Great place! Excellent value!
Very close to restaurants and shops, this room offers a wonderful place to stay while visiting San Miguel de Allende. To top it off, Patricia is a delightful host.
Pat's house sits among a lavishly landscaped private, secure group of four homes. The house itself is roomy, the kitchen is more than adequate and the private bedroom spacious and comfortable. You can enjoy coffee or a meal in the garden or on the roof terrace.
Good restaurants lie within a five minute walk and you can be in the center of town in 15 minutes. What first time visitors to SMA do not realize is that the church bells and regular fireworks present a real challenge to tranquil living, not to mention sleeping. You can hear them throughout the city but the noise will overwhelm you in El Centro. A better plan is to live 15 minutes from El Centro and walk or take a cab downtown. A cab costs $2.50 regardless of the distance.
Pat's is the BEST! She welcomed me & helped me get situated. Her place is well-located, walking distance from Centro & also to Mega (the big store that has everything). Plus there are many sweet restaurants/cafes right in her area. Pat's is the farthest from the side-street, so very quiet & private -- even with a roof garden view to enjoy. Pat -- and her very cool cat Fidel -- are very accommodating. A huge plus is that on the day I departed (supposedly to be picked up by the shuttle @ 7:00 am), she phoned the shuttle service & discovered my reservation w them had kind of slipped through a crack... so she negotiated on my behalf and stayed with me until they arrived to pick me up. Thank you Pat!!
I stayed in Patricia's home for a week. It is
a very good option for a single woman visiting San Miguel.
The entry garden is lovely with flowers and
singing birds in a neighborhood just off the
Ancha, which easily leads directly into the
Centro district. A bus stop is quite close-by
as is access to taxis.
My room was spacious with plenty of closet
room for unpacking and storing bags. And
very peaceful. I definitely appreciated a long
table in the room, a handy surface for so much.
WiFi was excellent. Be aware there is an
agreeable cat, Fidel, but he does not come
with the room. He has his own spaces.
Patricia is an amiable host, a good listener,
and will not be intrusive. I am rather independent,
but knew if I needed any assistance she would
Should I return to San Miguel, I would hope
"my" room at Patricia's would be available.
Patricia was expeditious in responding to my timely request for booking as I made it shortly before I had travel plans.
She accepted me into her lovely home graciously and frequently assisted me with directions, instructions and a map I was able to take with me and keep as I am considering moving to SMA.
She grows many plants including lettuces, spinach, berries and invites you to partake of them. I had a delicious and healthy salad!
I had some issues with internet connections and Patricia aided me in travel plans with use of her computer and telephone. I could not have made these travel plans without her personal assistance.
She went with me the first night to a local nearby restaurant as I needed dinner and she wanted to make sure I could find my way.
She lives at the end of town and I was able to get my exercise in and partake of the many restaurants and shops of SMA.
I would look forward to returning to Patricia's home for return visit to SMA.
The house was beautiful and very peaceful. Patricia was a warm and welcoming host. She brought me to an ATM when I first got to town and showed me around town to get me situated. When it rained she leant me her own boots so I wouldn't freeze. I had a wonderful time staying with her and would certainly stay with her again!
My trip to San Miguel was to decide if this might be my retirement destination. Patricia was so helpful showing me what life is like for a single woman expat! Her home is comfortable and inviting and I already miss Fidel the cat and the parrot that wolf whistles at me!
About the Host, Patricia
I am going into my seventh year in Mexico and during those seven years I have travel extensively –many many visits to Michoacán and Oaxaca and Puerto Vallarta, Melaque (four hours south of Puerto Vallarta), Merida and Cancun. The way I travel is to be able to focus on my main interest in Mexico which is the Folk Art of Mexico. I had two quarters to go to finish a BFA with an emphasis on Ceramic Sculpture and Life Drawing. So I have gone to the areas where Mexican ceramics are most famous, Oaxaca, Michoacán and in the state of Mexico, Metepec. I have never been a weaver but I am passionate about learning and collecting textiles-Huiples and rugs. I also make jewelry and I collect beads on my travels i.e. amber from Chiapas.
I stay in simple places to save money and so that I know I will be speaking Spanish and getting tips on finding the artist that I might want to speak to and learn from. I love reading book about artisans and how they make their crafts.
In SMA I go to art opening and because there are so many artist here-this is could be a weekly occurrence.
Simplicity lets me meet people easily. I am a psychiatric social worker so I like to listen to the stories about the lives of the artist and I enjoy hearing what drives them to do the work they do.
SMA offers all kind of music from rock and rolls, blues and jazz to opera and classical music all of which I love.
It also has theatre I particularly like the play readers group –they read plays on stage -a very high caliber of acting. And we must forget the Sunday afternoon Poetry group or the Writing conference and Poetry Conference.
There is also dance, salsa, tango all kinds of Latin dances… Flamenco –you can learn it here are just go out and dance.
Of course another passion is organic gardening-I go to the Tianguis Organica weekly to get the veggies that I don’t have in my own garden.
I also enjoy swimming in the local Hotel Aldea pool and going to the hot springs at La Grueta.
Oh let’s not forget the food in SMA! I just had the best Chiles en Nogada at the Bugambilia Restaurant, a wonderful dish of a stuffed poblano pepper-stuffed with ground meat and dried fruits with a white walnut sauce with red pomegranate seeds in top –traditionally eaten on Independence Day September 16th. There is also a gluten free restaurant –the Good Food Café that is amazing!
