Enjoy this serene, exquisite, private one bedroom Casita in the heart of Westlake just 10 minutes from downtown. The Casita is a small studio set off the homeowners private house. The homeowner originally created the Casita as a quite, meditative writing space. There is a wall of windows that face the woods and invite lots of natural light. The Casita is one room which is apx. 20' x 30' and has a beautiful full sized bed which is topped with a memory foam/down mattress topper. Off the main room is a private deck that overlooks the pool/spa and has a quite sitting area. You are welcome to share the pool with the homeowner. Heating the pool may be arranged for a fee but the homeowner generally does not heat the pool in winter. There is no fee for heating the spa.
The property is located on several private wooded lots which give you the feeling you are out in the woods even though you are very close to town. There are even several well-manicured trails in the woods where you are welcome to walk and a dry creek bed that threads through the property.
The Casita does not have a kitchen, but only the following: a toaster oven, microwave, coffeemaker, tea kettle, Britta filter pitcher, plates, bowls and settings for 4, and small dorm sized refrigerator. Also, there is no phone or TV, as the Casita is more of a retreat space. What you lack in technology, nature more than makes up for. There is however wifi! It is a great space for 1 or 2 people to make their headquarters during large events in Austin. There are two twin inflatable air mattresses (the double thick kind) that may be used and we will take up to 4 people. Over 2 people there is a $20 per person charge per night.
My name is Rana and I manage the property for Gretchen the homeowner and would be happy to answer any of your questions.
This property is not suited for handicapped or people that may have trouble negotiating the steep and rocky terrain.
***Reviews for the "House on the Creek" are relevant to the Casita as far as location and the woods/trails. The "House on the Creek" property is right next door and has now been rented long term. But please read them to get a feel for the property and the host.
$20 per person per night over the first two.
Smoking okay, if outdoors.
Prefer one car per visit, as parking is very tight, no more than 2.
Swimming is shared with the homeowner, no late night swims unless you are quiet.
Guest must sign a waiver to use the pool and hottub.
The homeowner lives in a separate building but on the same property and is in her 70's. So if you want to run around screaming at 3AM in your underwear, play loud music, have a party, this might not be the house for you. That being said she is a lovely person and very young and fun at heart so don't worry about her being too uptight.
There is a wood stove in the Casita - as long as you follow the rules you may use the stove.
3 night Minimum - Formula 1 & ACL
Price reflects a 6% Hotel tax - taxes in the City of Austin run 15% but this home is located in Westlake Hills and is not subject to city taxes
Weekly and monthly rates are possible, please contact to discuss
I've stayed in the Casita several times now!
Always a pleasant and relaxing stay, thanks in great part to the fantastic location of the home and the extremely hospitable nature of Gretchen and Rana!
The Casita is *perfect*. Whether you're working in the city or staying for pleasure, this spot is fantastic. Hidden away in Westlake, you're surrounded by the woody hill-country but still just minutes from downtown and other amenities.
I stayed in February during a relatively chilly week (for this area, at least), but I was more than comfortable in the Casita. Rana made sure to leave the heaters running for my arrival, and the wood-burning stove was an absolute delight to sit next to and work.
Will stay again!
The Casita is such a nice and quiet place to stay. You really don't feel like you are anywhere near a big city, yet you are a 7 minute drive to downtown Austin. Gretchen and Rana are so nice and accommodating. This is a great option for 1-2 people who want to be near downtown but able to escape the quiet and beauty of Austin's hills.
Had a great stay at The Casita. Very close to the city while also tucked away in the hills around Austin in a beautiful area. Highly recommended and will be back the next time I'm in Austin.
Couple of notes about the place:
1. Loved having a wood burning stove!
2. Bathroom was larger than expected.
3. Deck was great for morning coffee and reading.
4. Nice walking trail on the property and a zip line (which we didn't use).
Was also very happy to meet Gretchen and look forward to seeing her again when we are back.

I am both a writer and a foundation director. I have lived on this property for 35 years and the "House on the Creek" is very special to me. It is a house of light and a true delight. From it one can take wonderful walks into the woods. I especially enjoy the property after it rains and the creek bed comes to life.
