Maboneng, meaning ‘Place of Light’, is an urban neighbourhood on the east side of Johannesburg CBD. Maboneng is home to independent retail, restaurants and entertainment venues as well as loft apartments, offices, hotel, a museum and creative factory spaces in an urban landscape.
I live in a diverse neighborhood (racially diverse, with a mix of students, professionals, artists and blue collar workers, etc.) Please note that diversity does not equal unsafe. It is safe, though you should exercise the same caution as you would in any city neighborhood.
To get to the apartment from OR Thambo International Airport (Johannesburg) to the apartment - you have 5 options.
Option 1 - Regular Taxi or UBER Taxi
Cab/taxi all the way from the airport. If you do this, make sure you use an "ACSA" approved taxi (e.g. Safe Cabs, Orange Cabs, Maxi Taxi, Rose Boys taxi) and you can easily find them outside the arrival terminal A or B (cost is around R280 or $27 or €20, one way). Uber (application for a smartphone) costs between R200 to R300 ($20 to $30 USD). Uber is fantastic, many guests have used it in the past and have said that the drivers were very professional and the prices were great (you use your credit card to pay). Uber taxi to park station costs approximately R50 ($5) per trip. I would recommend you use Uber for getting around in general.
Option 2- Gautrain
Airport to Sandton takes 20 minutes using the Gautrain (cost is $13 or R135 or €9.3, one way, trains come every 12 minutes) then swap trains at the station to get to Park Station (at no additional cost, should take 10 minutes or so, trains come every 12 minutes). The cab ride from Park Station to the apartment should also take 8 minutes (cost is $5 or R50 or €3.5). Please note that a Gautrain Gold Card costs R12 to purchase, this is a non-refundable cost of the card but can be used during your stay in South Africa.
Option 3 - Shuttle
You can also book the Mabo'go shuttle, which will transfer direct from the airport to 12 Decades & Maboneng. To book the shuttle, please ask me for the email address.
If im around and not climbing a mountain, im more than happy to fetch you from the airport at a cost of R150 each way.
Rent a car- from around R200 per day ($20 US) from Avis, Eurocar - all can be arranged at the airport. Your car can be parked safely behind a secure electric gate at the building for no additional charge. There is a security guard 24 hours in the building.
Other Things to Note
The room itself has a full bed and a closet and sufficient space for your luggage.
Internet wifi (please find "Artisan's Wifi) can be accessed by purchasing vouchers (paypal or credit card).
I am proud and excited to offer you a tremendous value for your stay in Johannesburg. Look forward to hosting you!!!
You are welcome to come and go as you please.
Jan's place is beautiful and Maboneng really is the place to be. On top of that Jan is a great guy, super friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the month I spent at Jan's place. Highly recommended.
We loved our stay at Jans apartment! It is situated in a very cool up and coming area called Maboneng, where you will find a lot of small shops and restaurants. We went to a wonderful food market (every Saturday) called Arts on Main and had lots of great food and drinks. We felt very safe at all times and people in the area are helpful and open minded. The view from the apartment is amazing and Jan is a very nice host. The only negative is the bed, which is uncomfortable, but Jan promised to get a new one. Then the apartment will be perfect! All in all we can definitely recommend to stay in Jans apartment! :)
I have only good things to say about Jan and his apartment, which I rented for 5 months. He's an amazing host, always ready to help and to give some advices about Joburg. Maboneng is probably the best place in Joburg with many restaurants, places for drinking and lovely shops. So I can just recommend to stay there in order to enjoy the city. Moreover, the building is really safe and security guards are nice. The apartment looks like on the photos and it's really comfortable. You have everything you need in there.
Enjoy the place, we did!
I must say that this was my first airbnb experience and it couldn't have been better! The hosts were very hospitable and pretty flexible with the check in and out times, which was helpful to us. The apartment was very comfy cosy and located in a really cool and upcoming area. You can have dinner or drinks nearby, very walkable. Thank you Jan and Tarryn for making our stay awesome
Staying at Jan’s place was the best choice ever made!! Everything was perfect, we loved it and I do not even know where to start.
The APARTMENT is one of a kind…decorated so lovely (just like on the pictures), has everything you could ask for and even more (fully equiped is understated because it really has everything!) and the best part is that everything is so clean … The view is unique and we felt so comfortable that we did not want to leave anymore. From every corner of the apartment you had a perfect view of the skyline of Johannesburg and it was just nice to see Joburg waking up, making it through the day and going to sleep :):):) We loved the city.
There is a lot of space, an open kitchen, bathroom with bathtub and shower, balkony and the sleeping area is seperated from the rest of the apartment via a clothes rack.
Again I have to mention that the apartment was fully equiped: towels, blankets, microwave, washing machine, even backing dishes, spices, wasching powder… to be detailed about it :):)
Our HOST Jan was/is a perfect host and he and his girlfriend are lovely people.
Unfortunately the time was a bit too short, so we only met at the beginning and the end but that did not change anything about the fact that he took excellent care of us. He constantly kept in touch with us, asked if everything is ok, sent us tipps about the ongoing happenings in the area and always replied to every of our questions before and during our stay (as an example, we asked for internet availability and he immediately provided us with an USB Stick). We so wished to have more time.
The AREA (Maboneng) is the place to be in Johannesburg. It is safe, bubbly, a lot to dicover and just wonderful with its own style. There is an event calendar where you can always be up-to-date and get all information about the latest happenings and the various restaurants with a wide range of culinary delicacies.
We enjoyed everything so much that we already planned our next visit and hope to have another nice stay and more time with our perfect hosts.
Thanks again for everything, see you soon! :)
Maboneng and Jan/Tarryn's place was perfect. The hosts were responsive, wonderful and friendly at all times, which made it easy for me to book the loft. The location was ideal as it's very close to a museum, art gallery and really good bars!! Its also very easy to get around Johannesburg from this location. The apartment looked exactly as expected and came with all the necessary comforts you would need (and even delicious green tea!!). Thank you for letting me stay at your beautiful apartment and I hope to be back soon!
Staying at Jan and Tarryn's place was like staying at an old friend's place. The apartment was warm, clean and located in a super central and trendy part of Johannesburg. The hosts communicated with me constantly and ensured my stay was nothing short of awesome. This apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, which helps you prepare any meal you'd like to. Transport and car parking is a pleasure even though I chose to check out the local scene (safe and walking distance to the apartment, I suggest you have dinner at a nearby restaurant called "Pata Pata" - live bands and great African dishes). Overall, I highly recommend the place to anyone.
