Maboneng, meaning ‘Place of Light’, is an urban neighbourhood on the east side of Johannesburg CBD. Maboneng is home to independent retail, restaurants and entertainment venues as well as loft apartments, offices, hotel, a museum and creative factory spaces in an urban landscape.
I live in a diverse neighborhood (racially diverse, with a mix of students, professionals, artists and blue collar workers, etc.) Please note that diversity does not equal unsafe. It is safe, though you should exercise the same caution as you would in any city neighborhood.
To get to the apartment from OR Thambo International Airport (Johannesburg) to the apartment - you have 5 options.
Option 1 - UBER Taxi or Regular Taxi
all the way from the airport. Uber (application for a smartphone) costs between R200 to R300 ($20 to $30 USD) to get from the Airport to the Apartment (and vice versa). Uber is fantastic, many guests have used it in the past and have said that the drivers were very professional and the prices were great (you use your credit card to pay). If you decide to use the Gautrain, then catch an Uber taxi from park station which costs approximately R50 ($5) per trip. I would recommend you use Uber for getting around in general. Regular Cab - make sure you use an "ACSA" approved taxi (e.g. Safe Cabs, Orange Cabs, Maxi Taxi, Rose Boys taxi) and you can easily find them outside the arrival terminal A or B (cost is around R280-R400 or $27-$40, one way).
Option 2- Gautrain
Airport to Sandton takes 20 minutes using the Gautrain (cost is $13 or R135 or €9.3, one way, trains come every 12 minutes) then swap trains at the station to get to Park Station (at no additional cost, should take 10 minutes or so, trains come every 12 minutes). The cab ride from Park Station to the apartment should also take 8 minutes (cost is $5 or R50 or €3.5). Please note that a Gautrain Gold Card costs R12 to purchase, this is a non-refundable cost of the card but can be used during your stay in South Africa.
Option 3 - Shuttle
You can also book the Mabo'go shuttle, which will transfer direct from the airport to 12 Decades & Maboneng. To book the shuttle, please ask me for the email address.
If im around and not climbing a mountain, im more than happy to fetch you from the airport at a cost of R150 each way.
Rent a car- from around R200 per day ($20 US) from Avis, Eurocar - all can be arranged at the airport. Your car can be parked safely outside the building, at no additional charge. This is how we all park. There is a security guard 24 hours in and outside the building.
Other Things to Note
The room itself has a full bed and a closet and sufficient space for your luggage.
Internet wifi (please find "Artisan's Wifi) can be accessed by purchasing vouchers (paypal or credit card).
I am proud and excited to offer you a tremendous value for your stay in Johannesburg. Look forward to hosting you!!!
You are welcome to come and go as you please. Wifi is called "Artisans Wifi" and because we are a bit backwards in South Africa - you need to buy data on the system (like a hotel).
My experience with Jan’s welcoming nature started well before my trip. I had found out a good friend was staying at the penthouse a few weeks prior to my trip for her birthday. I mentioned this to Jan and he helped me to surprise her with a special birthday morning surprise. I knew from this second what type of host I was about to have the pleasure of dealing with. Jan was welcoming, accommodating, informative, and gracious. I appreciate him.
I had the pleasure of spending my one-day layover in Johannesburg before heading to Cape Town at Jan’s maboneng Penthouse. I was pleasantly surprised to find the space to not only be spacious but full of light coming through the many windows that gave me a bird’s eye view of all the street art that embellishes the many surrounding buildings in the area.
I enjoyed the space so much, that I decided to rent the space again for my return to Johannesburg the following week. This was my second time in South Africa and both times I had the pleasure of staying in the Maboneng district. A beautiful area in the heart of the city with an energy and originality not found in the posh often recommended Sandton. I found the area to be safe and welcoming with great restaurants like Pata Pata to grab a meal, arts on main to experience the open markets south Africa have become famous for, and the many people expressing their individual style throughout the streets of the precinct.
Jan’s space was double the size of any of the other options available within the area and honestly one of the best layouts. As mentioned above, the apt had windows across every wall and a balcony with a view of the whole CBD. The space was clean, comfortable, and inviting. We originally planned to have a dinner party to show off the space, but didn’t have enough time with all the activities in the city that took up our time.
I look forward to my return to South Africa and my stay at Jan’s apt once again.
Dinner party coming soon.
I loved my short stay at Jan's so much I had to do it twice. Full review coming soon.
We had a wonderful stay, the apartment is great and have a nice view overlooking Joburg. It was clean and Jan made sure we enjoyed our stay in every way. The Maboneng Area is a hip and urban neighbourhood cozy places, galleries and lots of interesting stuff. The area is quite small but will surely grow bigger. Security in every corner makes you feel safe even in the evenings/nights.
Jan's loft style apartment was amazing. The location is close to Art on Main which is a funky, hipster area with great food, music, and art. The location is great but there is a need to be careful a night. The apartment itself was a great size with a BEAUTIFUL bathroom and view!! Jan was super helpful with providing us with info on where to go and even gave us tips for cape town. It was def a great decision to stay there. we had a wonderful time and would stay again!
Stayed at Jan's place for a couple of days. Jan is a great host, as he is nearby and able to resolve any issues that came up. Maboneng area which is a couple of streets behind the loft has a lot to offer culturally and artistically. I would advise anyone staying at Jan's place to check it out.
Our stay at Jan's Loft was really great. It's very spacious, open and comfortable with amazing views of the city from every window. The place is also very well equipped. We had fun cooking and thoroughly enjoyed the balcony. The location is central and interesting and the building is easily accessible. However one can't really walk around the area at night, as goes for most of the inner city in Jhb. We would definitely stay here again. Great value! Thanks Jan!
Very nice place to stay and we enjoyed the local area.
Really friendly area.
Awesome market on a Sunday
