About this listing

The Schneider Residence is a grand adobe estate on two acres in the hills above the San Francisco East Bay Area. At 1000 feet elevation the property offers a panoramic view of the valley below, the mountains to the east, and the Carquinez Straits.

The space

Stupendous views, Luxury Linens, Hot Tub, Jacuzzi Tub in master bath, sauna, pool table, piano, wifi, satellite tv. Very private in hills above St Marys College in Lafayette Ca. Equidistant between San Francisco and the Napa Wine Region. Amazing sunrise and sunset no extra charge.
Commanding view of the Diablo Valley from 1000ft elevation. Our quiet country road is only ten minutes from highway 24. Close to shopping, restaurants and entertainment.
The house is built of genuine adobe, designed to take in the amazing ridgetop views. Paved patios surround the house. There are four private bedrooms (2 with king beds, one with a twin, and one with a queen). There is an additional sleeping loft which has a king. The loft opens to a deck above the gardens.
The house is comfortable and homey with Early California Mission decor. There is a full size bear in the living room under the spiral staircase as well as a real bear rug in the loft. (We did not kill them!) We have two wood burning fireplaces usable when the hills surrounding the house are green.
The gardens are kept in bloom all year providing the deer haven't recently invaded. Some of the animals in the canyon include deer, turkeys, raccoons, fox, and many birds including quail. There are friendly resident outdoor cats; Buster, Posey. (They are allowed very limited access inside when we are here.) We enjoy having guests bring their dog along to bark at the deer and keep them out of the gardens!
Al fresco dining is encouraged with six tables on various patios and numerous patio heaters. Propane provided free of charge for the outdoor fire pit as well as large BBQ.

My family had a wonderful time during our stay - the house had plenty of room for 9 of us, the property is lovely, the view is wonderful, and Karen was a great host. We stayed here due to the proximity to Berkeley and easy access to the BART to SF, but the town of Lafayette is very nice and well worth exploring, too.

Karen's place is absolutely stunning and perfect for hosting a small and intimate wedding like ours. The house has this 360-degrees panoramic view of the rolling hills; elegant and rustic landscape of herbs succulents and many more. Our wedding party were able to stay overnight and get ready onsite. The deck which has gorgeous sunset view can hold about 20 people seated for ceremony; guests can mingle and walk around the house and there's so much to see, outdoor and indoor. The backyard is good for about 50 people to dine at the same time. the lights in the backyard make dinner so romantic. Aside from the endless list of things that this house has to offer, Karen is a wonderful host- she helped answer many of our vendors' inquiries out of their personal time. She personally checks the whole place to make sure the site is perfect and ready for the next guests. I am so happy and grateful because of the stay at her place and plan to come back in the future.

Response from Karen:
Rachel communicated well over the months of planning and left the house in perfect condition despite the beautiful affair she hosted on the estate. We limit the day guests to 50, so her wedding was just the right size. Best wishes Rachel and JJ.

Karen's house is an amazing get away nestled in the hills of Lafayette. You have a near 360 degree view of the surrounding area while you relax in the comforts of the Schneider Residence. It was great for our purposes.

The view is extraordinary! And the patios are magical. We rented the home for a company retreat and that's exactly what it felt like- a lovely retreat from the busy world only miles away. City lights at night were beautiful

Stunning house with magnificent views and landscaping. We came here for a family gathering and everyone had a wonderful time. We very much so enjoyed relaxing in the pool during the day and the hot tub in the evenings. I would recommend staying here.

Karen was extremely accommodating of a few changes we needed to make to our booking and, although we never met face-to-face, we felt very welcome and really appreciated the personal touches and extra effort that Karen put into making our stay special. She even put out a vase of red, white and blue flowers with some prosecco to help us celebrate July 4th. The house itself was fantastic, and we made full use of all of the patios to follow the sun and enjoy the incredible views.

My husband and I are natives of the East Bay and designed and built this home. We are excited to share our love for this house and the neighborhood with guests.
