The space

Located in Glenville, on the west coast of Cape Breton Island, the house is a bright, open concept living space with 3 bedrooms and bath upstairs, which can accommodate up to six people. There are 4 entrances with a large deck off the back of the house which offers views of the Cape Mabou highlands. A brook also runs through the four acre property. The cottage is fully furnished and includes a dishwasher, washer/dryer, and jacuzzi tub.

The home was built around 1901 but has had many renovations in recent years. There are Honduras pitch pine hardwood floors throughout. Four skylights on the second floor add beautiful light during the day and offer a chance to stargaze from your bed at night. The jacuzzi bath tub is a nice way to relax at the end of the day.

The cottage has a feeling of privacy but is centrally located just off Route 19 directly between the villages of Inverness and Mabou. Inverness, less than a 10 minute drive, has beaches, shops, hospital, Arts Centre and is home to Cabot Links golf course. Mabou, the same distance in the other direction, has more beaches, hiking, and the Red Shoe Pub. Walk to the Glenora Distillery, half a mile away for fine dining, the beautiful bar, live music, and single malt whiskey.

This is a really excellent cottage, especially for the price. If you are in Cape Breton for the music, you really can't get much better of a location; 15 minutes from Mabou and 15 minutes to the grocery store in Inverness, it's pretty perfectly situated on the Ceilidh trail. It's also only an hour from Cheticamp, which has some amazing music. That's about as good as it gets in terms of convenience if you are in Cape Breton for Celtic Colours or music. The yard is really lovely and the grill is nice to have for those of us that relish the rare chance to eat live lobster. (and there is a fish market nearby in Port Hood.) I will say we never found the path to the brook--it may be too overgrown to make much use of at this point, but that may be fixed by the time the next season comes along. All of the beds are very comfortable, and the duvets will keep you warm. The Cottage is immaculately clean (and modern, if you are the kind of person that cares about that sort of thing.) There's also a lot of great trails in the area, including the coastal walks, the Inverness beach trails, and the Mabou Highland Trails (and of course the Cape Breton Highlands park, but that's more of a day trip.) There is a full kitchen on site, which is awesome, and a decent set of knives and a decent cutting board, which is something that is rarer than you might think in a rental! Also a working washer and dryer, which is a godsend since we were there 2 weeks. There are a few minor caveats people should be aware of when staying here: -CDMA phones (Sprint and some Verizon) NO LONGER WORK IN CANADA as of May 2016. There is NO LANDLINE at this house, so if you use one of these carriers, make sure to purchase a burner phone when you cross the border! I believe burner phone are available at 7/11 in CAN, but I did not see any in the Atlantic provinces, so you may want to plan ahead and order one for your stay. (remember, if you’re using a CDMA phone, a sim card might not work—make sure to check before going the sim card route.) -The same open floor plan people like in modern homes make this house have very, uh, good acoustics, so I recommend bringing ear plugs or a jam box if you are sharing the house. ;-) -The Jacuzzi is great for bathing in but tricky for showering in; getting in and out may be difficult for older people with bad knees, and the shower head is a bit low to the ground if you are a taller person. -If you like lobster, either bring your own pot or be prepared to kill them with a knife--there is no provided lobster pot and the hosts (understandbly) do not want them inside.

We had a great time there. We were playing golf at Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links golf courses and it was very close by. We enjoyed using the jet tub after our games and using the washer and dryer to keep our clothes clean and dry on the damper days. We didn"t have cable there and it was rural speed internet but it worked well enough for our purposes. There was not a lot of accomodation in the area because the demands of the new Canadian #1 golf course Cabot Cliffs. Much cheaper than Pebble Beach in California and far more beautiful! We were very lucky to find this beautiful house with all the lovely wood interior.

We had a fantastic experience at the Glenville Cottage. As a group of four friends looking to golf on Cape Breton Island, this could not have been better accomodation. A quick drive from Cabot, and a walk down the street from Glenora Distillery, the cottage was in the perfect place to ensure we had a great time. Thanks to Brenna and Brandon for their place and for making the stay stress free (lots of instructions, tips, etc were provided which was great).

Trevor - we're so happy to hear you had such a good time at our cottage, golfing at Cabot and enjoying the Distillery. We call it our neighbourhood bar : ) Would love to have you back next time you're in Cape Breton.

We grew up on Cape Breton Island - in Inverness and Mabou. This is our first house and one that we've admired for many years. We live and work in Halifax but visit Cape Breton as much as we can. Our most recent vacation was a long weekend in Chicago - Cubs game at Wrigley Field, a river/lake boat tour, lots of walking, a show at the Vic Theatre and delicious food. We're enjoying life with our toddler Lucinda Belle.
