We are flexible and will try to accommodate special needs, including a HONEY MOON vacation package. My wife and sister in law are great cooks and can provide home cooked, farm fresh, organic meals for reasonable cost. Tico style cuisine.

The guest have unlimited access to the 50 acres of private space to explore and enjoy. Kids especially will run wild on the ranch and never get bored. Many farm animals including cows, sheep, chicken, ducks, pigs and horses. We offer horseback rides/lessons - pleasure mount or trail rides for small cost ($25). The stars of the animal show are 2 PARROTs after which we named the place (meet Papuga and Howie). We rescued them from fallen nest and have raised them since chicks. 'Born free live free' they fly around and will entertain you for hours.
U can volunteer to help with daily farm chores or join us in trail building .Take the time to hike the private trails to secluded rivers and waterfalls.
The wonderful sights and sounds of nature will enchant you and warm the soul. It's really peaceful and quite, cool year round and always green. Forever springtime here. The elevation is 800 mts(approx. 2650 ft ) which means temps are low and views are high.

Guest Access

Full access to ranch and all facilities (some restrictions apply) Close by are zip lines, hanging bridges, and Arenal Volcano Observatory. Popular activities are: Hot springs (ask about free hot river) hiking trails and horseback riding, fishing lake , living Butterfly Conservatory and Eco- zoo in the village. A new action tour just starting is ' river drifting' and is a lot of fun. Several nice restaurants and sodas , a small grocery store and two places of worship in our village of El Castillo.

Although there is the river and waterfall on the property we do not have a real swimming pool. So, we negotiated complimentary pool privileges at a 4 star Hotel close by for our special Guests. It is 5 min away by car or mellow 15 min walk from the house. They have free wifi ,cold and hot pools, bar and restaurant. Enjoy.

Interaction with Guests

We live in the original ranch house on the property so the Guest house and surrounding gardens are dedicated to you. The family and I interact when appropriate/ needed and consider it a privilege to be of service. We are available especially if guest want help setting up activities such as tours, home cooked farm meals to order and recreation/entertainment. Our hosting service style goes beyond a simple rental management into caring for the needs and comfort of our guest. Our mutual goal is to make this vacation ,your vacation, the best ever!!
Otherwise it's a private set up at the house and independent living in quiet enjoyment.
Thank you for looking us over and we hope you choose to spend some time on Parrot Hill. Looking forward to it.
Hasta Luego and Pura Vida,
charlie

The Neighborhood

Quite little village of 800+/- friendly people. Few restaurants and a grocery store. Largest living butterfly and snake exhibits in all of Costa Rica right here.
Many activities very close ie: canopy zip lines ,hanging bridges, and hot springs (ask me about a free local spot)

Getting around

local busette makes twice daily run to La Fortuna for $6,
Recommend 4x4 rental car when driving in Costa Rica in general, but it is not essential, as the road leading here is in decent shape at this time.

Other Things to Note

I can help arrange tours at no extra charge to you and make secure advance reservations.

  • Our family of 5, including 3 boys, had a great time at Parrot Hill.

We visited 4 different places throughout Costa Rica, and when I asked our boys the highlight of the trip overall, they all said the horseback ride at Parrot Hill up to a point in the rainforest where we got off our horses and hiked to a waterfall was the highlight of a great trip.

Charlie was very a hospitable host -- always seeking to please us.

    Response from Charles:

Our private horseback trail ride and rainforest waterfall hike is a ' one of a kind ' life experience and only cost $25 a person. It has been our pleasure to guide man guest there safely.
We now have opened another route which takes us deep into the Monteverde jungle where we camp overnight along the Black Rock River Canyon. Want to go? Let's go!

  • We loved Parrot Hill Ranch. As everyone says, the views are breathtaking, the best in the area. We spent so much time on the ranch instead of exploring the area, because it was so much to see here. Garden was beautiful; hammock area on the hill was so relaxing. Our toddler daughter was so happy to see farm animals and four parrots that Charlie rescued. She was playing for hours with bunnies and ducks. Charlie’s cousin gave us a private tour to waterfalls. We saw a lot of monkeys!
We stayed on a first floor and we liked it, but when we saw the second floor, we were blown away. Well worth to spend extra money. Kitchen was equipped with dishes and utensils, but not condiments like salt and pepper.
As there are no grocery stores nearby, I would recommend getting some meals from Charlie’s wife, they are delicious and not expensive. Her tea and lemonade are out of this world. We also loved Baldi hot springs and recommend them to everyone. We also saw a mountain lion or jaguar on the main road at night.
One think I would recommend is getting directions from Charlie before you leave and print them, since your phone may lose a reception in the mountains. Roads near Arenal and Monteverde are unpaved, but we didn’t need four wheels drive even in rainy season (rental company was trying so hard to sell it).
We had a great time and weather was a little cooler than by the ocean. The only think I regret that I forgot to try horseback rides on the farm.

    Response from Charles:

Thank you Edita. This family from Europe were both lovely and lucky. They saw monkeys and a jungle wild cat in the same day. There have been several spotted jaguar sightings in the area this year so maybe they saw her too. We are the witness to many once in a life time experiences that are unforgettable.
This location is awesome for spotting all sorts of interesting creatures daily.
Our guest are also having a great time with the baby birds ,including Toucan Teddy our newest member. My family and I extend a warm welcome to all who would choose to venture off the beaten path and seek a new and different type of vacation site, that being Parrot Hill Ranch of Costa Rica.
Best wishes to all travelers world wide,
    Charlie

  • My family and I spent two nights at the Parrot Hill Ranch, where we found Charlie and his family to be extremely helpful, friendly, and relaxed. Charlie had thoughtfully sent us directions beforehand, which you'll need because the ranch is far off the beaten path. But it's one hundred percent worth it when you arrive and find a view of the volcano and most of Lake Arenal from your window. It must be about the best view around. The apartment, built and designed by the family themselves, was covered in beautiful wood panelling, and was private, clean, and comfortable. Charlie's wife prepared a lovely meal for us upon arrival, together with cookies and fresh juice. One of the highlights for us was interacting with the parrots that Charlie's family rehabilitates and adopts when necessary from a nearby nest. I can recommend the Ranch to anyone looking to enjoy Costa Rican scenery and wildlife, and especially to people interested in an alternative to touristy Fortuna.

    Response from Charles:

Parrot Hill is an alternative destination to the usual hotel resort or a city dwelling/condo on the beach. Try us for a change, a top of the mountain ranch on the edge of the rain forest in the heart of Arenal. Cool temperatures and cool birds . U B cool and come stay here too.

  • Parrot Hill Ranch was a fantastic start to our Costa Rican vacation. We arrived later than expected but Charles was waiting for us and had dinner ready when we arrived. Since the upstairs was not rented, Charles upgraded us and what an experience it was to have that view! Every morning was such a treat to sit on the balcony and see the Arenal Volcano to the right (it is very close) and the lake off to the left. The dinner was so good that we requested breakfast the next two mornings. I can't say enough about how good the food and service was as Charles's daughter helped bring breakfast to us starting with fresh fruit. One morning Charles asked us to come down because he had something to show us...two baby Parakeets that they had just found abandoned which they decided to rescue! We got to feed them and learn a little about them as well. Very cool experience and very Costa Rican I'd say! Another highlight was hiking on the ranch down to the waterfall. Charles went out of his way to help us with little things such as suggestions on places to go and cream for my wife's back since she was sore from pregnancy. Overall Charles made our first two nights in Cost Rica enjoyable and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Congratulations to this great couple expecting their first child.
Lot's of love in the air on Parrot Hill. Love for the little baby birds who have fallen and can't get back to the nest.Friends in the village just brought us two newborn wild turkey that they discovered in a fallen tree by the river. We put them in with our domesticated turkeys ,one of which just had a hatch and she adopted them right away. They are so cute and now that they can fly a little they flap up on top of the mother hen 's back and ride around most of the day in style. never a dull minute and who knows what will happen next. Did I mention the ant eaters and the spyder monkeys-oh yeah...

  • We arrived at Parrot Hill Ranch right before sunset and WOW, what a view! We were fortunate to have arrived on a day where the volcano was 100% visible and not covered in clouds, so we had an amazing view of not only the volcano, but gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Arenal as well. The sunset will just take your breath away and it's nearly impossible to photograph and capture all that beauty that we see with the naked eye. Also, the temperatures here were more mild than any other place that I stayed in Costa Rica.
We stayed in the bottom 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom suite which is adorably rustic with large picture windows. The rooms are spacious, beds are comfortable and there is a small kitchen with a refrigerator available for use. The shower had plenty of hot water and was quite refreshing. I would, however, recommend not leaving the windows open for too long, as you are in close proximity to the jungle. A number of insects will find their way in, which is not ideal for the insect-phobe gringos like myself. There are no mosquito nets, and the flies bite here, so be careful. Also, keep the doors closed or the dogs or cat will get in the trash.
The meals were all delicious-and I am quite picky. I had the best black beans here than anywhere else in Costa Rica (and I don't even like beans). Plus the freshly made juices are absolutely divine. The lemon/passion fruit juice was my favorite.
There are a variety of different and friendly farm animals including ducks, bunnies, chickens, sheep, cows, turkeys, etc. so that is an extra treat. We also went on a short hike to a private waterfall on Charles' property that was also very beautiful. Just be careful walking on the river rocks (I slipped). Wear water shoes with good traction on the bottom.
The road to Parrot Hill Ranch is very bumpy and seems like it goes on forever, but it's worth it. I would recommend renting a car that is a 4x4. Don't even bother with the other types of cars. You need a 4x4 in Costa Rica. Look for the signs that say "Nepenthe" when driving in, as Parrot Hill Ranch is on the same road, but all the way at the top (with the best views!).

  • Parrot Hill Ranch is an amazing place! The views of the volcano and the lake and the rolling hills in between have to make this one of the most beautiful places in the country. The accommodations of the second floor were exactly as you see in the pictures. The wood is hand-crafted, beautiful and everything you could want for a relaxing escape.

The animals on the farm are great! Papuga the parrot in the pictures had breakfasts and dinners with us and would great us with an "Hola!" every time he would fly up.

Charlie and his family are most accommodating. I had great communication with Charlie before we arrived to discuss his family preparing meals, taking us on a hike to Cerro Chato, horseback riding, and even shared a dinner with us with a dance performance! We agreed on prices up front, he took care of shopping, and even went to the pharmacy for us when we needed something.

Our group of 7 rented a 12 passenger van to get around Costa Rica. The roads to get to Parrot Hill are gravel, but we managed just fine in the van with out 4x4.

Its an amazing place to spend a vacation, Charlie and his family are very helpful and work hard to make sure you have a great time, and we can't recommend the place enough!

    Response from Charles:

People are enjoying their time here . They enjoy the meals my wife and sister in law prepare. They enjoy the beauty and serenity of this place. They enjoy the wonderful tropical climate here, not to hot not to cold. They enjoy attentive and helpful service by their host family, yours truly. They enjoy the activities and tours easily accessible from here . People are learning to ride horses here and even the experienced riders enjoy the unique trails we have to the waterfalls . They even enjoy my curious and mocking parrot,Papuga, whom we raised from an orphaned chick.
Thank you in advance for enjoying Parrot Hill .

  • This space is a truly unique experience. Charles built this building and all the furniture within with his own hands. Every morning, you awaken to roosters crowing and cows lowing, with the most gorgeous view if you're lucky enough to be in the sky bungalow. Charles and his family are very kind and considerate, and actually did some lovely things to make my birthday (for which I was making this trip with friends) totally breathtaking. I absolutely recommend Parrot Hill to anyone looking for a unique, true farm experience. One word of advice - bring bug spray, as the main house has no screens on the doors or windows and most of us got a lot of bug bites. This is not a criticism of the space, as I expect any house in the rainforest without screens would have this issue. But it's a recommendation for visitors. Buy the fresh milk and eggs from Charles, they are delicious and reasonably priced. Just know that, even if he tells you not to worry about paying for it, that's because he's keeping a running record of what you've bought that you'll be paying at the end of your stay. Again, reasonable - just good to know as you go in to it. And like I say, the prices are more than fair and the fresh milk and eggs is WELL WORTH it - unbelievable what a difference the taste is from grocery store products. The family makes delicious food as Charles mentioned in another review, with breakfast at $8 and dinner at $10 I believe. And if you want to cook yourself, the kitchen is great and the nearby town of La Fortuna has ample grocery stores. But the real draw of this place is the land. Stunning views everywhere you look, a culture of living and working with the land, and nothing but the sounds of wildlife day and night. My favorite thing to do was gaze out the window in the sky bungalow at night, when the huge picture window would be just filled with stars. I felt like the astronaut my child self had wanted to become, floating through space with galaxies as far as the eye could see. This was possible because we were so far from the light pollution of cities, so each bright star was there to see.

  • Charles place is a bit hard to find especially in the dark but once you're there, it's well worth it. The view is breathtaking of the arenal volcano and arenal lake. Charles was hospitable and super helpful in giving us recommendations and directions. We had the entire 2nd floor to ourselves, which had a great kitchen and big windows for the view. The only qualm was that Charles charged each of us for dinner without telling us beforehand (because we arrived in the evening and it was the breakfast meal that was included). Had he told us upfront and asked if we'd want dinner for $10/each beforehand, I would have discussed it with my group. But he mentioned the charge for the first time, the morning we left. You also should have a vehicle, a 4 wheel drive, to get around.

    Response from Charles:

I'm glad this group of 6 young adults had a good time . I wished they would of stayed longer to really get a feel for the area and thereby given a more comprehensive review.
Yes we do charge for meals, they had a triple meat platter with several side dishes, fresh green salad and natural fruit beverages for $10 each. great value on our house meals.
We prepare home cooked, farm fresh, organic, family style meals.
Good food and good accommodations make for happy experiences.
Best wishes from Parrot Hill ,

  • Staying at Parrot Hill Ranch was special in so many ways. We stayed in the pleasantly rustic ground level suite. Charlie extended such genuine warmth and compassion! We were in awe of the gentle manner in which he and his family reside on this peaceful property. The little pens of ducks and chickens amidst the stunning pink "queen of the night" bushes is a beautiful sight. Caring for the animals on the ranch seems to happen almost effortlessly, with ease and with love, and guests have the option to observe, or not. For us, despite being out and about a lot, catching glimpses of daily life here highly enriched our day-to-day experience. We appreciated the availability of FRESH eggs and milk from the ranch. Bantam, Cornish, russet, and turkey eggs were all equally delicious! The milk made the best mugs of hot chocolate! We utilized and enjoyed the many "extras" in the kitchen, including the large electric skillet, rice-cooker, sandwich-maker, extra-large kitchen sink (for hand-washing). The hot-water shower is THE best, you'll see! We liked the practical features including abundant shelving around the bathroom sink, a place to hang our clothes, a lovely "study" table, lots of outlets for technology, and rocking chairs and bar stools on the patio (used upstairs patio too). After dark, peaceful nights on a good bed with nice bedding, it was glorious to receive the bright light and fresh mountain air through the many open windows. We were entertained by the friendly parakeet and parrot, Howie and Papuga. We were served very delicious meals including yummy FRESH everything: salsa, cheese, tortilla chips, and lemongrass tea. We LOVED the close proximity to El Castillo for groceries, the EcoZoo, Butterfly Garden, good restaurants, yoga, and massage just down the road. We were able to purchase the fresh food we needed in El Castillo including yogurt, cheese, ice-cream, vegies/fruits, and whole grain bread too! We easily managed without a vehicle for quite a few days and found the uphill walk to Parrot Hill Ranch to be wonderful exercise (and we are in our late 50s). We rented a vehicle for a portion of the time, to visit further destinations. And we used the 8 a.m. bus service from El Castillo to get to the fabulous trails at the Observatory Lodge and the National Park, which was quick and easy. Charlie's son took us horseback riding along the mountain ridge, and to a waterfall where we could swim. Starry skies and fire flies at night, amazing views of volcanoes and the lake by day, and waterfalls right on this property. It's such a pretty, quiet, and convenient location and Charlie is a very generous, helpful and knowledgeable host!! LOTS more was offered that I haven't even mentioned!
