The castle of Montalto in Tuscany is a medieval hamlet with over 1000 years of history, surrounded by woods and farmland in the lovely and unspoiled Chianti hills near Siena.
Ten carefully restored villas and apartments, including a wing of the inner castle, are offered directly by the owner as self-catering accommodations sharing the swimming pool.
With its private chapel and banquet room, the castle is a spectacular venue for weddings and events.

Montalto in Toscana - Torre del Vescovo is a two-story wing of the main castle building, including the original watchtower, and provides a complete medieval castle experience. The remainder of the manor house is occupied by the owners.

The living room has a high beamed ceiling and is adorned with frescoes; it has a dining area, a very large fireplace, an old piano and a television.

There is a separate full kitchen with espresso machine, dishwasher and clothes washer.

Upstairs are found a master bedroom with antique furniture and frescoed walls, with a queen size bed and a large en-suite bathroom with wall shower over the bathtub. There are two more double bedrooms (one with two single beds, one with queen size bed that can be separated into twins) and a bathroom with shower over tub. There is a third bathroom downstairs with a stall shower.

From a landing on the stairs there is access to a balcony that overlooks the valley and leads to a small study within the tower itself, with a single bed. A door in one of the upstairs bedrooms gives exclusive access to ladders to the top of the tower.

From the living room a short flight of stone steps leads to an enclosed private garden, with a stone table and a wisteria-covered gazebo.

Torre del Vescovo is accessed via the upper courtyard, a gravel terrace under a majestic linden tree, which is shared with the tower suite San Martino (1-2 people) — the two can be rented together to provide complete privacy and sleep 8/9 people in all.

The space
The historic Castle of Montalto (see Wikipedia) lies in one of the loveliest and most unspoiled parts of the Chianti area of Tuscany, not far from Siena. It is very centrally located for art touring, an excellent home base for sight-seeing, winery visits and exploring hill towns and back roads.

Torre del Vescovo is a two-story apartment comprising the south wing of the manor house of the castle, including the original watchtower.
A separate facing tower (San Martino) can be conveniently added to accommodate 2 more people, giving full privacy also to the upper courtyard.

Castelnuovo Berardenga, Tuscany, Italy

The area of Tuscany around Montalto Castle is beautiful and peaceful but also very rich in history, art, good food and good wine. With its rich past dating back over one thousand years, the castle provides a truly unique setting for a vacation in Tuscany.

Montalto castle is the ideal home base for interspersing quiet days of rest and relaxation with interesting local excursions, because there is so much within reach: Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Cortona,... This is a great way to get to know a country in depth, and far more relaxing than an exhausting whirlwind tour of Italy.

Whether you are interested in art and culture or want to sample the local food and world-famous Chianti and Brunello wine, or to relax and rejuvenate with a day at a spa, you will find it all in the area surrounding the castle.
There is too much to list in a single page, so we’ve gathered some information and we always try to keep up to date on the many thingsto do in the surroundings, such as concerts, special events, etc.
Simply ask and we will be happy to provide the assistance you may need in planning your vacation.

Montalto Castle has long been family owned, first by the Berardenga family, then Palmieri, and finally by Giovanni and Diana Coda-Nunziante who acquired it from relatives in 1970. Since Giovanni’s death in 2014, Diana carries on with my assistance. I look after our guests’ needs and can give a wealth of information about local opportunities. Like Diana I speak English and Italian, fairly fluent French, some German and a little Spanish. Some of you may remember me from several years ago, when I used to work as receptionist at Montalto before my two children were born. Now I am very happy to be back, as I truly love this place and enjoy meeting the interesting people who come here. Diana is happy, too!
