We are flexible and will try to accommodate special needs, including a HONEY MOON vacation package. My wife and sister in law are great cooks and can provide home cooked, farm fresh, organic meals for reasonable cost. Tico style cuisine.
The guest have unlimited access to the 50 acres of private space to explore and enjoy. Kids especially will run wild on the ranch and never get bored. Many farm animals including cows, sheep, chicken, ducks, pigs and horses. We offer horseback rides/lessons - pleasure mount or trail rides for small cost ($25). The stars of the animal show are now 3 PARROTs after which we named the place (meet Papuga Papagai, and ToTi). We rescued them from fallen nest and have raised them since chicks. 'Born free live free' they fly around and will entertain you for hours. recently an abused baby toucan was brought in and Teddy is doing fine at this time.
U can volunteer to help with daily farm chores or join us in trail building .Take the time to hike the private trails to secluded rivers and waterfalls.
The wonderful sights and sounds of nature will enchant you and warm the soul. It's really peaceful and quite, cool year round and always green. Forever springtime here. The elevation is 800 mts(approx. 2650 ft ) which means temps are low and views are high.

Full access to ranch and all facilities (some restrictions apply) Close by are zip lines, hanging bridges, and Arenal Volcano Observatory. Popular activities are: Hot springs (ask about free hot river) hiking trails and horseback riding, fishing lake , living Butterfly Conservatory and Eco- zoo in the village. A new action tour just starting is ' river drifting' and is a lot of fun. Several nice restaurants and sodas , a small grocery store and two places of worship in our village of El Castillo.
Although there is the river and waterfall on the property we do not have a real swimming pool. So, we negotiated complimentary pool privileges at a 4 star Hotel close by for our special Guests. It is 5 min away by car or mellow 15 min walk from the house. They have free wifi ,cold and hot pools, bar and restaurant. Enjoy.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the original ranch house on the property so the Guest house and surrounding gardens are dedicated to you. The family and I interact when appropriate/ needed and consider it a privilege to be of service. We are available especially if guest want help setting up activities such as tours, home cooked farm meals to order and recreation/entertainment. Our hosting service style goes beyond a simple rental management into caring for the needs and comfort of our guest. Our mutual goal is to make this vacation ,your vacation, the best ever!!
Otherwise it's a private set up at the house and independent living in quiet enjoyment.
Thank you for looking us over and we hope you choose to spend some time on Parrot Hill. Looking forward to it.
Hasta Luego and Pura Vida,
Quite little village of 800+/- friendly people. Few restaurants and a grocery store. Largest living butterfly and snake exhibits in all of Costa Rica right here.
Many activities very close ie: canopy zip lines ,hanging bridges, and hot springs (ask me about a free local spot)
local busette makes twice daily run to La Fortuna for $6,
Recommend 4x4 rental car when driving in Costa Rica in general, but it is not essential, as the road leading here is in decent shape at this time.
Other Things to Note
I can help arrange tours at no extra charge to you and make secure advance reservations.
Golden Rule and quiet enjoyment. Love is all there is.
We just returned from an incredible week staying at the Parrot Hill Ranch and miss it already. It is an experience like no other and we were thrilled with our host and his entire familia. As other reviewers have mentioned, highlights included the horseback ride and hike to the waterfall, the spectacular views, the un-fussy, yet beautifully appointed private accomodations, the easy access to Charles and his knowledge of things to do in the area, and on and on. We especially loved feeling a part of the true Costa Rican farm life - do not come here expecting your sneakers to stay clean and dry and your skin to remain un-bitten. You can venture out to fancier all-inclusive resorts for fabulous hot/cold pools complete with slides and wet bars, ziplining, and typical pampering spas. Try something different like Parrot Hill and experience a more authentic Costa Rican Pura Vida! Thank you to Charlie, Janet, Eduardo, Maria, Diego, Yogi, Toby, Fogie, Totie, Papuga, Sugar Daddy, Snowflake, Buddy and all!
My family and I stayed at Parrot Hill for two nights. We absolutely loved the ranch! The house was clean, comfortable, and quiet, and the view was stunning. Charlie was a very gracious host - very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. We went horseback riding one afternoon - Charlie and the guides were very attentive and accommodating to our different skill levels and abilities. I hope to visit again soon!
We had a beautiful experience in Costa Rica and a large part of our experience was our time at Parrot Hill Ranch. It was the perfect location for family time. We had some delicious food prepared for us, got to buy from eggs, milk and cheese straight off the farm, had a great time horse back riding and hiking down to the waterfall, relaxed on the hammocks while looking at the beautiful views, and swung on the Tarzan swing. Charlie seemed a bit distracted while we were there but he was still able to manage our stay. We didn't get as much attention as other groups seem to have gotten but that's okay - we kind of liked feeling like we were completely isolated.
Charles and Jeanette are wonderful hosts. Location is the best and yes also with us, the homemade cooking was superb. Eventhough we are starting discovering AirBnB, this would end up in a Top 3, diamond BnB Destination. The bedrooms were comfortable. We slept on the upper level. for 2 adults and 1 kid (13yr old) space was enough. We didnot need the other upper room. The balcony was our real asset and we enjoyed both sunset and sunrise even though the Vulcano was mostly in clouds. Parrot Hill came with lots of experiences, Tours, hikes, tarzan swing, farming (nice for our son) all around Charles own property including his own waterfall !
ALso the Parrots, the Tucan and even the dogs are fun to have it around you. The parrot had breakfast with us !
We went on a combo tour of horseback riding and hiking down to the waterfall. Our guide, Carlos, Jeanette's brother, was awesome. no real English but very knowledgeable and the horses were wonderful trained. We saw rare birds and fruits. In the near future, Charles told us, he will add a once-in-a-lifetime jungle experience, 'the queen of the jungle' experience. You will go with Jeanette in the jungle and she will share on how to survive for some days in the jungle. Probably not for the faint-hearted, but we liked it and would come back for that and spend some more time to explore more from the wonderful Arenal region. Its a wonderful region and so many place to discover.
One advice: make sure you have a 4x4. The potholed road from La Fortuna to El Castillo is a real disaster. We were in the dry season. cannot imagine the challenge in rainy season...The road up to the Ranch isnot much better. Make sure you ask Charles for some landmarks to find the road (go left before the bridge going into El Castillo) up. As in whole Costa Rica all roads (good or bad) are very poorly signposted. If you go to or coming from Monteverde we recommend the road around the lake. Its well-paved and a beautiful ride. You can take a rest in nice cafe/restaurants with stunning views.
This place was unreal! I loved it. Eduardo and Charles were both very helpful and friendly. The location was simply stunning, however it was a little difficult finding the place. I would not recommend driving at night to find Parrot Hill Ranch. I absolutely loved the house and the friendliness. 10/10
Wow, what a magical place! Between the lush flora and abundant fauna (parrots, of course, a rescued toucan, plus every farm animal imaginable), the unbeatable views to lake Arenal and the volcano, beautiful and comfortable guest houses, and delicious food, we didn't want to leave! I cannot recommend staying with Charles and his family at Parrot Hill more highly! He was wonderfully helpful in booking activities and we went on a private horse back riding tour to the gorgeous waterfalls on his property. Well worth the money! I can see the hike to the falls being a bit strenuous if you don't work out regularly, FYI. The village of El Castillo is lovely, and not tourist-y like La Fortuna, but you can still access all the fun nearby activities. We hiked Cerro Chato (and felt pretty awesome for managing to make it to the crater lake!), and did a combo canyoning and rafting tour with Desafio tours, highly recommended. One caveat is that you will need 4 wheel drive and manual transmission to navigate the roads like a boss. Trust your GPS; Parrot Hill really is at the end of that crazy steep turnoff, lol. don't follow our lead and arrive at night unless you are accustomed to the Costa Rican roads already. Finally, there is a shortcut to Monte Verde from El Castillo that requires a fairly intimidating river crossing if you are feeling adventurous! Definitely was a more scenic drive than the northern route around the lake.
We had a beautiful stay at the Parrot Ranch. Charles and his whole family were very friendly and hospitable. Every moment was magical. From the entertaining birds to the beautiful sunsets that lead to lightning bug evenings this place is everything Charlie describes and more. We were able to enjoy a fantastic horse ride to one of the water falls with Carlos who despite his limited English taught us a great deal about the forest and how the farm works. Janet made us a delicious meal with the best lemonade ever. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. The home is beautiful but we enjoyed sitting on the balcony much of the time. We are so glad we made time for the second waterfall, another hidden jewel on Charlie's property. Our only regret is that we did not plan to stay longer. We could have easily stayed our entire vacation here and had a fabulous time. Thanks again Charlie and to your whole family. We hope to come again someday :)
