  • Juan's house was exactly what we were looking for in Costa Rica. We had stayed a few nights prior in a nearby house up the road, and all of my friends and I like Juan's place better! If you're looking for a relaxing, charming, vacation house right near the beach, then stay here.

The beach (basically private) is literally a 30 second walk from your front door. There is very little actual beach since the tide comes up to the tree line for most of the day, but walk a few feet to the left or to the right and you're set! While we were there, there were only a few other couples/families using the beach, which made it our own piece of private paradise!

There are two hammocks (one upstairs and one downstairs) which we made very good use of, and the downstairs eating area is exquisite! A huge hand carved table sits underneath a beautiful light fixture made from the local driftwood. The kitchen was completely stocked and had everything we might need while we were there (even a cheese grater)! The upstairs bedrooms get a beautiful, cool breeze coming off the ocean at night, but the downstairs bedrooms stays a bit warmer. We did have a few crabs join us and plenty of beetles flying around the lights, but we quickly learned that this is a standard for any Costa Rican open-air homes.

The WiFi worked well while we were there (even enough to FaceTime a friend once).

Our caretakers (Suje and Alvaro) didn't speak any English but were extremely helpful. One night during a storm, the power went out and Alvaro was there immediately to help us and look for battery powered flashlights and lanterns. I was able to communicate with him because of my limited Spanish, but someone with no Spanish knowledge might have a bit of a hard time.

There are very few things that warrant a criticism about this place. You can walk 5 minutes both to a restaurant (not very frequented while we were there, but still operating) and a grocery store (has most things you would need). It is a short drive into town and the surrounding communities of Playa Cocles and Manzanillo.

Thank you, Juan, for letting us stay in your beautiful home! May you have the best of luck in the future.

OH! And the bathroom has one of those showers that feels like a waterfall. IDEAL.

  • Staying in Juan's house for 10 nights was a lovely but rustic experience. Although I never actually met Juan, he was easy to get in touch with and the lines of communication were great! The best qualities about this house is location, location, location! Falling asleep to the sound of the waves was extraordinary.
The main issue we had with the house were the windows without screens. There is no AC, but there are nice glass sliding doors that open up to the balcony from the bedrooms that have no screens on them. In fact, none of the windows in the upstairs bedrooms have screens. Unfortunately we were so bombarded with insects, that the mosquito nets over the beds were not suffice, therefore we kept the sliding doors closed. With that being said there was little to no air circulation, when it could have been wonderful to feel the ocean breezes. Also, I just want to clarify that this is my 5th trip to Costa Rica, so I am quite accustomed to the insects, but without screens there was an abundance of them in the bedrooms.
My other issue was that we were not properly equipped for 10 days. There were no dish towels, no one to take out the garbage (especially when you can't flush your toilet paper down the toilet,) no cleaning products to clean the house, and the upstairs bathroom toilet seat is broken. We did reach out to Juan for fresh bath towels 5 days into our stay, and he had the property manager give them to us promptly. I just feel that with the daily maintenance this house needs due to the fact that the jungle creates issues constantly, it would be nice to have a house keeper come in and freshen things up, and take out the garbage a few times during a long stay.
I would recommend this house for a short stay for those who enjoy rustic living. Being next to the beach was the highlight.

  • Absolutely perfect! We stayed at Juan's house with 2 families and kids ranging in age from 3 months to 12 years and ALL of us loved it! The pictures give a good idea of the house, but real life is even better. The yard is gorgeous and the beach is beautiful and quiet with usually calm waters. We enjoyed our time with our kids spending hours exploring the beach, playing in the water, climbing coconut & sea grape trees, snorkeling and playing in the sand. Our kids also found plenty to explore in and around the house during our one morning of rain. We explored the area (from Manzanillo to Puerto Viejo) on our 4th day and decided that Juan's house was by far the best option we could have found and Punta Uva was the most attractive beach location. We were so thankful (relieved!) that we hadn't chosen another option. The caretakers that live in the small house at the back of the property were very kind, always available, quiet and friendly. The house was very neat and clean. The kitchen was well stocked (fridge/freezer, gas range, toaster oven, rice cooker, coffee maker, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, can opener, grater, cutting board, etc.). We cooked all of our own meals for 5 days. Drinking water was provided. All beds had mosquito nets. Mosquitos were pesky but not a deterrent to enjoying our time (bring bug spray, etc.). A small grocery was available at walking distance with everything else easily accessible within a 5-10 minute drive. Internet connection was very good. TV was there, but we never even attempted to use it because we were too busy enjoying our surroundings! We had booked for 4 nights and requested an extra night at the last minute, which was graciously arranged by Juan. Our only regret was having to leave! Thanks, Juan! We hope to make it back!

  • We really enjoyed our stay! Juan was a very thoughtful host, offering assistance before we arrived and checking in via email during our stay.

The house is in an excellent location and the property is very pretty. The house was very clean and well-screened in. It had all the attributes we were looking for in a rental. The description online was accurate.

The house is on a beautiful beach. In addition, there were howler monkeys in the trees, beautiful butterflies in the yard and a sloth in a nearby tree.

We would definitely stay here again.

  • We had a great time in Juan's beautiful, spacious beach house! One of the most beautiful beaches in town is right in front of the house! Juan was very flexible with check in and check out times, the house was clean and well equipped. It's a little off the beaten path, so a flash light is a good idea when walking home at night. A little supermarket is nearby, also a beach restaurant. The housekeepers are super friendly, so are the neighbors. Would definitely go there again, we were sad when we left the house. Thank you for everything, Juan!

Gracias Juan

  • Spectacular location. Some of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in the area are right at your doorstep, literally. Monkeys and coconuts in your yard. Local popular swimming and surf spots a few minutes walk a way. Gorgeous trail nearby that will take you to miles of endless beaches all the way to Manzanillo. Restaurant with great food just a two minute walk down the street. Juan's place is private, comfortable and adequately equipped. The balcony is perfect for relaxing in a hammock, but can be a bit tricky for young children (toddlers/crawling infants). The housekeepers who live on the premises are always available if you need anything and yet very respectful of your privacy.
