the attention we gave them.
The house itself is truly beautiful, and most of the paintings on the wall are done by Mr. Thai himself!
Ms. Kieu was also very helpful and assisted in whatever way she could when we contacted her.
The house may be a slight journey from the main part of the city, but it is definitely worth the extra travel time to stay in such a serene and beautiful place. Thank you very much to Mr. Thai and Ms. Kieu!
Had a lovely stay, as it is a short cab ride away from the centre we felt like we were in a small village, a walk through the rice fields, vegetable gardens and the working fields which overlook the city and the river we kept commenting that we couldn't believe the centre of town was so close by. Breakfast was simple but lovely. The house has a quirky vibe but I like that.
