There is a special feeling here, welcoming, warm, a real home setting with all the amenities. Lush gardens, landscape, hot tub, an oasis to relax and maybe see a hummingbird or two up close. Throughout the year there are fragrant, beautiful, even tropical flowers. How about falling asleep in front of a warm fire ... my home is yours.
Just outside your room is a small library, board & card games, mini fridge, and fixens for tea & coffee. Light continental breakfast items each morning. And knowing me, there will be sweets somewhere ... baked or bought.
I guess "my home is yours" means feel free to ... cook, wash/dry, watch a movie in the living room or your own room (tons of movies and an extra portable dvd player), play the piano, nap in a lounge recliner outside in "eden." Speaking of outside ... did I mention a 2 person hot tub, fire pit, and fountains.
Guests share a large full bath on the main floor ... although a little 4 legged cutie might try to sneak in.
If I happen to be in a show, I'll try for complimentary tickets for guests.
I love being both home and out. I have a crazy schedule and one never knows when I'm home or not, including me.
I can be an early morning person but I'm always a late, late night owl.
Warning: If you get me talking ... well ... I'm interesting at least. "I got a million of 'em!" But I'm also a pretty deep and reflective guy too.
This IS the location!
Walk to the awesome, hip, groovy neighborhood of the Mississippi District or to the Alberta Arts District in a few minutes by car or bike ... for shopping, galleries, food, coffee, and other crazy little shops.
10 minutes on MAX LightRail into downtown for everything you could want to see. MAX runs miles in several directions from my house to all over the PDXMetro area. AND directly to/from the airport and practically my front door!
Bike trails and paths run both north and south from the house ... I might even have a couple of mountain bikes to lend out.
Car, lightrail, biking or walking. You will have plenty of options getting exactly where you want to go from the convenience of my place in NoPo!
As we say here ... "plane to train!" Lightrail can literally take you from baggage claim to my house! And that means whether you arrive by plane, train, OR even bus you're connected right to your accommodations.
** The stairs are just a little narrow and a tad steep compared to most ... typical old craftsman.
** I make every effort to keep the pets out of the entire upstairs. If you do have allergies, please just give me heads up. :)
Gary is a wonderful host and I enjoyed my one night stay in the main floor bedroom. He does open up his home to make a guest feel comfortable and his pets are just as friendly. I was there during the snow and sleet. I wanted to make sure I could get t the airport on time via the trains. A quick ride on the Yellow Line to the Red Line to the Airport was under 30 minutes.
Are you looking for a place that is as eclectic as Portland? Are you looking for a place with puppies and kitties? Are you looking for a place with a personable host and other friendly guests? Well, youfound the right place at Simple Place with Gary. Gary's home is very convenient to transportation, restaurants and funky shopping. Everything at the house is very assessable like coffee, cake and TV. If we come back to Portland, we know where we are staying.
Gary was a superb host even in the midst of the unexpected. We didn't know when we were going to arrive and Gary was able to accommodate many of our needs. He has a nice full kitchen and we got to really cook up a storm! He has many little 4 legged pets, one being our favorite is LIttle Man who'd just come into our room for cuddles every.day. When we stayed, the unexpected portland polar vortex came and gary made sure to keep the heat on in the bathroom and get the fire going in the living room. The area is nice near Mississippi, lots of restaurants & bars & coffee shop. The tub is nice! Thanks so much for being such a great host!
Without a guestroom of our own, our out of town guests have been historically put up in hotels. Which, while fine, has always felt a little impersonal, a little as if we were abandoning them. When I discovered Airbnb then found Gary's place in my neighborhood *angels singing*-- it was the perfect solution for my Dad's visit. Gary's home and yard are so welcoming and calming, that getting Dad settled in took nothing more than crossing the thresh hold. My father is usually awake by 4 am - he simply cannot sleep. While staying at Hang Your Hat - It's Like Home, Dad slept well until 6:30 - 7:00. I do not want to throw around the word "miracle" too loosely but . . . he also enjoyed the comfortable living room with its' fire place. This is where Dad and Gary's cat spent mornings reading the Oregonian until Dad's night owl daughters picked him up for adventure. The neighborhood boast several food venues as well as convenience stores (for getting the morning paper, etc.) but what Dad loved the most (location wise) was the convenience to the Max. And while Dad enjoyed Gary's hospitality and homelike visit, Gary's pets caused him to leave town thinking he needed to get a cat for his own home. Thank you so much Gary for opening your rooms. This allows us to have our Dad visit and not feel we are abandoning him in whatever hotel. No offense to any hotel this is just a better solution to the "no-guestroom / loved-ones-are-visiting" problem.
Gary and his dogs and cats are so friendly! He welcomed us with a hot living room (warmed by the woodstove) and cookies. The bed in his room was comfortable and clean, and the whole house was carefully decorated.
There are a few other people on the premises, including three who live in separate apartments, but they kept to themselves and we hardly saw them. There was another airbnb guest as well - and he was from three blocks from where we live in Canada, which was a funny coincidence.
The location of Gary's house is perfect. It is half a block from the MAX to downtown, and a short walk from N Mississippi and N Alberta - our favourite neighbourhoods from the trip. It was so convenient!
Gary's hospitality makes the stay very comfortable. Thanks, McGayver. We had a great time!
The room was clean and warm on a cold Portland evening. He communicated with me great as we arrived late and he was working. It was a great simple stay and we will look to stay with Gary again.
Gary was such a great host! You have to go and stay with him! His home is lovely, very cozy, eclectic and full of charm :) we had an absolute pleasure staying with Gary! We enjoyed lovely muffins prepared by Gary, an amazing hot tub, many games, lovely porch etc. The place is super convenient, and in the great neighborhood. Go! :)
