Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
The ranch house at Elmwood affords you the ideal place to enjoy 2026 in a spectacular visual setting, located on the grounds of the great 19th century farm together with the restored mansion and historic outbuildings. The ranch house combines the convenience of staying in the environs of the charming historic town of Union with the tranquility of living in the country, and features scenic views from every room.

The space
This house is perfect for a visit with family and friends if you hail from the area, or a beautiful, peaceful, getaway if you come from afar. Our location is an excellent base for a drive, bicycling, or stroll along scenic, winding, country roads with little vehicular traffic. Hiking trails are also close by. We frequently have guests who arrive from hundreds of miles away, with here as their destination. The ranch house is within a short stroll to local businesses which also seek lodging for their visitors. It's a great place to stay while working remotely too, with superior wireless internet upload and download speeds. People from all states, countries, races, religions and political views stay here. Elmwood was built by Thomas Jefferson's best brickmason (William B Phillips) and we do our best to pursue happiness, in our scenic environment, at every opportunity

Guest access
This listing allows access to the entire ranch house which is a roomy 2000 sf. The house is all on one level; there are no stairs. All around this house are multiple acres of landscaped lawns that include a spring fed pond and an octagonal vegetable and cutting garden, which guests are welcome to visit. Guests may fish in the pond for bluegills and largemouth bass. Visitors are keen to photograph the big house from multiple vantage points around the property. The town of Union lies at the foot of the 900 foot driveway and it's historic district, filled with historic homes, churches and log homes, is a pleasant 3 minute stroll away. There is a 10 acre hayfield across the street which contains a fenced enclosure with a 1901 statue of a confederate soldier, erected to honor the Monroe Guard who served in the Va. 27th during the Civil war. There are several notable cemeteries in Union, each within easy walking distance from the house. For example, Green Hill cemetery is on a high hill above the town, and affords a view for many miles. We also a professional website but Air B and B does not allow us to share the name here but you will find it if you search for Elmwoodestate on the internet

Other things to note
Returning and new guests will be pleased to discover that, in July 2025, we added central Air Conditioning to the ranch house! In 2023 we have added a comfortable front porch that adds yet more space to your environment. The ranch house now has two porches.

Neighborhood highlights

Monroe County is a unique place where an older way of life thrives. People here retain old fashioned values of politeness and friendliness. Some folks wave to the occupant in an oncoming vehicle when meeting on a country road. Set amidst a splendid scenic landscape, large cattle farms owned by multi generations of families who settled here in the late 18th or early 19th century continue to thrive. With the mountain scenery, covered bridges, old mills and multitudes of tiny winding roads proliferating in all directions from Union, this is just the place to take a scenic cruise on a either a sunny morning or rainy afternoon.

Where I went to school: U of Southern Ala./U of Maine
My work: Saudi Aramco, US Navy,
After graduation from university in the early 1980s we served in the US Navy and settled in San Diego afterwards. We left the USA in 1991 and worked all over the world for the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), living in various parts of Asia, Europe, The Middle East, and South America until 2013, selecting Elmwood and Monroe County WV as the place to land. We restored circa 1838 Elmwood, a Thomas Jefferson house, and adjacent ranch house, and we continuously improve the acres of gardens and landscape. During the winter we sit by a fire reflecting on the day's achievements. In summer after a long days' work we rest on one of the six porches and watch the sun go down over our spectacular mountain scenery. Having traveled as a lifestyle for more than 35 years including four round- the- world trips and staying in lodging ranging from five dollar a night huts in the jungle to famous 5 star hotels, we are well qualified to provide our guests with a great experience. Our motto is 'Cur Non?'
