About This Listing
There is plenty of room. Not pictured is space heater & fan to get your room just right! With a "valet" also to place even a large suitcase.
There is a special feeling here, welcoming, warm, a real home setting with all the amenities. This room is filled with "stumptown" and Oregon favorites, infrared heat in the chill and AC when warmer. Guests share a large bathroom on the main floor with extra, extra towels and a 50gal hot water heater.
Outside you may see a hummingbird or two up close. Throughout the year there are fragrant, beautiful, even tropical flowers.
Just outside your room is a small fridge (late night munchies?), library, board & card games; downstairs a beverage "bar" for tea, coffee, cider, etc. There is also a light continental breakfast each morning. And knowing me, there may be sweets somewhere ... baked or bought.
Access is a breeze with a code key pad on the front door (no keys). Late nights are fine; guests have always been respectful of others already sleeping.
My house is yours to enjoy ... hot tub, washer/dryer (for guests staying 7+ days, once weekly), glass front wood burning stove, serene gardens, piano and a wonderful stocked kitchen. You can nap in a lounge recliner outside in "my eden" or next to the fire inside. A little more about outside ... did I mention a 2 person hot tub, fire pit, and fountains.
I love to see my guests cooking up tasty meals; it's even better when guests enjoy a candlelight dinner in the dining room. You can also enjoy hundreds of movies and Netflix.
If I happen to be in a show, I'll try for complimentary tickets for guests.
Interaction with Guests
I have to say, for a guy who works from home I'm a busy man! Sometimes I'm able to be home to chat, share stories, and most of all laugh with my guests. And other times I am rushing between auditions, rehearsals, performances, social engagements, or simply creating in my craft design room. OH! And of course, karaoke is one of my passions (singing that is)!
This IS the location!
Walk to the awesome, hip, groovy, "Portlandia Style" neighborhood of the Mississippi District or to the Alberta Arts District in a few minutes by car or bike ... for shopping, galleries, food, coffee, and other crazy little shops.
10 minutes on MAX LightRail into downtown for everything you could want to see. MAX runs miles in several directions from my house to all over the PDXMetro area. AND directly to/from the airport and practically my front door!
Bike trails and paths run both north and south from the house ... I might even have a couple of mountain bikes to lend out.
There is plenty of safe street parking right out in front of the house.
Car, lightrail, biking or walking. You will have plenty of options getting exactly where you want to go from the convenience of my place in NoPo!
As we say here ... "plane to train!" Lightrail can literally take you from baggage claim to my house! And that means whether you arrive by plane, train, OR even bus you're connected right to your accommodations.
Other Things to Note
** The stairs are just a little narrow and a tad steep compared to most ... typical old craftsman.
** In an effort to be mindful of energy use, I keep the common areas of the house on the cooler side in the winter as most guests are out and about. Each room has an infrared heater as well and AC. In the summer it can get a little warm but the common room AC also works great. I ask all guests to turn off lights, heaters, and AC when out.
** I make every effort to keep the pets out of the entire upstairs. If you do have allergies, please just give me heads up. :)
Only that you relax and respect, enjoy comfort to cleanliness, and think of my home as a wonderful hideaway that you would love to tell friends about.
* Please drink alcohol responsibly both at the house and in our beautiful city!
** Smoking is allowed outside on a very large covered and heated back porch. I am a smoker.
Gary's home was very welcoming and comfortable. I really enjoyed our stay! We didn't arrive until late but Gary sent me the door code and told use how to find our room. Parking was a cinch and being so close to the MAX was really convenient. In the morning's Gary set out a cereal bar, some other breakfast items to get you started. We really enjoyed the area. A short walk will get you to Mississippi Street which has some great restaurants in bars. I highly recommend checking out the area
Gary is so incredibly kind and welcoming. This airbnb goes way beyond anything else I have ever experienced. It's like a true bnb with coffee, tea and cereal left out in the morning and lots of great signage everywhere so you know where things are, what is expected, etc. I highly recommend this charming little spot. Gary is a gem!
Second time there - so: it was all terrific. Little snacks all over, plenty of coffee, tea, hot water available, very cozy room with great mattress.
Gary is a wonderful host! He is very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We didn't get to spend too much time in the house (too busy exploring Portland!) but we loved staying in our "stumptown" room which was very cozy and the perfect size for us. Everything was clean and tidy and we liked that there was a breakfast bar for the guests to enjoy in the morning. This is definitely a great place to stay while you visit Portland!
I'd like to echo the other positive reviews and say that I had an excellent stay! Gary is a wonderful host, who is exceedingly kind, and is clearly committed to making sure his guests have a wonderful stay. Gary is great for offering tips for Portland and is just a nice guy to have around (he made chocolate banana muffins for us an example)!
The room itself was small but included everything I needed. The place had plenty of towels, and a great cold breakfast.
The house is within spitting distance of the Yellow Line MAX station at N Prescott so getting into downtown Portland is an easy 20 min trip, and one can switch to the Red Line to get to the airport too. The place is also a 10 minute walk from Mississippi Avenue, a really awesome corridor with great food and nightlife.
Staying with Gary is my first Airbnb experience and it is simply wonderful. (Gary called his house A Simple Place, LOL.)
The neighborhood is quiet yet interesting, it is next to N Mississippi Ave, which has a lot of place to see and wander. (My personal favorite food cart the Big Egg, Art Gallery the Lowell and the brunch place Gravy.)
I was thinking spend more time with the host on my next Airbnb experience. Gary gave me a lot privacy during my stay yet I feel like I am little bit rude not to express my appreciation to his kindness.
So THANK YOUUUUU Gary!!!

About the Host, Gary Wayne
Equal parts Frank Sinatra, "McGayver," and Ben Stiller ... got your attention?
I'm a renaissance man ... school teacher, behavioral health therapist, small business owner, gardener, building/thinker/crafter, and most passionate as an actor for 30 years. I love my life and know that I'm a lucky guy!
I really enjoy meeting new people, visiting new entertainment venues and I am a self-proclaimed karaoke king. I'm also an avid road trip, travel, get me to the ocean (river, lake, stream, pool!), bike, hike, diggin' in the dirt and throwing on a tux kind of guy.
My home is my castle! My 2 pets, of the dog variety, are my immediate family. I'm also the caregiver for my father, a quiet and kind little guy also named Gary; this is really his 2nd chance at life.
I take extreme pride in my home (but I'm partial) and I welcome everyone who visits with a "make yourself at home, relax & enjoy," invitation and a big smile. I do love to talk, no offense when you gotta go! I also consider myself a very genuine, caring, respectful, FUNNY, corny, and classy gentleman ... with a goofy, unpredictable, and even mildly devilish side.
With more than 200 bookings and over 300 guests, YOU are welcome anytime!
