We enjoyed our stay here while we spent 2 days exploring Big Sur. Kevin's mom was home to welcome us when we arrived in the afternoon, and the room and bathroom were very clean and comfortable. We had easy access to the house through the garage entrance, and Kevin and his mom were home both nights, happily talking with us about what we did that day and recommendations on what to see and do. This is a great place to stay if you're looking for quiet, relaxing accommodations while visiting the Monterey/Big Sur area!
Really great host! We had a very good sleep in this immaculate house. Such a beautiful house and very kind hosts!
House super clean, hosts exceptionally full of grace.
Brand new home. This was my first airBNB. It was a great choice and set me on a course for a lifetime of future stays. The hosts could not have been more gracious. Right balance of friendliness and yet leaving space for privacy.
Kevin was solicitous and friendly via email/txt prior to our arrival; ensuring that we understood the directions & protocol coming into his space.
Once you have checked in & met Kevin (& his Mum, Vivienne), you can leave and arrive by using the garage entrance via a remote.
Based on our personal experiences, Airbnb hosts lie on a spectrum. Down one end are the homestay type of settings, where ‘mi casa es tu casa’ is the vibe---down the other end are those for whom it's seemingly strictly a business arrangement.
For those wanting a crisp rental experience, Kevin offers a room to stay in. He operates his airbnb bedroom and private bathroom as a clearly contracted commercial operation.
He aspires to ‘100% clear communication’. Kevin does make sincere attemps to lay out just what you are getting for your money.
However, there were a few glitches in this in our experience, (which we were able to help Kevin correct), though perhaps there is still a bit more fine tuning in order for the listing to be completely transparent.
It's imporant for guests to understand that they are contractually renting specific spaces from Kevin, with very definite exclusions.
The spaces that are being paid for are:
the water filter tap (in the kitchen),
hot water (from a pre-heated urn in kitchen)
use of the microwave,
use of the toaster oven.
Kevin has commodified additional extras, such as the use of the iron, or the stove, which can be purchased at an hourly rate, in hourly increments.
We were chastised by Kevin for using the louge room area; although this limitation was not specified in the description on his page, he was subsequently very clear that this was a ‘non-rental area’, and that as customers we should be prepared to confine themselves to the designated paid-for areas.
Kevin did not exclude the fridge from the rental space, but there was almost no room at all for our milk and bread. Each time I went into the kitchen, Kevin or his mother would immediately come forward, in a way which made it clear that the kitchen visit was to be supervised, and preferably as brief as possible.
The premises is extremely clean, and exactly as described.
We provided Steve and his wife sincere and warm-heart service, but it was clear that they did not appreciated our effort. Steve first complained to Airbnb Customer Service about our weekend rate, then went on about our additional charges for the non-provided services, such as the use of kitchen, washer and dryer, etc. when the guests must use the the non-provided services. For improvement of my service, I even made some revisions to my Airbnb profile description after I talked with Steve and Airbnb Customer Service representative.
By looking at Steve's suitcase-load of food on the floor as well as his milk, fruits, canned food, leftover food from restaurants, cheese, etc. in our refrigerate, we started to understand why Steve was so uptight about our additional charges. But we tried our best to accommodate him anyway. The fact is that all his perishable food were stored in our refrigerate during their three-nights stay.
Without communicating with me and getting my consent, Steve started to operate his online psychiatric consulting service in our sitting room and dining room in the morning and evening, each session lasted for 2-3 hours. His loud voice with his patients were very unpleasant and intruding to our privacy, and we could not use the spaces when Steve was there to run his business. I had to stop him and told him to move into his room for his business operation. Apparently, Steve did not like it. From this incident, I learned that I should have added another line in my Airbnb house rule: No online psychiatric consulting service in the sitting room and dinning room.
It is a very nice, clear and cozy room. Grandma and Kevin are very kind and considerate. Totally five star for this room. I totally recommend you to rent this room and taste the authentic Chinese breakfast.
