  • Excellent

  • We were delighted to find this large, comfortable, quiet studio apartment and its kind, helpful, communicative host --- we plan to stay here again while visiting family in the area. The beds are nice, new Ikea foam mattress sofa beds, there is a full size, well-supplied kitchen and a big walk-in shower, and as a bonus a beautiful garden to stroll through when entering and leaving the apartment.

Bettyjean really worked to make our stay a good one and was available to help with any little issue, such as when we accidentally locked ourselves out. The neighborhood is residential, safe, and quiet. We appreciated how dark we could get the room by pulling the curtains --- often an issue for us when we are traveling! Parking was right in front of the house.

This was our first experience with airbnb and we are very pleased with it.

  • Let me start off by saying this was my first airbnb experience, and BettyJean was easy to communicate with online, quick to respond to via the website and via email.

Second of all, I believe all listings should have a certain standard of transparency. This listing, in a safe and quiet neighborhood, is part of a basement with adjoining sections of the space reserved for the owner’s personal belongings and (guest accessible) washer and dryer--a great plus!

It's a basement: my boyfriend is 6’3” and had to duck under large pipes or stoop under ceiling walls. Note for future renters: this space is comfortable if you are under 5’10”. At the time of this review, the pictures we saw on the airbnb site had deliberately edited out large pipes along the side wall -- which could have indicated this was a basement, but we never saw it until arrival. Another, that has since been deleted, included an L-couch on a blank wall, which was actually the same painted skyline wall that you can now see with different furniture. The pictures repeated the same space, but with different furniture arrangements, advertising a bigger space than actual. My boyfriend and I rented this place for a month, the low ceilings and tight space were challenging for this stay versus a weekend booking.

We never personally met BettyJean (she told us upon arrival that she was still recuperating from elective surgery) but interacted with Marc. The unit had electrical issues with microwave and toaster use as the power would cut out and need to be reset. Marc told us that we just have to “deal with it” and have “better planning” when using the appliances, candid remarks that we wouldn’t typically mind from close friends, but was a bit off-putting hearing it on the 3rd day of our stay.

Kitchen: Nice stove, sink, refrigerator and coffemaker. Dishware were in excellent condition. However, microwave’s display was non-functional and only auto-minute function was working, toaster triggered the smoke alarm, no ventilation other than the windows.

Storage: The beds each have large drawers filled with plenty of clean linens and towels. They also kindly provided us with a portable closet for hanging our work clothes, upon request.

Bathroom: Drainage was the primary issue due to improper funneling of water, which would leak into the adjacent basement area. The walk-in bathroom is separated by a curtain, providing a barrier between the toilet and shower.

Privacy: Our privacy was respected for the most part. A dehumidifier was left in the middle of the unit and all the extension cords/wires off the floor. Not being from the east coast, we were not accustomed to these climate adaptations. Not a big deal, but we definitely would have appreciated fair warning that they were going to come into the unit in our absence.

Overall, we made the most of our circumstances but we would respectfully decide to look elsewhere for our stay in the Hackensack/New York City area in the future.

  • Bettyjean and Marc were excellent hosts. They went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and convenient. The place was brand new, with all the amenities you will need, in an excellent location. Couldn't have asked for a better experience!
