Poolside room 2, 71 Pedlar St Galle

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Pedlar Street, Galle, Southern Province 80000, Sri Lanka

71 Pedlar St is located in the heart of the historic Galle fort, a UNESCO world heritage site. 71 has been beautifully restored into a light and spacious villa. Located close to all Galle fort’s shops, restaurants and bars, 71 is a perfect base to explore Galle from.

The Space

A 19th Century villa, 71 retains many original features, including the arched doorways in the entrance hallway and in the open-plan dining and lounge room. As you look beyond, you will see the cool waters of the pool within the central courtyard. The relaxed seating area surrounding the pool, including a large daybed, is great for reading, sunbathing or for simply lounging after a walk around the ramparts. The villa has 3 double bedrooms and one single room, all of which are air-conditioned and en-suite. All rooms are decorated with tasteful fabrics and fine white linen. Two of the rooms overlook the pool whilst the other two, overlook a small well-tended garden at the back of the property.

The Neighborhood

71 is ideally located for evening strolls on the ramparts, being just minutes away from access to the rampart walls. There are also many great shops, cafes and resturants on our doorstep. Some of these include La Clochette, a French bakery and Pedlar's Inn opposite the house. For shopping, visit Souk 58, 58 Church St, two blocks down from 71, for a fantastic range of homeware, clothing and soft furnishings. The Vintage Poster Shop, also on Church St. has a great range of images, posters, and postcards from dating from 1960's onwards. The fort is also well-known for being a centre for jewellery shopping, Laksana, on Lighthouse St has an amazing range of precious and semi-precious gems and jewels.
When you want to leave the fort and explore the many beautiful beaches along the south coast, just jump in a Tuk-Tuk and head along the beach road. The crystal waters of Unawatuna, Wijaya and Weligama are all to be found within 25 minutes.

Getting around

Tuk-tuks are a plenty in the fort for short journeys, otherwise there are buses and a train station 5 minutes from the main fort entrance.

  • We really enjoyed our stay with Eve and her family in their guesthouse in the middle of Galle fort. The place was amazing and they have done a great job renovating it. The pool was a relief in such hot weather and the room comfortable and clean.

Eve and her family were very welcoming and great to chat with about their experiences in Sri Lanka.

Nice to meet you all and myself and Kim will definitely recommend people come and stay with you.

  • We really enjoyed our stay with Eve, Chris & little Sophia. Wonderful villa and very friendly family. Spacious bathroom, comfortable bed, and refreshing pool. Great location in the heart of the Fort. We especially appreciated the local recommendations for our evenings out!

  • 71 Pedlar Street is a stunningly beautiful little oasis of calm in a beautiful street of the beautiful old fort of Galle. After a long trip from Colombo to arrive through the door to be welcomed by Eve, the gorgeous pool and even a freshly made banana smoothy was a little like entering heaven!

As Galle can be a bit of a heat trap within the fort walls, having a pool made a huge difference. The rooms were exceptionally beautiful as well. Clean, light, airy and very comfortable. Even the lighting was a work of art in itself. The photos don't fully do it justice!

Breakfast was also great and a good start for the day exploring the fort and it's surroundings. In fact we were surprised at how close the local beaches were - it's only a short tuktuk ride should you want to escape the city and enjoy the beautiful coastline. Of course being in the very heart of the old fort you're spoilt for choice when it comes to food, with many great restaurants and quirky cafes and bars just around the corner.

Everyone was helpful and very accommodating and it felt as if we were among friends - this is no anonymous resort or bland hotel. All in all, wonderful people in a wonderful place. We wish them every success and highly recommend a stay with them. You won't be disappointed! Thoroughly recommended!

Having only just moved out to Sri Lanka ourselves, we are keen to share our growing knowledge of the south with fellow travellers. We love the simple things in life-good company, good food and the odd good bottle of wine! The villa is family owned and is a wonderfully serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of Galle-we love it here and are enjoying sharing the space with guests from all over the world.
