If you are looking for a chill, relaxed picturesque location, Juan' s place is the place to go. Not super touristy, which is my favorite. Reading the reviews someone mentioned no hot water. We did have hot water, but not super hot, which you don't need when it's 80 degrees outside. Do your research before you travel. Punta Uva was recently added to the city's water system, the water does not have much pressure or heat...but you really it's perfectly refreshing. The home could comfortably fit 8 people, maybe 10. Outdoor kitchen was nice and had the kitchen essentials. But yet again, this is a rental property in the Caribbean, you have your essentials, not a Martha Stuart kitchen. Mosquitos, again you are in the Caribbean, expect Mosquitos and bring repellent with high percentages of deet. Master bed was comfortable. I loved hanging in upstairs hamoack and listening to the waves at night. We saw Sloth in tree, but no monkey. The Caribbean side of CR, Punta Uva, are not over developed tourist spots, don't expect to find big restaurants and hotels, which is so nice. Everyone's very nice in the city and welcoming. The beach is literally across the way from the house. The beach isn't very populated. There are some venders with pizza, empanadas, fruit, and pan con cajeta on the beach, but if you're planning to hang on the beach for a while, you may want to take snacks. Make sure to have colons when visiting the Caribbean side, it will make life easier and cheaper. I can't wait to go back. I loved the house, perfect for a family reunion or just romantic getaway. We visited in May. Once it gets dark around 5-530, it's pitch black, highly recommend to take a flashlight with you everywhere.

My family and my sisters family stayed at Juan's beach home together - 4 adults and 4 kids. I had read all the reviews to be prepared for our trip. We are used to rustic cottage vacations in northern Ontario and were prepared for the bugs, but we were pleasantly surprised that there were very few mosquitos, and only at night, betwen 5:30-6 pm. Sleeping was very pleasant with the sliding doors open and just the mesh curtains over the doorway. We could hear the ocean and feel the soft Caribbean breeze at night, and were usually so tired from the day's activities that we were in bed by 9 pm, which was a good thing because we got an early wake up call every morning from strange and exotic birds, howler monkeys, frogs and insects...jungle music. The neighbours dog often barked in the wee hours of the morning, but we're pretty tolerant people (with noisy kids), so we didn't mind, and finally decided that the barking was a good early warning system at night for any passers by to keep walking. Best restaurant, in our opinion, was Chile Rojo in Puerto Viejo. But we also cooked a lot of our own meals and were able to do so with the gas stove top, toaster oven and microwave. We felt safe with Alvaro, Sue and family on the property, and they respected our privacy at all times. The best feature of Juan's place was the location. The house is surrounded by jungle and right on the best Caribbean beach in Costa Rica. We spent most of our time right out front of the house swimming and snorkelling. We also rented bikes from Alvaro and Sue and rode into town with the kids, but you do need to be careful because there are no bike paths and there is the occasional aggressive driver. There was some rain, but mostly at night, and we enjoyed listening to it fall on the roof while we slept and the wildlife seemed to be more active the morning after a rainfall. Over all, we had an excellent experience at Juan's beach house. We planned for rustic living and were pleasantly surprised by the very positive, cheerful energy in the house and neighbourhood. We plan to return soon.

Great house, gardens and location, right on the beach. Juan could not have been more helpful and Alvaro & Sue on site were lovely. House is well equipped and perfect for Caribbean beach living.

We have just spent most tremendous Christmas and New Year at Punta Juancito. The setting is incredible- the garden is gorgeous and extensive and just metres from the Caribbean Sea. Other reviews have said the same but it's hard really to do justice to how special this place is with just photos. The house is spacious and well appointed, with beautiful art work, comfortable beds covered in mosquito nets, two bathrooms as well as an outside shower and a great indoors/outdoors kitchen. There's only a small electric grill but we bought a small basic BBQ that we've left behind for future guests. The housekeepers and their young family are friendly and helpful, even bringing coconuts at breakfast time on occasion. Alvaro also offers the best deal locally for bike hire. We spent a month in Costa Rica in total and saw so much wildlife but nothing compares to the close encounters with sloths and howler monkeys, three species of toucans, woodpeckers, morphos, iguanas, frogs, snake (just the one on the driveway!), agoutis, lizards, geckos and so much more in the garden. There are bugs too so do be prepared for that; the coils sold in local supermarkets work a treat to keep them at bay in the evening. Watch out for strong currents in the sea immediately outside the house when the water's high. It's worth a walk along to the sheltered side of the point to swim safely with children or snorkel or kayak.

We spent 4 nights in Puerto Viejo and we're enjoying the spacious house, the amazing view on the Caribbean Sea, the monkey family crossing the garden, the slot hanging in the tree, the cooking in the kitchen, the silence and the few steps to the sea to take a swim... When driving back from Puerto Viejo to Punta Uva, we felt like coming come.. it's a true Little paradise

Plenty of room for 4 of us. Great location. Monkey and slot in the garden. Was good to have housekeeper right there. Kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. Good spot for snorkeling. We went snorkeling to Cahuita National Park, but we could see much more by the house.
