There is plenty of room. Not pictured is space heater & fan to get your room just right! With a "valet" also to place even a large suitcase.
There is a special feeling here, welcoming, warm, a real home setting with all the amenities. This room has a small desk & chair, standing wardrobe, infrared heat in the chill and a breezy fan when warmer. Guests share a large bathroom on the main floor with extra, extra towels.
Outside you may see a hummingbird or two up close. Throughout the year there are fragrant, beautiful, even tropical flowers.
Just outside your room is a small fridge (late night munchies?), library, board & card games; downstairs a beverage "buffet" for tea, coffee, cider, etc. There is also a light continental breakfast each morning. And knowing me, there will be sweets somewhere ... baked or bought.
Access is a breeze with a code key pad on the front door (no keys). Late nights are fine; guests have always been respectful of others already sleeping.
My house is yours to enjoy ... hot tub, washer/dryer (for guests staying 7+ days, once weekly), wood burning glass front stove, serene gardens, piano and a wonderful stocked kitchen. You can nap in a lounge recliner outside in "my eden" or next to the fire inside. A little more about outside ... did I mention a 2 person hot tub, fire pit, and fountains.
I love to see my guests cooking up tasty meals; it's even better when guests enjoy a candlelight dinner in the dining room. You can also enjoy hundreds of movies and Netflix.
If I happen to be in a show, I'll try for complimentary tickets for guests.
Interaction with Guests
I have to say, for a guy who works from home I'm a busy man! Sometimes I'm able to be here to chat, share stories, and most of all laugh with my guests. And other times I am rushing between auditions, rehearsals, performances, social engagements, or simply creating in my craft design room. OH! And of course, karaoke is one of my passions (singing that is)!
This IS the location!
Walk to the awesome, hip, groovy, "Portlandia Style" neighborhood of the Mississippi District or to the Alberta Arts District in a few minutes by car or bike ... for shopping, galleries, food, coffee, and other crazy little shops.
10 minutes on MAX LightRail into downtown for everything you could want to see. MAX runs miles in several directions from my house to all over the PDXMetro area. AND directly to/from the airport and practically my front door!
Bike trails and paths run both north and south from the house ... I might even have a couple of mountain bikes to lend out.
There is plenty of safe street parking right out in front of the house.
Car, lightrail, biking or walking. You will have plenty of options getting exactly where you want to go from the convenience of my place in NoPo!
As we say here ... "plane to train!" Lightrail can literally take you from baggage claim to my house! And that means whether you arrive by plane, train, OR even bus you're connected right to your accommodations.
Other Things to Note
** The stairs are just a little narrow and a tad steep compared to most ... typical old craftsman.
** In an effort to be mindful of energy use, I keep the common areas of the house on the cooler side in the winter as most guests are out and about. Each room has an infrared heater as well. In the summer it can get a little warm but the main room AC works great and there are fans in each room. I ask all guests to turn off lights, heaters, and fans whenever possible.
** I make every effort to keep the pets out of the entire upstairs. If you do have allergies, please just give me heads up. :)
Only that you relax and respect, enjoy comfort to cleanliness, and think of my home as a wonderful hideaway that you would love to tell friends about.
* Please drink alcohol responsibly both at the house and in our beautiful city!
** Smoking is allowed outside on a very large covered and heated back porch. I am a smoker.
Staying with Gary is my first Airbnb experience and it is simply wonderful. (Gary called his house A Simple Place, LOL.)
The neighborhood is quiet yet interesting, it is next to N Mississippi Ave, which has a lot of place to see and wander. (My personal favorite food cart the Big Egg, Art Gallery the Lowell and the brunch place Gravy.)
I was thinking spend more time with the host on my next Airbnb experience. Gary gave me a lot privacy during my stay yet I feel like I am little bit rude not to express my appreciation to his kindness.
So THANK YOUUUUU Gary!!!
Gary was quick and responsive to our booking request and many follow up questions. :) He was accommodating, and made sure that we knew how to get the hot tub fired up so that we could enjoy it during our brief stay. (The hot tub was wonderful!) His house is adorable and comfortable, as was the room. I loved the décor! We were able to travel with our small dog, which worked well. I loved having hot coffee ready to go when we arrived. Also, really enjoyed the "blue heat" in the bathroom. We met Gary briefly in passing, and he was friendly and welcoming. I would have loved to chat more and we would definitely stay again!
Gary was an absolutely wonderful host! His home was so cool and relaxed. Definitely felt like a home away from home. Gary is a great person to chat with and is very helpful. The location is fantastic, though with a home like this you really don't need to go anywhere! It was our pleasure to stay here.
Gary got back to me within an hour about my request to stay at his beautiful home that evening! We got stuck in traffic and ended up arriving a couple hours later than planned. He was flexible with us and was still there to greet us when we arrived. The house is adorable, in a great neighborhood, and very animal friendly which was great for us! Lots of nice little touches made this a very pleasant stay! We will definitely stay with Gary again when we return to Portland! Thanks for everything, Gary!
This listing is the exact reason why I like Airbnb: Friendly, welcoming host, keen on showing his city and telling stories.
The house is nice and has character.
I recommend! I will go back for sure.
Nice to know: There are several rooms available in the same house so you can go in group (this was unclear to me in the description).
Thanks Gary for sharing you home with us. Unfortunately, our stay was short, but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit with you and your beautify warm cozy home and of course the pets!
Would love to been able to stay longer and chat more. Perhaps next time.
Thanks so much for your hospitality!
We liked this place so much the last time, we brought some friends this time around who stayed in this room (see cozy simplicity for our review). Our friends loved the place, the host, the location and from what they've told me, will definitely be making a return visit at some point in the future.

It was such an honor to have you back AND that you are just wonderful people ... so come back again! And Emily, Taylor, and Patrick, it was fantastic to meet you AND share the karaoke stage (even if I did miss 2 of you singing, oops). I would be very happy to host all or any of you anytime! Gary

Equal parts Frank Sinatra, McGyver, and Ben Stiller ... got your attention?
I'm a renaissance man ... school teacher, behavioral health therapist, small business owner, gardener, building/thinker/crafter, and most passionate as an actor for 30 years. I love my life and know that I'm a lucky guy!
I really enjoy meeting new people, visiting new venues, dance, music and I am a self-proclaimed karaoke king. I'm also an avid road trip, travel, get me to the ocean (river, lake, stream, pool!), bike, hike, diggin' in the dirt and throwing on a tux kind of guy.
My home is my castle! My four pets, of the dog & cat variety, are my immediate family. I take extreme pride in my home and welcome everyone who visits with a "make yourself at home" invitation and a big smile. I do love to talk, no offense when you gotta go! I'm also a very kind, caring, respectful, FUNNY, corny, and classy gentleman ... with a goofy, unpredictable, and even mildly devilish side.
With nearly 150 bookings and over 200 guests, YOU are welcome anytime!
