Nestling on a wooded hillside, this quiet, cosy, comfortable 18th century 2 bedroom cottage with ample room for 2 or 3 people offers a haven of peace. With walks straight from the doorstep, outdoor enthusiasts will love the famous landscape of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All visitors will also enjoy Pateley Bridge's award-winning village high street and local fresh products, Fountains Abbey, Harrogate Turkish Baths, Dales, Moors, walking, cycling, birds and much more.

The space
The cottage, built in 1776, has a relaxing atmosphere with beams, 2 comfy sofas, wifi, Sky TV, books and a few games. The main bedroom has a double bed, drawers and hanging space and beautiful view over the hills. Small bedroom is snug and either the sofa bed here can be used for 1 person or the room can be used for a cot. Just tell me how you would like the rooms set up for your guests. Fresh bedlinen and towels included. The kitchen is well equipped and has views towards the valley. The bathroom has bath with shower over, washbasin, loo and products. Outside there is a patio with table and chairs, a little garden with some fruit bushes and a bicycle shed at the end of the garden. If your needs are slightly different, please tell us what you need and we may well be able to help.

Main attractions are: walking from the front door e.g. to Pateley or Dacre or to Brimham Rocks or over heather moors ; for long hikes check Nidderdale AONB web site or an OS map. In addition to walking and hiking visitors can also include trekking with llamas or llama farm; Fountains Abbey; Hackforth; Harrogate for Betty's tea shop, Turkish Bath, shops, antique markets & restaurants; Ripon with its Cathedral, Alice in Wonderland connections, 13C origins; Ripon Market Square with Wakeman (town crier - check online for times), ancient streets and friendly pubs. Grassington, Skipton, Burnsall, Brimham Rocks, Appletreewick are also often included in a day out. More active outings could include How Stean Gorge or Stump Cross caverns. Young visitors may enjoy nearby Treetop Nets, Billy Bob's Parlour or possibly Lightwater Valley. Walkers and cyclists would do well to check web sites for Nidderdale AONB and Way of the Roses. More details in the Location section, check our the Hollin Cottage Guidebook.

And pre-school visitors are welcome to say hello to our own sheep, dogs, cat and bees! I'm happy to take you round - just ask me, please. There are several toddler-friendly local attractiosn and pushchiar friendly paths. See the cottage Guidebook.

There's always 10% off 7 nights.
Why? Because so many people love being here and say they will come back, but why not stay a little longer on your first time? Sunshine and lambs!

A few notes about transport.
Cars can easily drive up the unmade track at a steady pace and park on the gravel.
For electric cars we have a charging point.
Motor cycle riders should take note that the cottage is up a steep unmade track which has proved too challenging for big road bikes, even though the track is only about 200 yards long.
If you come by public transport it is best to go to Harrogate train station then the 24 bus which takes just under an hour, and we can usually meet you from Glasshouses bus stop by arrangement in advance. Please check the covid-updated bus timetable and have a mask ready.
You may possibly get groceries delivered by Tesco or Morrison’s please check before you come if you need this facility as everything is more difficult due to covid at the moment.
Some restaurants locally offer take-away service, e.g. pizza or curry, but unfortunately none deliver to the door - you have to go to fetch it.

Where you’ll be

Glasshouses, England, United Kingdom

The photos show the countryside surrounding the cottage. There are a few houses nearby, so we would like our guests to respect their privacy and tranquility.

Pateley Bridge and Bewerley villages.
Civilisation is at hand! Pateley Bridge is 5-10 minutes away by car or bike, or a 20-30 minute stroll along the pleasant footpath by the river. It has an award-winning high street with pubs, cafes, shops, restaurants and a museum, tourist office, boutiques, antique shop, clockmaker's and a laundry with a service wash. There is a pub halfway to Pateley, The Harefield Hall, which can be reached on foot from the riverside path, it's less than one mile away but can be wet underfoot in wet weather. Glasshouses now sadly has no shops or pub.

Walkers can check out the websites of NIdderdale Area of Outstanding Beuaty (AONB); LDWA Nidderdale Way; Pateley Bridge tourist office and Visit-the-dales and many more.

Cyclists can check out the websites of Wayoftheroses; cyclethedales and NIdderdale AONB.

Covid Update to Food and facilities.
Below is a fairly comprehensive outline of what is available locally. However, unfortunately we can't list whether each one is open or closed or has special measures due to covid, sorry! The food shops are all open and visitors must wear a mask and observe social distancing, sanitising etc.

All food shops are open using social distancing measures. The pizza, curry house and fish and chips all offer take away food, but no deliveries. Olley's, the Crown, the Royal Oak in Pateley Bridge, the Bridge and Harefield Hall in Pateley may offer meals indoors when they are allowed to. The Royal Oak at Dacre and the Wellington in Darley may also offer meals indoors. The many tea shops and cafes in Pateley vary in their attitude to opening during the pandemic. The Wellington and the Grantely Arms seem to be offering take-away services during lockdown, but no deliveries.

The Yorke Arms, Michelin-starred restaurant, is a few miles away but has been shut recently.

The Sportsman, which offers very fine local fare, is a couple of miles away on Wath Road and may be open for outside meals.

Vennells restaurant in Masham has been innovative. It's a popular local gourmet fine dining restaurant, expensive and resourceful. They say "the format will return to a Wednesday night 'one dish' and Friday night 2/3 course around the £25/£30pp mark. This will continue for the foreseeable future." It's a half hour drive over the moors and can be beautiful. Please see their website. this could make a welcome alternative to a fancy night out elsewhere.

Places to visit
Fountains Abbey is a few miles away. Ripon has its cathedral and a lively town centre. Harrogate is not far with its upmarket shops, antique shops, Turkish baths and Betty's tea rooms. Airedale and Wharfedale have many beauty spots such as Appletreewick and Bolton Abbey.

Sport facilities.
Nidderdale Leisure Centre is on the outskirts of Pateley and has a beautiful public pool and gym. To enter you need to book in advance on Harrogate Borough Council gym site or Brimhams gym site. There's a children's playground by the river in Pateley. It has been known for adventurous fresh water swimmers to swim in the tarn a short walk up the hill from the cottage.

Pateley has artists studios tucked away behind the church in the centre. There are other artists studios tucked away in the countryside. The Niddart trail happens during a week once a year in summer and can be rewarding.

The Nidderdale museum is fairly quirky but worth a visit to learn about local history.

As well as 2 supermarkets and a high-class grocer's/deli, there are 2 award-winning butchers, a fresh fish shop and several bakers. There's a beautiful antique shop, dress shops, an outdoor pursuits shop, a clock maker's, little galeries, second-hand shops and let's not forget the oldest sweete shoppe in the Worlde!

The cottage has a comprehensive folder with details and maps of sights to see, places to visit and restaurants for all tastes.

Hi, I'm a retiree and I love living in the country, playing music, walking, going out and travelling. I stay with Airbnb hosts when I go away, if I can. I became a host to offer this magic cottage next to our house as a holiday retreat for other people.
